Time Warner Cable is adding Pac-12 Networks to its Southern California lineup starting today, which will include one channel for USC and UCLA and another for the Pac-12 conference. The LA Times noted that satcasters DirecTV and Dish and telco TV providers AT&T and Verizon FiOS have yet to add the networks. Sports Business Journal has reported that Pac-12 is seeking more than 80-cents per subscriber. That’s more than CNN, USA and FX and about the same as Disney Channel, according to industry consultant SNL Kagan. Los Angeles has a lot of sports channels, which translates to higher costs for customers. Those channels include Prime Ticket and Fox Sports West plus the two Pac-12 networks that launch tomorrow. In the fall TWC will add a pair of sports channels of its own, one English, one Spanish. TWC also has the Lakers, the Galaxy and hopes to grab the Dodgers away from Fox. All that comes to not quite $4 per subscriber and Time Warner Cable wants them distributed to all subscribers, not on a separate sports tier. And the Dodgers could decide to launch their own channel. That’s a lot of regional sports channels on top of Disney/ABC’s ESPNs at $4.69 per subscriber plus Comcast’s Versus rebranded NBC Sports Network which aims to compete with ESPN.
