Whitney Houston Tragic Grammys Draw 39 Million Viewers, Second Most Watched Ever
CBS delivered a one-two ratings punch yesterday. Leading into the monster Grammys in primetime, which drew the music awards show’s second largest audience ever, was the final round of the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am golf tournament, which scored its highest ratings in 15 years. The finishing round, which posted a 5.1/10 overnight rating, up 96% from last year, had everything going for it — an intriguing pairing of longtime rivals and fan favorites Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, plenty of drama with Mickelson’s come-from-behind win and Woods’ destruction as well as celebrity supporting cast of amateurs that included actor Ray Romano. The only blemish on what was a perfect afternoon of sports coverage was CBS’ decision to cut away to the end of the Michigan-Illinois basketball, denying golf fans a key stretch of of the Mickelson-Woods duel.
