New York, NY – July 27, 2012 – The Wagner/Cuban Company’s Magnolia Pictures announced today that they have acquired US rights to A PLACE AT THE TABLE, a powerful documentary from Participant Media and co-directors Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush about the hunger crisis in America. Featuring Jeff Bridges and Tom Colicchio, with music by T Bone Burnett and The Civil Wars, the film debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival with the title “Finding North.” It was produced by Jacobson and Silverbush, along with Julie Goldman and Ryan Harrington. Jeff Skoll, Diane Weyermann, Christina Weiss Lurie, Jeffrey Lurie and Colicchio served as executive producers.
Magnolia and Participant previously collaborated on the very successful FOOD, INC, a film that affected real positive change by asking audiences to think about the quality and source of the food that they eat. A PLACE AT THE TABLE takes on the food issue from a new angle, shining a light on the 30% of American families—more than 49 million people—that don’t know where their next meal is coming from.
Jeff Bridges asks in the film: “Do you envision America as a country where one in four of the kids are hungry?” A PLACE AT THE TABLE asks tough questions about the hunger crisis, and provides answers of how we can affect real change, putting human faces on the issue with colorful and engaging portraits of real American families that are struggling to put food on the table.
“Beyond being powerful, moving, and a real call to action for change, A PLACE IN THE TABLE is an incredibly well made, cinematic and entertaining film,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. “It’s a great companion film to FOOD, INC, and we’re very happy to be working with our friends at Participant again.”
Participant Media CEO Jim Berk said, “We are thrilled to be joining once again with the great Magnolia team to bring A PLACE AT THE TABLE to U.S. audiences along with what will be a rich and muscular Social Action campaign to provide them with opportunities to create real impact.”
PublicAffairs, publisher of The New York Times Best-selling companion book to FOOD, INC, is readying a Participant Guide to A PLACE AT THE TABLE for delivery to bookstores this December.
A PLACE AT THE TABLE will be released theatrically in the first quarter of 2013. The deal was done by Magnolia SVP of Acquisitions Dori Begley with Josh Braun of Submarine.
