Berlin: Submarine Deluxe Lands Mark Lombardi Documentary
Submarine Deluxe has acquired all North American rights to Mareike Wegener’s feature documentary Mark Lombardi: Death Defying Acts Of Art & Conspiracy — a comprehensive look at the American neo-conceptual artist. Lombardi (1951-2000) created graphic artwork portraying the opaque global network of financial and political elites and their alleged ties to international terrorism. His masterpiece “BCCI” was investigated by the FBI after 9/11 but by that time the artist was dead from an apparent suicide. The deal was negotiated by David Koh & Dan Braun of Submarine Deluxe along with Stanley Buchthal of Dakota Group Ltd. and Stefan Kloos of Rise & Shine World Sales on behalf of the producers and director. Submarine Deluxe plans a theatrical release later this year. The German production was directed and written by Wegener and produced by Titus Kreyenberg with cinematography by Sophie Maintigneux. It was edited by Mareike Wegener and Eli Cortias Hidalgo.
Movie Depicting 2008 Mumbai Terrorist Attacks To Open in India
Pakistan-based terrorists killed 164 people and wounded more than 300 in Mumbai, India’s largest city and financial capital, in November 2008. Bollywood filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma’s movie The Attacks of 26/11, which re-creates those four days of death and destruction, opens in India on March 1. Shot in Urdu, Hindi, English and Marathi as a co-production between Eros International and Alumbra Entertainment, the thriller stars Nana Patekar as Rakesh Maria, Joint Commissioner of Police, and Sanjeev Jaiswal as terrorist Ajmal Kasab. “I strongly believe as a filmmaker and as a human being that the attacks of 26/11… are not against any community in particular. I think it is an attack on human beings and committed by certain inhuman elements,” Varma told Channel News Asia.– Don Groves
Universal Pictures Intl. Ups Creative Ad Duo
The studio’s international unit has promoted Carlos Antonini and Ivan Wormley to SVP Creative Advertising. The pair will be based in London and report directly to UPI’s EVP Marketing Simon Hewlett. They will jointly manage the international creative team and will take a more active role in strategy for UPI films plus boost collaboration with the Universal Pictures domestic marketing teams. Antonini was with the Universal-Paramount joint venture United International Pictures from 1999 before joining UPI in 2007. He has overseen The Fast and the Furious franchise as well as films from Chris Meledandri’s Illumination Entertainment including Despicable Me, and Judd Apatow’s Bridesmaids. Wormley created campaigns for Inglourious Basterds, Kick-Ass, Ted and American Pie: Reunion. Prior to joining UPI in 2004, Wormley began his career as the marketing manager for Momentum Pictures then took a similar role at FilmFour Distributors in 1999.
