EXCLUSIVE: Industry vets Mark Lindsay, Marina Grasic and Jan Korbelin have launched Cargo Entertainment, a company that will be affiliated with Curious Pictures and will finance, produce and run foreign sales for independent films. The company is launching at AFM with a first project. In The Blood, an action revenge thriller that will be directed by John Stockwell, will begin production in Puerto Rico in the spring. The film is scripted by Dumb and Dumber’s Bennett Yellin and James Robert Johnston.

Stockwell called the film “an opportunity to take on a taut, tense paranoid thriller that delivers on a supremely engaging premise, what if the person you love vanished in a foreign land and you were the prime suspect in their disappearance?” The film is produced by Verso Entertainment’s Baron Davis and Cash Warren, along with Movie Package Company’s Shaun Redick and Ray Mansfield.

Cargo’s international sales and distribution will be headed by Lindsay, who has been an exec at Miramax, Lorimar, Spelling Films and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment. Grasic and Korbelin will run production and financing while they continue running Curious Pictures, a production and visual effects company. She has had producing roles on indies from Crash to Alpha Dog and was co-founder of Sidney Kimmel Entertainment. Korbelin is the former president of ProSieben Television who was also an exec producer on Crash and Alpha Dog.

“We’ve seen a big contraction in the market but the business is coming back,” Korbelin told Deadline. “A lot of players exited, but buyers are re-emerging and want interesting films. There haven’t been many new sales agent companies forming in the last two years,. We believe there’s a place for a one-stop shop that can produce, finance and sell movies.” They said they will have their funding finalized by Berlin, and will have a slate of four to six films ready for Cannes. They intend to make six to eight films per year.” Luillo Ruiz, Gary King and Nate Ross will be executive producers.
