The next generation Beverly Hills Cop — that is a hot hourlong pitch from Beverly Hills Cop star Eddie Murphy and The Shield creator Shawn Ryan, which is making the rounds right now. I’ve learned that the project is envisioned as a sequel to the hit movie franchise which chronicled the exploits of wise-cracking Detroit detective Axel Foley (Murphy) in Los Angeles. The proposed series has a similar fish-out-of-water setup and centers on Foley’s son who moves to Beverly Hills to escape the shadow of his legendary dad. Murphy is set to reprise his role as Axel in occasional recurring guest appearances. It is a premise Murphy had been trying to get off the ground for about a year.
ABC and Fox heard the pitch today, with NBC and CBS slated to take the meeting with Murphy and Ryan tomorrow. All four networks are expected to make a play for the project, described as a light procedural. Sony Pictures TV, where Ryan is under an overall deal, is producing. (The teaming of Murphy and Ryan was first reported by Vulture.) Sony TV’s involvement is somewhat surprising given the fact that the movie franchise was produced by Paramount Pictures, which, though not a direct corporate sibling to CBS TV Studios anymore, still has an affiliation with the the TV studio and the eye network via their Viacom lineage. As a character-driven procedural with comedic elements with a pre-sold title, Beverly Hills Cop hits CBS’ sweet spot much like its upcoming series Elementary. Also surprisingly, a Beverly Hills Cop offshoot comes with no involvement from Warner Bros. TV-based Jerry Bruckheimer who made his mark as a producer with the 1984 breakout. Meanwhile, the long-gestating Beverly Hills Cop 4 movie, which would’ve reunited all the original auspices, plus director Brett Ratner, never got off the ground. Ryan, co-creator/executive producer of the upcoming ABC drama Last Resort, will write the Beverly Hills Cop TV reboot and executive produce it with Murphy.

There was a while there…wasn’t Brett Ratner directing this?
Quoting the article: “Meanwhile, the long-gestating Beverly Hills Cop 4 movie, which would’ve reunited all the original auspices, plus director Brett Ratner, never got off the ground.”
YAAAAAAAAAY MR. MURPHY. THANK YOU. YES PLEASE. DO IT. MAKE US HAPPY.
Sounds like it’s in USA’s wheelhouse. As long as it doesn’t prevent Judge Reinhold from reprising his role as Judge Reinhold in Arrested Development’s fourth season ;)
I’m confused…if the son is trying to escape the shadow of his legendary father why move to Beverly Hills where his father became a legend??
Agoura Hills Cop? Chino Hills Cop? Citrus Heights Cop?
Don’t try to make sense out of a project just trying to fly on the coat tails of a once popular film. First BATES MOTEL prequel, and now this. Hollywood can come up with nothing original.
Go Shawn! Will watch anything Shawn Ryan makes.
Genius.
I’ll watch it if they get Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, and Ronny Cox back.
Dammit! I was about to trash this, but if everyone’s on board…
Could be awesome!
Very sad T. Scott can’t be involved. I love parts of BHC2 more than 1 (“get your mad ass in this pool!”).
Glenn – I second that! Although I do wish they would have made the 4th movie! DAMN! At least Ratner can’t ruin it now.
Oh yeah, cause the 3rd one was soooo good.
Can’t wait for the scene where Axel busts his son picking up a transvestite. “Hey, I know that dude.”
Casting will make or break this show.
Let’s hope they cast Donald Glover as his son
He’s the best, most obvious choice. They should hold off on casting Axel Jr until Communuity gets cancelled.
Bad move. Should have just went and done Beverly Hills 4 with all the old cast one last time. With Michael Bay (before you trolls start whining, remember he did “Bad Boys”), NOT Ratner.
It’s funny how Eddie said they could never crack a Beverly Hills 4 script yet they come up with this bad series idea.
Very cool. Very smart. Why this wasn’t done earlier? have no fucking idea. But then…who makes the smart decisions in Tinsel Town?
Don’t know anymore. It can’t be the smart, creative people like Ryan and Murphy. Sure as hell can’t agents or execs. Publicists?
So…the question then is…why didn’t BH COP 4 go with Ryan and Murph for the big screen first?
Donald Glover to play the son would be perfect. Go go Gambino man!
The two biggest cases against any sequel, reboot, or reimagining are “Beverly Hills Cop 2” and “Beverly Hills Cop 3”.
Beverly Hills Cop 2 was/is awesome.
Isn’t there a show on USA Network called Common Law, which is this exact same premise…..
That is not even remotely close to having the same premise.
Yeah, Common Law is way worse.
It’s official. I’d rather work in web television.
Boooooooooo.
did someone ask why..? for entertainment….duh. and im sure they sill make money. did you reakly have to ask why isa?
If Damon Wayans Jr. We’re not so perfect on Happy Endings…I’d watch him in this!
I still hope that they make BHC 4. Nevertheless, a tv show isn’t a bad idea.
On one hand, a seriously-flawed concept on many levels.
On the other hand, I’m rooting for Shawn, Eddie and Sony to totally fleece whatever network is stupid/desperate enough to pony up the cash money it will take to get this turkey off the ground.
C’mon… having Eddie Murphy show up every 13 episodes is not a BHC show.
Have things really gotten this bad, E?
There’s no bigger fan of the film series than I, but this smells of disaster. Shawn Ryan can’t do action-COMEDY (and why even do this series if it’s not going to have humor?) and Murphy is type-A drama/control freak. I’m curious to see what they develop and how the nets respond. But hairs on neck at full attention!
BRING BACK JUDGE!!!!!!! He’s just as important to this franchise as Eddie and was HILARIOUS on Arrested Development and Seinfield! Judge RULES!
