I wonder if this guy can do anything outside of impressions. If he hopes to have a post-SNL career he’s going to have to do some sketches where he’s playing a non-celebrity character.
Who is this guy? What is he proving, that he can do an impersonation of Chris Rock? Dude, don’t you think an Indian comedian can go on stage and do the Indian accent and make people laugh? There’s a reason an Aziz Ansari doesn’t do it — because you don’t get respect from anyone just doing a voice. You’re on SNL — you have a chance to do some great things, so you’re going to do a voice? That everyone you know has probably been hearing you do since you were 10? Show some talent, because all this proves is that you don’t have any.
So based on your reasoning, Jay isn’t talented because he’s a black guy doing a black “accent”? Right…
Chris just finished a run on Broadway with Bobby Cannavale and Annabella Sciorra, in The Motherf**ker with the Hat. Bobby Cannavale was nominated for a Tony Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play. This was a serious role no impressions. Chris held his own.
I would remind the poster above that Chris Rock himself didn’t do much when he was at SNL. He didn’t achieve larger success until after he left SNL for HBO. Lorne Michaels has a distinct talent for doing nothing with the black talent on SNL. Thank God Eddie Murphy was there during Lorne’s hiatus. Give Jay Pharoah a chance, after all he’s only a featured player. If the writers don’t write anything for him then what can he do except what he does best: impressions. At least it’s given him some level of recognition on the show.
I blame Lorne on under utilizing Jay. We know he’s great at impressions…not sure why they aren’t giving him skits. He can’t be that bad. Can he?
I absolutely agree @Melissamccarthyrules — they’re underusing a lot of the talent on there. I’d def like to see them be able to step outside of the “filler” roles that they’re given, especially Pharoah. I think he has a lot of promise.
I thought that was pretty hilarious. Jay Pharoah does impressions of Will Smith, Denzel, and now Chris Rock spot on. I definitely would like to see his role and time on SNL expanded. The guy definitely has talent and a bright future.
