Rob Lowe is in talks to play Liberace’s plastic surgeon in Behind The Candelabra, the Steven Soderbergh-directed film for HBO that stars Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as his young limo driver and live-in lover Scott Thorson in a chronicle of their tempestuous hush-hush relationship. Dan Aykroyd and Debbie Reynolds are also starring and Jerry Weintraub is exec producer, with script by Richard LaGravanese.

Nicky Katt is also in talks to join the film, playing Mr. Y, a mysterious figure in the life of Liberace and Thorson. Katt starred in Soderbergh’s Full Frontal and The Limey, as well as Boiler Room and Sin City.

The project originated as an indie feature, but seems a strong fit for HBO, where everybody will see it. Gregory Jacobs and Susan Ekins are producing.

Lowe most recently completed the indie political film Knife Fight, and is currently shooting a Lifetime film about the prosecution of Casey Anthony. He’s also made a Simon & Schuster to write a sequel to his memoir Stories I Only Tell My Friends.

This is great. Soderbergh is so sharp at casting. Really looking forward to seeing Douglas stretch.

Terrible title. Why didn't they just keep Liberace?
