Shine USA continues to staff up its upper executive ranks. The company has tapped Australia unscripted TV producer and Shine Australia executive Paul Franklin for the newly created position of EVP Programming, Shine USA. Relocating to Los Angeles, Franklin will take creative oversight of Shine USA’s unscripted slate that include The Biggest Loser, MasterChef and Tabatha Takes Over. He will report to company president Eden Gaha. Franklin’s hire follows last July’s appointment of Shine Australia and New Zealand co-CEO Carl Fennessy as Shine USA CEO. Fennessy and Franklin worked together at Shine Australia.
Franklin began his TV career in the UK before relocating to Sydney to oversee the first Australian season of The Biggest Loser and Jamie’s Kitchen Australia. He later served as head of factual entertainment for FremantleMedia Australia, where he launched the first international MasterChef offshoot, MasterChef Australia, which became the country’s highest-rated series. After departing FremantleMedia Australia, Franklin consulted with Shine Group and helped launch other versions of MasterChef, including the one in the U.S. with Gordon Ramsay. Franklin most recently oversaw unscripted series for Shine Australia including The Biggest Loser, MasterChef and Junior MasterChef. His appointment comes on the same day another Shine executive closely associated with the MasterChef franchise got a promotion — Paula Warwick was named Head of International Productions for Shine Network.
