EXCLUSIVE: Johnny Depp will star in The Grand Budapest Hotel, the next film that Wes Anderson wrote and will direct.
Anderson is going right back into business with his collaborators on Moonrise Kingdom, which is heading toward a $40 million gross to be among this summer’s art house hits.
The Grand Budapest Hotel will be produced by Anderson along with Scott Rudin and Indian Paintbrush’s Steven Rales. UTA reps Depp and Anderson.
This comes as Depp continues to work on The Lone Ranger for Disney. He stars in that Gore Verbinski-directed film with Armie Hammer, and response was strong to scenes unveiled during Disney’s panel at Comic-Con over the weekend. Depp will likely make this next; plans for him to star in The Thin Man for Rob Marshall have been pushed for the time being.

Rales is doing some good things! Way to go.
Two out of UTA’s five interesting clients.
sad, but true
Maybe so, but give Depp credit for not jumping to a bigger ship.
(He certainly hasn’t needed one but props, nontheless.)
It feels like Wes has the need to see everything remade in his “image”. Even if it’s Bill Murray again.
This is an inspired pairing.
Agreed! I’m actually looking forward to this collaboration. Even the title of the film is intriguing.
Anything that gets between Depp and Tim Burton is a good thing. Time for a long break, boys.
This is great news! Anderson’s latest, MOONRISE KINGDOM, is one of the best films of the year. Depp is incredible when directed by filmmakers that are precise. Excited about this.
Just be sure to hide the makeup box and all pictures of Kieth Richards from Depp.
That Depp dude is so full of himself, I am surprised his head doesnt explode.

Yup. Another Wes Anderson movie where all the actors are having a great time thinking they are hilarious, but the paying audience is left confused, bored, and feeling gypped.
And you say that why? Just making it up?
Seems like a humble and accomplished guy to me. Dying to know why you decided otherwise.
You’re kidding right?!!!!!!!
Not sure about Depp in a WA film. Depp’s “comedy” has always been extremely self conscious and that seems to be the opposite of what works about WA’s comedy.
Also, I am a hard core WA fan but don’t see what all the fuss is over Moonrise Kingdom.
I love Moonrise Kingdom so I’ll be looking forward to this.
Has Angela Lansbury agreed to join the film as well? That would the best news ever.
Moonrise kingdom was over the line pervy. I hesitate to point this out as not to attract pedophiles to go and see it. I had to walk out, but surprisingly, no one else has mentioned the fact that 12 year old children are in their underwear kissing and groping each other. Shame on you, Wes Anderson. I used to be a huge fan.
What a weird, sad comment. You mean two kids entering puberty who clearly love each other would never “grope and kiss” in their underwear, especially under atypical Wes Anderson-styled life-and-death circumstances? I thought it was utterly sweet and in its own way, very chaste. Maybe what seems “pervy” is more a representation of your mindset than what’s on screen. Perhaps a viewing of “The Blue Lagoon” had an adverse affect on your subconscious as a child?
Interesting to hear that they’re with the same agency, because that tidbit adds a level of cold calculation to this casting.
Depp’s in danger of pricing himself right out of existence in the aftermath of the mega-flop Dark Shadows, the ongoing budget problems with The Lone Ranger, and the “pushing” of The Thin Man, because they couldn’t do it for less than $100 million, so pairing him with a director known for films done on budgets that normally wouldn’t cover Depp’s up front fee could help change Depp’s pricey image within Hollywood.
Moonrise Kingdom was boring.
Me not know what you mean. Director suppose to make movie in own image, that director job. Directing is like cookies, comes in many flavors and made by different bakers. Bill Murray is like chocolate chips in chocolate chip cookie.
Good. He needs a long break from Tim Burton.
Do actors get any points for being a “muse”? Let’s all take a break from Tim Burton. So, Burton has figured out Depp needs to bwe child-like and coddled like a ballerina and indulged. How else can you explain the films they have made together.
Also, if an actor is playing a mythical creature, can he be slammed for bad acting? Would critics say, “Russell Crowe played a better drunk bunny”?
Thin Man remake pushed hard off a cliff, I hope.
What exactly is it that makes Depp a star? In truth he’s a plagiarist isn’t he? Is it possible that if you lift bits from other people’s personae and characterizations – Keith Richards (“Pirates;”) Sean Hayes/Jack from “Will and Grace;” a little Pee Wee Herman in “Rum Diary”…that with re-runs coursing around the globe people unconsciously react positively to warmed over (polite for stolen) sense memory association resulting in international box office? I’ll bet he’s a nice guy but when he plays a regular character he is dull, dull, dull. Sorry. Never got him. In a Wes Anderson picture he’ll be good a.) because of Anderson; and b.)a great ensemble will make up the difference for his fundamental deficiencies. Or is it just laziness? Either way maybe this movie should be sub-titled “T.J.’s U.T.A. Packaging Crisis.”
“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” is Sean Hayes/Jack.
everything that Johnny Depp does is so great, there is noone better…
Couldn’t have said it better myself!!!!
I haven’t watched a film yet where Johnny’s acting has let me down. Now, some of the screenwriters R another story, but if Wes Anderson chose Johnny for a leading man–then Anderson chose the BEST! Will be looking forward to adding this movie into my collection.~Desiree Ann~
