BREAKING… 4TH UPDATE: Local Aurora Police in Colorado just confirmed they have the shooting suspect in custody. Police now say 14 12 people were killed and more than 50 people have been wounded.
They all were injured after a mass shooting at a suburban Colorado movie theater at the Aurora Town Center where The Dark Knight Rises was showing just after midnight. Local TV stations KUSA and KMGH said a lone gunman attired in protective gear opened fire with guns and teargas in the packed Century 16 Movie Theater, and moviegoers at first thought it was part of the film’s action sequences. One moviegoer told the TV anchor he heard “10 to 20 shots”. Some moviegoers are telling local TV stations about horrific details and bloody scenes inside Theater 9. Police told TV stations the shooting was first reported at 12:39 AM after the 24-year-old male shooter “just appeared” from the front of the theater. Then police arrived and found the suspect in the rear of the theater near where he’d parked his car. He didn’t resist arrest and had a rifle and two other guns when he was taken into custody.

There are many conflicting reports when it comes to actual confirmed events that occurred. It is a very real possibility this terrifying tragedy may affect The Dark Knight Rises‘ opening box office today and this weekend. “Not what you expect to happen when you’re waiting in line to go to the blockbuster film of the summer,” one local TV anchor told viewers not long after the shooting.

Crazý people!
Something, is seriously wrong with our society, and it will take generations to fix it.
With, so much negativity around in general, it attracts hate in some people, that sometimes unthinkable things like these events occur.
It’s sincerely a sad day, when all these people only went out to watch and enjoy this movie that they have been waiting months for.
RIP to all who have died and a speedy recovery to the injured (Prayers go out to all families concerned).
You think they will cancel some showings now as a precaution?
i hope not i know its a great movie!!
maybe that local theater but not nationwide.
Why? Going by past shootings we would have had to shut down all high schools, all universities, McDonalds, coffee shops, post offices, factories. On the contrary, I am going to see it tonight. Everyone should go to the movies this weekend. Dark Knight not your thing? Great, fine. Go to the movies though. I have always loved going to a theater with a big crowd and I refuse to cower to another violent loser.
They already canceled the Paris one
Media here in Colorado is reporting 12 dead, 30-40 injuries as of now.
They just confirmed 10 fatalities now. WTF…..
Local ABC said they confirmed 10 dead & 20 injured. I turned to MSNBC & they just said as many as 20-30 injured, so this does appear to be a serious event.
Very sad evening for those who were lost. Why do these mass shooting sprees occur in Colorado?
Surely time to rethink ‘the right of the people to keep and bear arms’?
How many more incidents?
Sadly, they aren’t only in Colorado. A certain former senator from Arizona can attest to that. I will say they do seem to happen a lot more in the west.
I lived in Colorado for a while. Suffice it to say, there are more bat-sh*t crazy people out there per capita than any other state in the country. The crazies must be attracted to the mountains.
And in Fort Hood, Texas and Binghamton, New York and in Alabama and Virginia and Norway…
Not much to say other than this is seriously fucked up.
This is unbearably sad. RIP to the ten who didn’t make it while going to the theatre for entertainment. My thoughts are with the injured for a quick and successful recovery. Sad night.
God bless those fans. What a nightmare. There’s literally nowhere to run or hide in theater. It’s a nightmare for some innocent folks just trying to enjoy themselves. I can’t believe there may be dead children. Horrible.
Im sorry for the loss of those 10 ppl that made u all said, on the other hand thousands of kids are dying everyday in Syria Libya Egypt Sudan and sumal
Thoughts and prayers should be with the victims. As well as all the artists and other industry professionals who participated in the creation of this work of art. Nobody deserves to have their efforts marred by such tragedy. I hope we as a society react to this with fortitude and bravery. That we don’t let this Permanently undermine our love of going to the movies and experiencing events like this. And that we react with reason and common sense. One mad-man’s evil cannot be allowed to undermine our joy of nights like this should have been. It will take time to move past the sorrow and fear that will inevitably be linked to this event, but It is the hope that stories like this film intended to instill, in us as a people and society that makes me confident we can and will come out stronger.
Sadly crazy people often target places where people congregate. And in so many cases they don’t even know their victims or have a personal grudge with them. I hope people can get past it as well but I know they will be scared to take their children to this movie this weekend now. I feel safe enough going in Texas but I can’t blame others if they choose to stay home.
“As well as all the artists and other industry professionals who participated in the creation of this work of art. Nobody deserves to have their efforts marred by such tragedy. ”
Seriously?
What nutjob you are.
I appreciate that this is a film website but my god, can you really in all coldblooded honesty talk about how this is going to affect box office figures when 14 people have just been killed? Surely not what anybody should be worried about right now?
Sorry. We didn’t realize you were holier than the rest of us.
No, I’m apparently just far more humane.
No, he’s right. It’s uncouth to talk about how the death of a dozen people and the injury of many more would affect box office. People lost their lives. Families lost loved ones.
What does that even mean?
I read about shootings at black theaters every now and then. So I’m guessing by the fact that everyone cares now, this theater must have been in a white neighborhood.
“14 dead and 50 wounded and people give a shit? Hmph, must be all white people. Mmhmm.”
This is an unprecedented massacre. Your pathetic racial angle makes no sense. You will rot in the same Hell as the shooter, wondering why everyone hates you. It’s not because you are black — it’s because you’re an asshole.
I don’t disagree with what you’re implying but it’s the scope of this story (12 dead, 50+ injured) that makes it a bigger deal than other shootings. Seemingly random, mass shootings scare the shit out of Americans.
Jamal, you are a tedious drum-banger. What a fucking stupid thing to say. If you’d like to post any links to stories about mass-shootings in black-populated theatres (which appear to have passed us all by…) I’m sure we’d all be keen to read about them. No? Then go and spread your woe-is-me tripe elsewhere.
Perhaps you need to vent to the Main Stream Media who arent covering the shootings you are talking about.
Don’t be stupid Jamal – if you’d like to point us towards all these supposed mass shootings in black-dominated theatres that the ‘racist’ media has been studiously ignoring, we’d love to read about them. But you can’t. So take your woe is me, downtrodden sense of entitlement somewhere where it’s wanted.
it’s not a white theater or a black theater. very cynical of you.
geronimonkey, I was thinking the exact same thing. I cringed a bit when I read that.
yes this is a movie site duh….
My reaction exactly. Leading with, people shot to death at screening may affect total box office. What a world.
I disagree, there’s nothing wrong with people feeling horrible about this tragic event but also wondering how it’s going to affect the movie. Many people are just looking at the tragedy as a whole affecting victims, and affecting the industry too. Something like this will have and IS ALREADY HAVING a profound change on the cinemas WORLD WIDE. Example: Paris, and the other country that pulled marketing for the movie as a whole. This is horrible, we all feel sickened, and a magnanimous amount of people hope that this won’t forever chain the movie with the shootings. The movie had NOTHING to do with the shootings.
agree completely. now is a time to focus on the victims and nothing else.
Excuse me, you must be confusing this site with USA TODAY. This *is* an industry trade news site for industry people. We are all in a state of shock over this horrific act. But how it affects our business is pertinent for many of us in here–very pertinent, in fact.
Prayers for the families. This nut obviously took advantage of the large crowds. Death penalty for the perpetrator, after a trial of course. Pure evil. I don’t care about his motivations or mental state. I’m judging his actions and for those he deserves to die. No free food clothing and medical care for the rest of his life.
George Carlin saw this coming… “And besides, if we made airplanes completely safe, the terrorists would simply start bombing other places that are crowded. Porn shops, crack houses, titty bars, and gangbangs. You know, entertainment venues.”
idiotic argument. Just like all the hollywood libs who are anti-gun yet put out movies like this every year.
I just got back from a theater where all 24 screens were sold out for the movie. Shocked to see what happened to these people, who were doing exactly what I was doing tonight, and no doubt excited about tonight all day and many days or even weeks before.
My apologies is my post wasnt properly clear. I was not meaning to refer to box office. But I can’t help but feel for Mr Nolan and all the other players in this film. The details emerging are eerily similar to themes and events in previous Batmas films, which will inevitably lead to the media making connections between motive and film. I hope that those who made this film do not take guilt upon themselves thinking they influenced this mad-man’s actions. They wanted to bring movie-goers joy and now their efforts have been marred. They are victims themselves. And we should keep everyone in our thoughts. That is what I meant.
What Chris H said. My thoughts & prayers go out to everyone involved, especially the victims & their loved ones. a sad day.
To mention movie sales being negatively affected in the same sentence as such tragedy is an act of complete disrespect.
No it’s not, pal. This is a trade website.
Agreed. But I don’t expect anything less from hollywood…
Unreal. Thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the victims. And honestly, who gives a fuck about the box office take being affected by this? It won’t, but to even mention it in the article is downright pathetic.
Let’s get a grip. It’s sad. But that’s enough weeping. That many people are dying violently in Syria every minute. In this instance, I’m more interested in whether TDKR is gonna kick Avengers’ ass.
WB just shit a brick. This is definitely going to scare people off from seeing the film. Bye-bye box office records.
If anything this tragedy just made WB MORE money. There is nothing America loves more than sensationalism and tragedy. Not that any of that matters when 14 people are dead and 50 hurt, some including babies and children.
Way to get straight to the heart of the matter, idiot.
Actually, this is a trade mag, so it’s an absolutely valid point to raise here. Go and turn on Fox news for the heart-rending humanity stuff. And for what it’s worth, I don’t see it affecting the box office one single iota.
WB is not screwed. the film is on the front page of every newspaper in the world. and the lead story on every international TV news program. and while people in the psycho-killers hometown are rightfully spooked. the police did their job and nabbed the person. so he won’t be on the loose.
this was a random _and_very_sad act of violence. our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones.
but this random act of violence is neither the fault of the filmmakers or the film studios. it is a tragedy. but it is 100% the fault of the crazy guy who shot all those people.
and i neither work for WB or CN. although i wish i did.
violence breeds violence – and capital punishment is little more than premeditated murder. thank god only a handful nations on the planet condone it: iran, irak, north korea, china, usa and the like.
the shooting in denver is a tragedy – not a soapbox for pro death penalty agitation. most of us who log onto deadline hollywood are professionals in an industry that offers one of the greatest collective experiences in the world – moviegoing. the essence of whst we do was attacked tonight – my prayers go out to the victims and their families.
violence breeds violence
Agreed, including the violence in video games and movies.
The US Tyranical Govt. will use this massacre for a repeal of the 2nd Amendment. What we need is more citizens carrying.
very true on the 2nd amendment repeal we all need to rally up and get our carry on.. and not let tyranny win..u cant blame all gun owners for a few fucking nuts running around with guns.anyone who says otherwise is a blind deaf and dumb brainwashed fake american..
Wow, you are a really cool person. You just twisted an extreme tragedy to fit your own political ends and it only took a few hours for you to begin utilizing innocent people’s deaths and injuries to do it. Bravo.
There’s NEVER been an incident of a “brave civilian gunman” taking out a guy on a shooting rampage.
There ARE many incidents, however, of brave UNARMED citizens doing so.
Apparently, the MORE you feel the need to carry a gun all the time, the LESS you feel willing to risk your life to save others.
yes, Tim, that is surely what is needed ~ more unbalanced people carrying more guns.
Why not escalate an already bad situation and make it a total en masse shoot out in a
smoke filled theatre ?
Good God, man.
My prayers and thoughts go the victims and their families. A heartbreakingly violent and sad
event.
I for one agree with Ted. I know it hard to realize that only law abiding citizens abide by the law. The bad guy operates OUTSIDE the law and therefore got his weapon illegally in the first place. All gun control does is disarm the good guy. So until you can take the guns out of EVERYones hands, including the police and military, don’t take it out of the citizens hands.
Violence on our televisions. Violence in our movies. Violence in our video games. Violence 24/7 in our lives. Guns being sold left and right. What do people expect? Isn’t this common sense anymore? Our realities are saturated with guns and violence.
Entertainment is a billion dollar business.
Video games are a billion dollar business.
Guns are a billion dollar business.
People are just brainwashed at this point.
unfortunately violence is propogated by the entertainment industry in all its forms and further, violence without any kind of moral to it…therefore: people who are brainwashed or unable to differentiate between what they have grown up on and what is real – will act most probably in this way: violent.
until our society pays to watch things other than violence for the sake of violence – then I fear this will grow more and more the norm as kids brought up with this will be and remain brainwashed.
All so some groups can make some money. Pathetic state of affairs in the world right now.
I was just about to post the same sentiment.
Why have we humans made violence ENTERTAINMENT?
We’ve been doing it since the beginning of time… but I still don’t understand it.
What now? The TSA in theaters? full body scans and molestation
in malls, theaters and sports events. Wether this was a Goverment operative or not. The Govt will use it for an excuse to take away good people’s rights.
This just breaks my heart. We make and enjoy movies to escape the harsh reality of life. My thoughts are with those in Colorado and movie fans everywhere.
This is not right. I hope he burns in hell. The motive. There is no logic. It’s insane and inhumane. It makes me sick to my stomach.
Tragic. I wish these mentally unstable pieces of shit would just off themselves instead of feeling the need to ruin other people’s lives. Thank God the police were there or this could have been a lot worse. I pray for the families and for a swift path to a lethal injection for this POS.
