Oscar Host Seth MacFarlane Praises Golden Globe Counterparts Tina Fey & Amy Poehler

It is a big year for TV talent as TV writers/performers are hosting the top movie awards shows this year: the Oscars, Seth MacFarlane, and the Golden Globes, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. (Additionally, Kelsey Grammer is hosting the DGA Awards and Nathan Fillion the WGA Awards.) With their NBC show Smash nominated for best comedy/musical series, Neil Meron and Craig Zadan, producers of the upcoming Academy Awards, had a front-row seat at tonight’s Golden Globes ceremony, and Meron, who attended, watched the proceedings up close. MacFarlane didn’t attend but he too watched the Globes, tweeting occasional comments. He later joined the Golden Globes crowd at the HBO party, accompanying his girlfriend, Emilia Clarke, who co-stars on the network’s hit drama Game Of Thrones. MacFarlane was effusive in his praise for Fey and Poehler’s performance as hosts. “Please give Tina and Amy high marks because they did great,” MacFarlane said. Does the duo’s strong showing increase the pressure on him? MacFarlane seemed unfazed. “It doesn’t matter how I do, Oscar hosts always get thrashed,” he deadpanned.

As for Fey and Poehler, they don’t have a deal beyond tonight’s Golden Globes but I hear the show’s producers and NBC loved them and would like to have them back as hosts next year. (Both Fey and Poehler are in the NBC family — Fey is segueing into a production deal with Universal TV after the end of her NBC comedy 30 Rock, while Poehler’s NBC series Park And Recreation is expected to be renewed.) Fey and Poehler brought writers from New York, including Saturday Night Live head writer Seth Meyers, to work on the Globes. Also in Los Angeles to lend a hand was SNL honcho Lorne Michaels.

  1. Ricky who? Tina and Amy- perfect combination. They proved that you can have a laugh and not make people feel like they need a shower. They were spot on! Congrats ladies!

  2. Tina and Amy were fantastic. Their opening bit was cute, funny, and still had some bite. They are wicked smart women and damn hilarious. Killer combination. One sour note was Tina calling out Taylor Swift. I realize Taylor is bigger than the Beatles right now, but she’s still a kid.

    1. I disagree, elfrunner.

If you’re a 23-year-old “kid” who’s cashing checks in the million$ after writing break up songs about guys you’ve gone out with, you’re old enough to take a joke or two at your own expense.

If she was 16, I might agree with you. But she’s (Swift) been exposed to the industry for a while now. She’s no innocent rube.

  3. Yes, these ladies were a breath of fresh air. Very funny and clever without being vicious. Would definitely bring them back.

  4. I thought Tina Fey and Amy Pohler were perfect compliments last night at The Golden Globes. Almost as good as “two” Billy Crystal hosts would be! Entertaining and gracious.

  5. Tina and Amy…thank you for the “make you smile and feel good “kind of humor you brought to the show. Life is so full of nasty cruelty as it is…it was refreshing that you did not have to stoop to that level to get a laugh. Many sincere thanks.

  6. Great job by Amy & Tina, but they need to quit while they’re ahead. The claws will be out if they do it again next year. One and done ain’t such a bad thing.
