EXCLUSIVE: It’s a project that will have everybody in Hollywood and beyond talking. I’ve learned that Warner Bros has set up an untitled drama that teams Gibson and screenwriter Joe Eszterhas on the telling of the heroic story of Jewish warrior Judah Maccabee. Eszterhas will write the script, and I understand that Gibson will collaborate with him.
Maccabee teamed with his father and four brothers to lead the Jewish revolt against the Greek-Syrian armies that had conquered Judea in the second century B.C. Gibson has the first option to direct but will definitely produce the film through his Icon Productions banner. It’s understandable why Warner Bros would want to be back in business with Gibson, who was once a high-profile fixture there and who made a fortune for that studio with the Lethal Weapon series and other films.
Having put some painful personal issues behind him, Gibson is determined to get back to making movies. He has long wanted to make this film about heroic Jews,
and it was discussed even when he was under fire after his drunken anti-Semitic rant during a 2006 Malibu arrest. Maccabee’s triumph and struggle against tyranny and oppression where people gave their lives so that others would be free to worship is celebrated by Jews all over the world through Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights. This subject matter is a decided departure for the filmmaker famous for directing The Passion of the Christ. But in a way the subject matter is in his wheelhouse: Maccabee is a close cousin to William Wallace, leader of the Scottish rebellion against the English in Braveheart, the film that brought Gibson two Oscars: for Best Picture and Best Director. Gibson last directed Apocalypto about the Mayan civilization and a tribesman who escapes human sacrifice and saves his family. While Gibson has experienced tremendous success as a producer and director, his recent star turn in front of the camera in The Beaver was a box office failure even though it received a rousing ovation at this past Cannes Film Festival.
This new deal also marks a major return to filmmaking for Joe Eszterhas, once Hollywood’s highest paid screenwriter for pics like Basic Instinct, Jagged Edge, and Flashdance. His credits also include two films that focused on Jewish themes: the 1987 Betrayed, which starred Debra Winger as an undercover FBI agent probing white supremacists, and 1989’s Music Box, which starred Jessica Lange whose Hungarian immigrant father is accused of engaging in atrocities during World War II. Both films were directed by Costa-Gavras and produced by Irwin Winkler. Music Box resulted in Eszterhas being condemned by the Hungarian Parliament for “betraying his heritage” by revealing the massacre of Jewish Hungarians by other Hungarians at the end of World War II. However, in 1995, Eszterhas was awarded the Emanuel Foundation’s Lifetime Achievement Award for his writings about the Holocaust in Hungary.
Recent Comments
In recent years, Eszterhas stepped away from Hollywood, moved to Cleveland, overcame cancer, and focused on writing books instead of films. Both he and Gibson have had their share of travails, and make an unexpected and intriguing pairing on an unexpected and intriguing subject.

Operation Ari get Gibson back
Brilliant. Gibson gets to simultaneously make a movie proving he doesn’t hate Jews AND make a movie reinforcing his view that the Jews cause all the wars of the world. He is a genius. When it comes to hating Jews.
LMAO… I plan on skipping this one as well as the next one. He and Obama should go on a vacation and never come back.
So ignorance would be your mantra.?
I doubt skipping out on a Hollywood movie has any relationship to ignorance. The last place knowledge and wisdom is found is amongst those in tinsletown.
I wonder about the budget. Will it be some 10-20 millions and then that movie will only be shown at some festivals and never hit the big screen. Or will it be some 60-80 millions budget and then it means they would have to sell it hard for big audience and Gibson would have to promote it everywhere and then we would enjoy when it will bomb?
We get it, the drudge readers who have taken a fancy to this site love to hate President Obama. But you don’t have to work him into every story on here.
well said
I agree. I hate Obama as much as anyone, but I’m so tired of hearing his name tied to everything. The same thing was done to GWB, though, but that doesn’t make it right.
Anyways, Charlie Sheen should take a lesson from Mel Gibson. Mel is the king of going insane while remaining rich, famous and relevant.
I’m a daily drudge reader and I don’t hate Obama. In fact I’ve been fervently supporting him for the sole fact that he is President and deserves some respect till he is not. I did not vote for him and will not this time. Not all Drudge readers are ignorant like the man above.
Drew, the fact that you’re a daily drudge reader makes you willfully ignorant. Unless you’re reading for laughs.
I guess they would be an odd couple: a schismatic Catholic, who claims to be more Catholic than the Pope himself (yet doesn’t live up to it), and a Communist relativist, who actually does what he can to create an even better atmosphere for big business. I don’t think they’d enjoy their vacation together. Unless you’re suggesting that they take separate vacations. On the other hand, since they are such contradictions, maybe they would enjoy a nice long chat.
Hollywood employs thousands of technicians, advertising staff, actors, distributors, etc. In an era in which California suffers some of the highest unemployment statistics, your ignorant rant re: “Big Business” is childish and puerile.
For such a tolerant society, some of us seem to be intolerant towards human foibles. Of course the fact that he is conservative is all the more reason to condemn him, right?
By the way, he is a Traditional Roman Catholic who attends an independent Latin Mass Chapel. This is NOT schismatic. You are mistaken. It’s a common error, but this is not correct.
I can’t wait to see the result of this collaboration. The fact that Gibson sins in a big and messy way, repents, struggles and gets back on the straight path is very admirable. So many do not.
Gibson would bring more passion to any chat with the POTUS,Joseph, and the POTUS just may learn something. I agree with you, Kathleen–well said. I cannot wait to see what Gibson has in store for us! His Masterpiece “The Passion” has by far been his best behind the scenes work. I am sure he will do the story of the Heroic Jewish icon well.
What does Obama have to do with this article?
Respectfully, Mikey, you can’t just wrap Mel and The President up in the same bag as though your grievances with both men are similar simply because you don’t like them. You may have perfectly valid reasons for disliking Obama but I’m sure it has nothing do with a drunken, anti-Semitic rant he engaged in with a police officer who just happened to be Jewish (Talk about bad timing!). No doubt you conversely don’t blame Mel Gibson for the stagnation in the economy or the situations in Iraq or Afghanistan either (Unless you believe terrorists use Lethal Weapons movies to teach them how to use phoney smoke grenades, dislocate their own shoulders and do a great “Curly”.) I think when conservatives (generally speaking) compare Obama to Hitler or Liberals (generally speaking) compared G.W.B. to Hitler it cheapens their arguments. Let the men be judged on their own merits. It’s not necessary to try to align them with despots and mass-murderers just to make a point. Just a word of advise.
Your bland and blind accusation is something very easy to do, very much so compared to writing about (or searching for) some sort of higher truth, which is what so-called Hollywood movies are generally supposed to be about. On your blind ignorance I do not have to speak, since you do very well at describing yourself.
As the article says, Maccabee and William Wallace are, indeed, very similar characters, but you stand with their oppressors in every way by your overt hatred of Mel Gibson. Indeed, you’d make a great communist, National Socialist, Fascist or even Moslem totalitarian as you spew your leftist, statist and freedom-hating commentary.
If you’re an American, you should be deeply ashamed of yourself. If you’re part of the Euro-American left, you are an Anti-Semite automatically, as the modern left has adopted Europe’s & Russia’s traditional and historic Anti-Semitismm, further making your statements hypocritical to a critical max.
That’s supposed to be satirical, right? Please tell me you’re not serious.
Huh?
I dont hate jews or Mel Gibson, but after your sweeping allogations and unqualified presumptions I might hate you.
Did u see that giant allogation they captured in…wherever it was.
Re: Joe Ester…thought he retired to a flyover state.
How heartwarming to see that angry crazy people are there for each other!
VERY VERY well said!! Gibson is far from a perfect man,yet has a gift for producing what are at times great films. The story of the Maccabees should be told and if it offers Gibson a chance at some personal redemption, who are these idiots to villify him? I plan on seeing it a dozen times!! Just to spite the Libs on this forum. I believe there is such hatred for Gibson that some of his critics are blinded to any possibility of a good film, the same group likely willing to forgive Roman Polanski.
Tell Theresa I said hi.
Excellent, and the same to Dr Mark’s comment. It’s quite evident by the responses to this article that the leftist fringe and the media are perpetuating Gibson’s hatred of Jews, not Gibson. All one need do is read the anti-Gibson rants in this thread and the first word in the title to this article – SHOCKER!
Wrong-this will show that Jews love their tradition, and stand up for themselves, as all people who have a great tradition should do. You know YOU sound like the anti-Semite.
Gibson is a genius film director and you are morons.
I agree – I like Gibson and love the movies he has made in recent years (Braveheart, Passion, Patriot, to name the biggies). Just watched The Beaver a few days ago, and it was very good – so painful and not at all what I expected. Gibson was tortured (as usual), but he does it so well.
Gibson’s “history” films are wildly inaccurate and poorly written xenophobic trash, featuring cardboard villains instead of anything resembling human beings. As a Jew I dread the hash he’ll make of our history.
Also, his Latin sucks.
They are movies meant to entertain….
Amen brother…LOL about the jewish guy complaining Mel will “hash” Jewish history when there are plenty of JEWS to do it. Mel Gibson may be the Jews only friend at this point, if they can wince through a likely tip of the hat to Jesus somewhere in the film.
Makkabee – “As a Jew I dread the hash he’ll make of our history.”
Well, since you’re only a secular Jew, your opinion really doesn’t matter. Even though Gibson is a schismatic Catholic and material heretic, he does retain much Catholic reverence (and reverence to history) in the movies he’s directed. The Maccabees are revered by Catholics as well as practicing Orthodox Jews. There is no doubt that Gibson’s portrayal of the Maccabee rebellion will be one favorable to the Jews. If he has any shred of Catholicism left in his body, it has to be.
Apparently, Makkabee, you’ve only seen Braveheart and are calling that his “films.” Braveheart is not historically accurate from a narrative standpoint (Isabelle and Edward II were children when Wallace died, Isabelle’s lover was an English adventurer, not Wallace, the Scots didn’t have tartans yet in 1300, etc.), but was still a visually stimulating and well-timed action adventure. His one Latin phrase, “Numquam mendacio sed homo indominus sum” is accurate; hardly sucks. Conversely, Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto are cinematic genius, amazing films in all facets. Passion should have won every eligible Oscar, but couldn’t for the obvious Jewish bias and hatred of the film. Further, fo what it’s worth, although Gibson’s not in the film, the Latin (spoken by some of the Romans and in one exchange between Pontius Pilate and Jesus) is also accurate, even if he should have thrown Greek in instead to make the film perfectly linguistically accurate. As some of the comments here attest, it’s difficcult to know which is worse, Gibson’s conspiracy theory tinged anti-Semitism or the venomous, anti-Christian bigotry Gibson and his work receives in response. The former can be excused (or at least understood) for being a bit of a crackpot. The latter cannot.
@Bill Foreman … I 100% agree! Very well put.
That’s funny you mention that. Mel Gibson had a great quote about the Disney animated film “Pocahontas.” People were complaining about the inaccuracies, and he commented, “How accurate can they expect it to be? There’s a talking racoon!”
Isn’t this like a spit on Jews? I wonder if it will turn out in the end of the movie that it was all Jews fault :) Now Gibson need to direct sequel to Brokeback Mountain and movie about women abusers and domestic violence. And then promote it with straight face like he never done and say any of those things.
I could never watch any of his movies now. Even when they show old Lethal Weapon movies I look at him and know that this is that monster from those tapes behind that pretty face. But I would actually like to watch him in some interview where he would behave like nothing happened. That would be hilarious.
And I like how there were all those people at TMZ site who screamed 10 times a day that they are his die hard fans, who sad they will support him like crazy… and then none of those so called fans showed up in the theaters for Beaver movie. And it bombed. Who need enemies when you have such fans who will sit weeks on the Internet defending you and then none of them show up to support their idol :)
I was looking forward to seeing The Beaver for about a year (I live in England). The nearest screen was 40 miles away and the only one this side of London, and only small cinemas at that. I understand from reading on the internet that the USA situation was similar, small art houses tucked away from the mainstream. Not true that people didn’t want to pay to see it, we weren’t given the oportunity before it was pulled. I’m ordering a DVD copy as soon as it’s out in October. I think Mel Gibson’s one of the greatest talents in the history of cinema and that’s all I really care about. He’s a magnificent film maker and it’s inevitable that his private life will get caught out sometimes because he’s so famous. Doesn’t that happen to most famous people eventually? It’s surely all part of the game. How talented are YOU ?????
Perhaps people go to movies based on their interest in the movies and not the politics or drama surrounding actors in the movies, such as the drama surrounding Tom Cruise.
Old Testament Abraham kicked his slave wife and son Ishmael {Arab Name} out to screw latter out of his birthright. Joshua murdered Men Women and Children. etc etc. Then we get to Bolshevick revolution in Russia, Jacob Schiff gave Trotsky $20 Mill. Result 20Mill Orthodox Christians murdered. Zionists declared war against Germany in 1933. There are no innocents.
“Zionists declared war against German in 1933”??? Are you fucking kidding me? you, sir, are clearly a moron.
it’s true
“Zionists declared war against Germany in 1933. There are no innocents.” When did this happen, Please cite your source of information. I don’t think that that ever happened.
Yes, brilliant – and you? You simultaneously complain about anti semitism while being anti-semetic!
BRILLIANT! Jews cause all the wars in the world…did you stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night?
Gee, I wonder when they’ll make a film about how those dirty Hungarians sacrificed themselves to save a young George Soros from the nazi death-camps. I mean, with movies like Music Box being so completely accurate and all…or maybe its just a lack of integrity in the jewish camp. Its hard to put all this in perspective without sounding racist, but I guess one could say that the jewish people have the integrity of survival, and for them, that is all the integrity they need. Not a problem, but people need to be aware of this when dealing with the George Soros’s of the world.
But he also speaks the truth!
He is a genius for sure, a brilliant actor and a very talented director. I’m not a Jew but I love the Jews. They are Gods chosed people. I don’t understand how a large part of the American Jewish population can betray their own people by being liberals and Obama supporters though. That makes no sense. Obama supports people that want to destroy the Jews, so it’s hypocrital to condemn Gibson, who has apologized for his drunken comments over and over again, and most American Jews support knowingly or unkowningly (thru ignorance)vote to undermine Isreal. Just pure stupidity. Anyway, I believe in forgiveness and you need to lay off the man and learn how to forgive and see the goodness in people and know that people make terrible mistakes.
You have no idea what you’re talking about, bub. And that fact that you are compelled to drag Obama into this discussion proves that you are just another right-wing, religious nut who only “loves” Jews because they play an essential role in your idiotic Rapture fantasies. Please, just STFU. Jews don’t need love or help from self-righteous, disingenuous creeps like you.
Mr. Obvious, Whether or not James Jordan is a right-wing, religious nut, there is still much truth in what he said. Gibson has apologized ad nauseum for what he did. And, even after Obama said that Israel should return to its pre-1967 borders, the ADL still fawned over him for showing such “concern” for Israel.
Todd, your ignorance showing. Obama saying that Israel should return to it’s pre-1967 borders was exactly what GW Bush called for, too. Are you saying Bush lacked concern as well?
This Obama hate is really getting ridiculous.
The problem with the majority of Jews who are against Mel Gibson is that they are at the same time against their own interests by being part of the rank and file liberals who supported this administration that would have Israel compromise with the Palestinians to the point of becoming vulnerable by shrinking their territory that is retained only to enable Israel to defend itself. Jews really work against themselves by not really recognizing the ones who are truly against them and attacking those who aren’t while ignoring those and even attacking the ones who show kindness to them.
Shut up, troll.
Intelligent banter, spewing the same tired rants that are so typical of mindless putz…
Familiarity with the subject matter and even reading the post thoroughly enough might allay your ignorance. The Maccabeean REVOLT was a response to the actions of the Greek and Egyptian king Antiochus, who teamed with non-Jewish citizens to suppress Judaism, trashed the Jewish temple, then established laws stating that if Jews did not convert to his pagan religion, that they would die. He then went about raiding Jewish towns finding Jewish families who had had their children circumcised and slaughted them, hanging the circumcised infants from their mothers’ necks. Such oppression is what the Jews, led by Judah Maccabee, revolted against. No one watching a movie accurately depicting these historical events is going to think the Jews started it. Rather, they will feel sympathy for Jews and righteous indignation against anti-Semitic oppression.
I am a member of the tribe (e.g. I am Jewish), and I have been quite dismayed at how Gibson has been treated, specifically from my more politically Liberal(in the modern sense) brothers. For One thing, there was an outcry about the Passion, anti-Semitism was supposed to spread like wildfire…didn’t happen. After the Passion, Gibson black listed by Hollywood production companies (he had his own for the Passion), man of which are run by Jewish directors, who in likely viewed Mel Gibson as a dangerous right wing “Jesus freak”. Look I am not going to invite Gibson the my kids Bar/Bat Mitzvah’s, but I am not going to stone in glass house either. The Bottom line is my flock hasn’t shown much love to Gibson…
As a Jew, we are commanded by G-d not to condemn the sinner but to hope that the sinner will turn away from sin. Not for nothing our views on sin and restoration may not be the same as our Christian friends, but they sure rhyme. So Here Gibson, A VERY TALENTED ENTERTAINER is going to make a movie which will bring the Story of Channukah to the mainstream. It will honor the struggles of Jewish People versus the Syrians under the reign of Antiochus IV. If the story is done correctly, it will show Jewish People fighting for the freedom to worship G-d as they choose. It will honor the Jewish resistance fighters of the day. Will their be artistic interpretation…Its a movie…But Overall I am happy he is doing this.
Lets judge the man on his deeds not his words.
Consequently I find it ironic that some of my fellow Liberal Jews went out of their way to defend the 9-11 Mosque. Gibson may have said a few nasty things when he was drunk…but at least he isn’t advocating people blowing themselves in cafe’s
Not that it has much to do with this movie, but the concept of sin is a Christian one, and this blame the sin not the sinner idea is not in Judaism.
Either you’re ignorant of your religion or lying about being a member. My guess is the latter.
Also, Jews were accused of all being Commies during the Red Scare just because SOME of them were.
It’s the same with the ‘9-11 Mosque’; don’t blame all Muslims because of the actions of a minority.
My apologies, but I have to take you to task for what was a totally ignorant comment. The Maccabees didn’t start a war. They defended their religious freedoms and defeated a general/emperor everyone thought was unbeatable. That’s a story anyone could find inspiring. Further, why be so uncharitable? Do you struggle with no demons? Are you perfect? Do you not have your own prejudices or own points where you were poorly formed? Were you not raised to think certain things others find abhorent? If so, you probably think those others are the ones who are crocked, not you, because it’s what you were raised taught and raised with. So why be so hard hearted and hard on Gibson when you yourself are not perfect? Take the beam out of your eye before taking the splinter out of another’s.
Gibson’s crime is being famous. How many of us have, at one time or another, during a period of personal crisis, knocked down a few drinks and made misogynistic (hatred of women) or racist comments, even if they were in the form of jokes? Plenty of us.
Apparently you are unfamiliar with the book of Maccabees 1 and Maccabees 2 found only in the Jewish Torah and Catholic Bible. Throw that edited King James fiction away and get educated.
Highly delusional, perhaps if you walk away from your statue and saint worship and study a real bible you will find the truth. Educated in what? paganism? One of the commandments are to make no image of anything on the earth or in heaven or under the earth. Have no other gods before me. What do you put in God’s presence but images? Even the crucifix. The cross itself becomes an object that is almost deity. The Bible is the lamp for your feet and light for your path not the rituals in the Catholic Church. Possibly, feeling that you have to pray to Mary in order to get to her son in order to approach God is getting in the way of you knowing that it was the reason that Christ came to be a mediator between God and man. It is not the priest, it is not any saint, and it isn’t Mary. It is the messiah, the mediator, the high priest, the sacrifice for sin, Jesus. We need that sacrifice or else we would be in our sins. He would be Yom Kipur but it isn’t for one day (day of atonement) but forever. The Catholic bible is not the real one but full of non cannonized chapters…
Maccabees is not in the Torah. Really???What???It is a historical book and not in the Holy book….
“Jewish Torah”??? Is there another one besides the Jewish one??? The Torah is the 5 books of Moses beginning with Genesis,Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Maccabees is a separate book.
The word “Torah” means law of commandment. The Bar Mitzvah is son of commandment. Bar (son) Mitzvah (commandment) there is no Maccabees in the Torah. The Torah is law not history. For someone who writes like they want to portray intelligence, you are inherently ignorant of everything but your Catholic bible. That is only where you could be thought of as an expert. So stay there….
Funny comment, very well put. By the way subsequent poster I seriously doubt that anyone is suggesting a blacklist, just that this is incredibly ironic, an obvious act of P.R. “atonement.”
This DOES NOT disprove that Mel Gibson is an anti-semite!! As long as he can make a buck (and he needs lots of them), he doesn’t care that this movie is about a jewish hero. He’s probably thinking that it is better that he gets the money than a jewish person!
Let’s face it. Mel Gibson is an amazing film talent. He is the only individual who, at the time, had been able to produce, direct and distribute his own film – no matter what the content. I mean, really, what Hollywood studio was ver going to greenlight Passion of the Christ?
He got wasted one night, and being the product of a racist father, he spoke terrible words that were disgusting.
But we would be ruining film history by blacklisting him. It would be like forcing Heath Ledger’s death so that we could never again enjoy a genius.
And a genius is exactly who Mel Gibson is. So please, wake up, and deal with it. You have no case against him… plus, we need him! Hollywood’s think tank is dry, there is not imaginative or creative minds anywhere ( for example, remakes, and remakes, and sequels to terrible films). This is a breeding ground for crap.
We need Mel. And may Heath Ledger, the greatest young actor ever, rest and his family be well.
Thanks,
THE GAJONKA
ps- check out my site if you dig my thoughts. And I DO dislike Jay Z very much. Thanks.
pss_ And I think jonah hill and Seh rogen are no – talent jokes.
psss_ The Muppet movie looks like it is going to rock!
The irony is that the Maccabees where an intolerant bunch of murderers most closely related, not to William Wallace, but to the Taliban.
The Maccabees would probably slit the throats of every one of us for begin reform or even conservative.
We now know the tolerant Hellenistic world in fact resulted in a huge upswelling and renewal of Judaism which became vibrant and widespread specifically during the tolerant Hellenistic rule in the Near East, Anatolia and North Africa.
The Maccabees hated the vibrant, varied, evolving Judaism, stoked civil wars within Jewish communities and then killed so many Jews that the Syrio-Greek authorities had to attempt to repress the slaughter.
You don’t know what you’re talking about. The countries in which the Taliban is based do not suffer from anti-Islamic governments. The Maccabees led the revolt against king Antiochus, who was turning non-Jews against Jews, trashing Jewish places of worship including the temple, declaring laws stating that if Jews did not convert to his pagan religion that they would be tortured and killed, and going about raiding Jewish town and villages, finding families who had their male children circumcised and slaughtering them, hanging the infants from their mothers’ necks. The Maccabees’ oppression and revolt in response to it was very similar to that of William Wallace’s, and very unlike the Taliban’s situation. And, try to tell me another way that the Jews could have responded in face of such a tyrannic monarchy? We seem to forget that this was not a 21st-century democracy, in which the Jews’ elected officials could go on the airways and throw sound bites at the king and his policies to make him look bad.
airWAVES, rather…
Dov, so you think the Hellenistic world under Antiochus Epiphanes was “tolerant” as compared to what, the so-called “tolerant” communism system in the former Soviet Union? Are you really that ignorant of what really happened to the Jews who refused to follow his “tolerant” Hellenistic way under his rule. Unless you think that tolerance equals forcing the Jews to think & worship in the superior Hellenistic way. His attitude of those poor ignorant Jews don’t know what is best for them. So I’ll just have to destroy their temple, insult & mock them by sacrificing a pig on the temple altar considered by them an unclean animal,an abomination. Then steal all the temple treasure, & forbid the practice of their religion, burn all their sacred books, & force them to worship & sacrifice to their idols under the penalties of death like crucification. That’s what you call tolerance!!! I’m seeing another brand of “tolerance” being forced upon all those who don’t agree with current PC way.
Herm
It seems that the left want to dinegrate the jews until someone on the right says something that can serve there purpos. Such as if someone who does not like the fact that the jews KiLLED Jesus, but only wants to express his diaproval of that fact. Never said he wanted any harm to become of them. F#@kING hipocrits.
Why would a Christian disapprove of the killing of Jesus? Isn’t that what he sent to Earth to do — die for our sins?
And by the way, the Romans killed Jesus, not the Jews.
Gibson’s career is done so he figures he can worm his way back in with a Jewish film. Warner Bros. seems to love sexist racist monsters and the balding old men probably think the tabloid controversy will make it a success. What a cesspool. All these old men are entirely out of touch with today’s world, and no amount of transparent pathetic online comment campaigns will spin people around. Get with the times. Mel Gibson is over. Does Warner Bros wish to be over too?
Gibson is not doing this film to “worm his way back in” with the Jewish community. Immediately after the release of “Passion of the Christ”, he was already talking about doing a movie based on I and II Maccabees, but he chose to do Apocalypto next instead. Gibson is obviously just a very tortured artist. And I also commend Jodie Foster, a close friend of Gibson’s who also knows the complexities of the man in spite of the fact that he’s also reputed to “hate” homosexuals [and of course in today’s tyranny of relativism, ANY point of disagreement on morality is redefined as “hate” in order to justify hatred for Catholics and the removal of their rights ], who insisted that he be in the movie “The Beaver”. Much of the reason why people hate Gibson is that he is a Roman Catholic, and those people delight in his downfall because to them it is another all Roman Catholics.
they should call this movie : ” Judas Maccabeus ” its sounds great, and its my nick on Age of mythology .
i thought they did this move already the hebrew hammer?
Let’s see: the story of the Maccabees is the story of how Hannukah celebrates an instance in which the Jews resist an attempt to tell them not to openly celebrate their religion. It’s in December. this should be fun.
Perhaps Gibson is looking for a little redemption. Good for him, if that is so.
Gibson certainly has his demons, I don’t admire him for that. Hopefully he is trying to heal and wish him well for that.
I think it will be block buster.
His Passion of the Christt is my favorite movie of all time.
God is love and forgiveness. Mel went on a bender and said some silly things, who hasn’t? I see so many Jewish people down on Gibson here, do you feel the same way about young germans also?. No one will forget about the old days with Hitler and beyond but give peace a chance within yourself and enjoy the exposure this film will give the Jewish race.
By the way, who killed Jesus?
Jesus told people the truth and showed the reality of who they really are. People don’t want the truth, they want compromise. Tell them that they are great, even if it is a lie. The emperor’s new clothes concept. Do not tell me that I am naked. The Jews, the Romans, and any and all of us killed Jesus. Why, because our reaction to truth tells a lot about the evil in our hearts as much as what is said when we’re drunk. Jesus said that it is out of the abundance of the heart that we utter with our mouth. So, it was in there already. But who doesn’t have it in our hearts? They killed Jesus just like they killed the prophets who told them the truth. The Romans were in power so they get the overall blame but Jesus wasn’t condemned under Roman law. He actually died in the place of Barabas, a murderer who was set free to appease the crowd and Jesus was crucified instead. So both parties were complicit. Yet, everyone who ever sins is also complicit. Anyone who victimizes someone else for being different or because they are an object of envy or jealousy, is also complicit. We all killed Christ because we all rejected him. We reject God daily when we don’t go to him, our time with God.
Probably will have a lot of blood and gore in it. He seems to thrive on that, as is typical in most of his work. Poor Mel, get your act together, you insensitive bastard!
….Finally someone is writing a decent story that
should be interesting as well as inspiring to watch.
Hope its accurate as well.
And John Galliano is starring!
Badumbum!
was going to snark but couldn’t top this. well done.
I believe his role would be limited to costume design, and perhaps casting (since he’s openly voiced his objections to ugly(!) people).
Well since much of what the Maccabees did was Jew on Jew violence, I’m sure there will be plenty of anti-semites in the flick… They’ll just be semites…
“Well since much of what the Maccabees did was Jew on Jew violence, I’m sure there will be plenty of anti-semites in the flick”
The Maccabees are Jewish heroes. Are you suggesting that Hanukka is an anti-Jew celebration and that Jews who celebrate it are anti-Jew?
is this a fucking joke? Warner bros is pathetic
Hollywood is tolerant of all types, right? What does HE still offend you? Please. Yawn.
Your comment offends.
George,
Do you hate Jews so much that you’re upset that Warner Bros. is prepared to make a picture that favors Jewish heroes?
“Maccabee’s triumph… is celebrated by Jews all over the world through Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights. This subject matter is a decided departure for the filmmaker who directed The Passion of the Christ.”
The author is being a bit ignorant here. They are both bible stories for the Catholics. How, exactly, is that a “decided departure”?
Agreed… It’s a “departure” for a guy who’s made three historical period films that involve sacrifice and battle to make another historical film that involves sacrifice and battle?
Wait, Maccabees – 2 books of the OLD Testament – “both bible stories for the Catholics”?! Yes, the Protestants dumped the books because of the stuff about Pergatory, and 2nd century rabbis dumped ’em because of the Christ references…but COM’ON! They’re JEW-written books.
Actually they are not part of jewish religious writings. They are included in the hagiography and were written in greek, not hebrew, the language of the jews, or even in aramaic, the lingua-franca of the near and middle east.
Benito…
Ignorance. The Sandhedrin, when they finally created their canon in the second century, removed Maccabees for several reasons… one of the primary ones being because it was written in Greek and not in Hebrew. The Protestants removed the books from the Christian Bible (as it had been universally accepted since the late 4th early 5th centuries) because they chose to adopt the late Jewish canon over the Christian one… for the OT. As an aside, Luther wanted to remove 4 books from the New Testament as well but, under pressure, left them in there but added a disclaimer that he thought they were uninspired.
The Jews still venerate the Maccabees, while the Protestants are completely ignorant of them. The Jews still celebrate Hanukka in rememberance of the Maccabee rebellion. Just because they don’t have the books in their canon doesn’t mean they don’t believe what’s in them.
P.S. What the Protestants find offensive about Maccabees is the reference to praying for the dead. Orthodox Jews still do this as well.
Not Christian, but Catholic because there is a difference.
I wouldn’t say that we’re completely ignorant of the Maccabees. I knew about them. Figures, So all Protestants are ignorant of the Maccabees?? How is it possible for you to know this?? Did you question every protestant? I was never asked. I knew about the Maccabees. I guess I turned your naive and bigoted theory on its head, didn’t I???
Martin Luther isn’t / wasn’t the voice for all protestants. We have brains that are individual in nature and do not think as one brain. So, he thought that some other books were uninspired?? I think that it is a group decision and not one man’s.
Exactly! This fits in with Gibson’s Catholic themed faith movie, like Passion: most likely it will have very little Bible in it, like Passion which was entirely Anne Catherine Emmerich and ZERO Bible, this story about the Maccabees will most likely be filled with story
“Gibson’s Catholic themed faith movie, like Passion”
Passion was offensive towards jews. The guy can make all of the self-serving movies he wants to. The fact is the Maccabees would have laughed in the face of a Jew who says he is the son of G-d. What does G-d need a son for. And a dying son/G-d? Isn’t there a contradiction there? Of course not, when you are a rabid catholic like Gibson.
Maccabee and J.C. are diametricallly opposed. Mel is not concerned about things outside of his ego-centric world.
only radical zionist ADL members such as Mikey would see the new testament as “anti-semitic”, whatever that means….
Jesus Christ shall return soon, and his first stop will be Goldman Sachs…..
Gibson’s passion is now an Easter classic….he is hated because he made the movies himself, and of course the “chosen” ones did not get their cut……..that is the REAL reason why he was lambasted!
Dream on, buddy.
Mikey:
“Passion was offensive towards jews.”
It wasn’t offensive to learned Orthodox Jews who understand that Catholics don’t blame the Jews for Christ’s crucifixion… we blame ourselves. Orthodox Jews understand Catholic theology better than most Catholics. So, it was really only the secular Jews (those who don’t truly understand nor follow their faith) that were offended by “The Passion”. I have yet to meet a Jew that was offended by the movie.
Is that your cute way of saying you’ve NEVER actually met a Jewish person?
Hey, feel free to like Mel Gibson AND his movies. To each their own. But please don’t pretend the film (“Passion”) is NOT anti-Semitic. It is.
I’m not religious…at all…and I admire Gibson’s ability as a director and even as an actor, even whilst I despise him as a person, but anyone with knowledge of filmmaking will tell you: Passion is CLEARLY anti-Semitic.
When the Jewish man accepts Jesus as his friend and, if I recall, as the son of god, he stands and LITERALLY sheds the one piece of his Judaism he had: his Yarmulke. The wind (i.e., Director Gibson cuing the wind machine) takes it off as he opens his arms wide.
So in order to be accepted by others, in order to live righteously, you must – according to the film’s narrative – shed your Judaism and accept Jesus.
If the Iranian woman I used to work with could recognize that as anti-Semitic, then you should. Unless perhaps you’re a Taliban man?
Ah, but seriously. I used to have 4 or 5 other examples…that’s but one, and I’ve put the film out of my memory beyond that.
The Passion is not anti-semetic but is, to date, the film which comes closest to the truth of what actually happened. The truth cannot be “anti-“anything, except that which is false.
The statement, “Orthodox Jews understand Catholic theology better than most Catholics.” is absolutely false. If they understood Catholicism they would be Catholic, themselves. Instead, Orthodox Jews believe and teach that Jesus was a heretic, which is a gross misunderstanding.
I am a Catholic who has had many interactions with Jews. On a personal level, they can be great people. However, I’ve been in settings where the majority of people in a gathering were Jews. In those cases, and without exception, anyone who is not a Jew is treated as if they have a contagious disease. Therefore, as a whole, Jews complain about antisemetism but when it comes right down to the facts, many of the, certainly not all, but many tend to be more racist and biased against others, including Christians, than any other group on the planet. It’s not wonder that the population of Christians in the holy land has plummeted under Jewish rule.
Lastly, I am not anti-semetic. I love Jews as brothers and sisters. However, it gets tiring to hear about the holocaust of Jews as if they are they only ones to suffer a holocaust. Everyone seems to have forgotten about the holocaust of Christians by the Bolshevik Jews during that revolution. They, being primarily Jews and led by Jews, murdered millions of Christians, with many thousands literally being crucified. Yet how often do we hear Christians whining about that?
Yes, the Jews of the time were responsible for Jesus’ crucifixion. Many of them repented. Many did not. Do this day, the orthodox Jews remain anti-Christian and teach that the Christian messiah was a heretic. So, the know nothing of Catholicism.
Mikey:
“Of course not, when you are a rabid catholic like Gibson.”
Not only has he proven his ignorance more than once (especially on topics Jewish, of which he claims to be), but he has also proven that the last great and well-accepted prejudice of our day is anti-Catholicism. Another internet troll with the backing of the KKK. Good job, buddy.
You don’t know what you’re talking about. “Son of God” or “sons of God” is a common title in the Old Testament. The title “son of God” was applied in the Old Testament to persons having any special relationship with God. Angels, just and pious men, the descendants of Seth, were called “sons of God” (Job 1:6; 2:1; Psalm 88:7; Wisdom 2:13; etc.). In a similar manner it was given to Israelites (Deuteronomy 14:50); and of Israel, as a nation, we read: “And thou shalt say to him: Thus saith the Lord: Israel is my son, my firstborn. I have said to thee: Let my son go, that he may serve me” (Exodus 4:22).
Also, Jesus never called himself the Son of God.
The only problem is that all Jews are sons of God, aren’t they?? Jews die all the time and not because they are sinners, even the righteous ones, sometimes in droves, the holocaust. Who cares if Maccabee believed in Jesus or not?? Many people didn’t believe the world was flat during Columbus’s time but that didn’t change the truth. I refuse to accept that Jews die just because they sin. The Holocaust was not successful because the Jews sinned by eating pork or violating other dietary restrictions. There is evil in the world and that is what Jesus came for not because the world is inherently good, because that logic is flawed. The universe does not go toward order but disorder. Someone needs to order it, God. Maccabees was a hero yes but an expert on theology, no.
It is not a good comparison bc Mel Gibson’s Passion was dripping with anti-semitic cinematography. Who has the truer religion is debatable.
Jesus, his mother Mary, and his disciples were all Jews. Not sure what was so anti-semitic about the cinematography. Can you explain?
What is “anti-semitic cinematography”? Passion of the Christ was a faithful (no pun intended) visualization of the Catholic 12 Stations of the Cross. The narrative was taken straight from the Christian Gospels. And, many of the scenes were movie reproductions of Carravgio paintings. To call that anti-Semitic is at once ignorant and tantamount to calling Christianity categorically anti-Semitic, which would be itself bigoted, if you ask me.
Where, can you cite examples from the movie? Have you actually seen it? Or are you repeating the same thing, others are saying??
So convenient to say something is antiSemitic and yet not cite any examples. I would say that makes your argument an empty one. You probably never watched the movie and are just repeating what you hear. Tell me that I am wrong. While you’re doing that, cite some actual examples supporting your talking points.
Rich, what exactly is your point? Stories for Catholics? A rather general statement, but I do sense your bigotry! Sorry dude, the jews are not the only persecuted people in the history of the world, but are very good at keeping the propaganda going. Does a man not have a right to express his opinion about the jews? Whats your problem with the Catholic people? We suffered far worse persecutions for our faith than many other groups (think of the Irish Pal!). But we are not in show business and force populations to repent to the Jews.
Kevin,
Watch yourself. You’re beginning to sound as anti-Semitic as Mikey. It is not “propaganda” that the Jews have been persecuted for millenia. Catholics have been heavily persecuted too, especially in the first 4 centuries after Christ and in the last few most recent centuries. For some reason, Catholic persecution is way under-reported in both the news and in the history books… but it does not follow that Jewish persecution is therefore propaganda.
Jewish people wrote the deuterocanonical books, or “apocrypha” of which the books of Maccabees are a part. Whether or not a Jewish group accepted these books as being within the canon of scripture, which many groups did, is beside the point, so your trying to show off your knowledge about how the books of Maccabees exist as Scripture in Catholic Bibles is a bit forced. The books of Maccabees were revered by Jews for over a century before Christ as records of historical events which were central to the Jewish nation’s development and identity. If the Jewish nation were to survive the oppression of King Antiochus, the only solution was revolt involving physical force. Antiochus trashed the temple, was tearing down Jewish places of worship, forcing Jews to convert to his pagan religion under pain of torture and death, and killing Jewish families who had had their male children circumcised, hanging the infants from their mothers necks. These are real historical events affecting the Jewish nation, whether or not the books of Maccabees happens to be included in the Old Testament canon of your Bible.
Oy!
Mel Gibson and Eszterhas should go gently into that good obscurity. But because Mel made hundreds of millions from his Jesus snuff movie he will attempt to buy redemption again and again and again. We are stuck with him until his money runs out.
Read Peter Biskind’s profile of Gibson in a recent Vanity Fair. Gibson is no bigot. Jodie Foster called him the “best loved man in Hollywood” and Biskind, to his own surprise, found this to be largely true! Is Gibson bi-polar? Most certainly. Is he more generous and kind than you (most likely) are? Most certainly.
Obscurity? Gibson is one of the top movie talents of all time.
I understand that you’re hatred blinds you, but really…you should just shut up so you don’t look so ignorant.
Best comment on the string.
Mel is playing it safe by playing Judah Maccabe, an ancient Jewish hero. I’d like to see Mel take on a Jewish hero from the last 200 years. Probably too controversial for any studio.
Then again, the Maccabes invented Hanukah. This film could be a Hanukah classic. Mel could end up with the biggest grossing Jesus film and the biggest grossing Hanukah film! And THAT my friends is why they call it “show BUSINESS”.
Now, Mel Brooks as Judah Maccabe: that’s a movie I want to see.
Neither of us know what Mel Gibson’s motives are for making this film. He could be “playing it safe”, as you say, or he could just be making a movie based on a Biblical story that is venerated by Jews, Catholics, and Orthodox Christians alike.
A Jewish BRAVEHEART? Not the best call, IMHO. By many accounts, the Maccabees were thugs and religious extremists, a subject Mr. Gibson might well want to stay away from. But hey, at least they gave us Hannukah.
The Maccabees were relgious extremists? Dude…
Before he came back to Jerusalem to defile the temple, Antiochus Epiphanes – who thought he was Zeus – rounded up all the Jews of Alexandria and gave them a choice. Eat this pig for me and take this tattoo to prove you did it, or die. THAT is the insanity the Maccabees were fighting against.
Wait. The Maccabee revolt was an anti-Bacon movement?
I’ll be skipping this movie. And eating bacon.
That wasn’t funny. It was stupid and insensitive, especially to Jews. It was also the product of a mind of mush after several years of American public education (aka. complete and utter ignorance).
BaconBits, There was a bit more going on with regard to the oppression the Jews suffered under Antiochus. Rich just offered one example to show how INSANE Antiochus was. Antiochus also was killing anyone who refused to convert to his pagan religion, destroying Jewish places of worship, and killing Jewish families who had circumcised male children, hanging the infants from their mothers’ necks.
The Spartans were ancient Greece’s equivalent of The Master Race, and that inconvenient truth didn’t get in the way of their movie.
I totally agree. This is the problem when people confuse film narrative with actual history. The Spartans were badasses, but they were no “grand light of Greece” as the film implies. Athens — which also admittedly had some pretty terrible institutions — influenced Western culture far more with its examinations of politics, philosophy and art.
For all we know Wallace could have derived from Wallish, a European Jewish surname. Perhaps BRAVEHEART was already Jewish?
There was no other conceivable way to combat the oppression Antiochus inflicted upon the Jewish nation than by being a thug. Antiochus was raiding Jewish towns and villages and killing Jewish families who had their male children circumcised, hanging the infants from their mothers’ necks. This was a tyrannic monarchy, not a democracy where the Jews could elect officials who could make the king look bad or threaten to draw others away from supporting him. The Jewish nation would have been wiped out had the Maccabees not led others to be thugs like them and use physical force against Antiochus and his forces.
This is yet another thinly veiled attempt at redemption for an actor who imploded and has failed to recognize the unique markings of an industry which has turned its back on him. This project will never see light of day. Jeff and Jeff (and Greg) will succumb to pressure from all quadrants, and ultimately, Mel will be tiptoeing his exit stage left (right in his case), back to the far reaches of has-been-dom where he can drink with impunity and revel in his heyday of endless success, thwarted only by his own demons.
Don’t count on it. This will be a huge success.
Get a clue. Your as biased as you claim he is. Apocalypto and the Passion were Amazing!
Must be nice to be so perfect.
TG:
“This is yet another thinly veiled attempt at redemption for an actor who imploded…”
Well, this is a rather stupid thing to say. I, personally, am annoyed by Mel Gibson, especially for the reasons that I am Catholic and he is a schismatic Catholic that believes he’s more Catholic than the Pope… and every time he blunders the ignorant press (followed by the ignorant public) takes the opportunity to attack the Catholic Church, of which he is not in communion with.
But to apply such ridiculous motives to a film director (no matter how bad of a man he is) is completely silly. Though I admittedly don’t know what the man’s motives are either, I think it would be more accurate to say that he has the money, he likes making movies (even if they will collapse at the box office), and he has the backing of the industry to make whichever movie he likes… so he makes them.
Polanski actually raped and molested young children, yet no one in the industry would dare to publicly remark that each of his movies were a “thinly veiled” attempt at this, that, or the other.
That’s pretty bold of you to state as fact that Gibson is not in communion with the Catholic Church as you have know way of knowing that unless you are his confessor.
they’ve picked mel to death damn near…he just wants some peace and to do what he loves to do…make great movies.
This should be a good movie, maybe a great movie. Mel’s got a passion for biblical epics it would seem and this is great subject matter. I hope he’s ready for the onslaught of the left wing jews though. They hate Mel and they hate their own heritage but the rest of the Jews in the world and most of the Christians will flock to see this movie even when the Hollywood leftards pan it. The Muslims not so much. ha ha
Gibson ought to be directing The Expendables 2. Hell, Eszterhas ought to be writing it. But this sounds cool.
Boffo Beaver Box Office for Bros!
I hope it succeeds for Mel’s sake. I think it will be a great lesson for all.
Sheer genius. Maybe next we can have Fred Phelps put together a movie about the gay civil rights movement.
As my people say: “OY!”
Yeah Mel, we’ve had that joke already. So clever. Can’t hear it enough.
I can’t think of anything more disgusting than Mel. Period.
The very fact that WB would condone this is beyond me. Yes, its business, but Jesus (pun?) why collaborate anything Jewish with Mel.
He is an utter fucking shame to the religion and this business.
I can think of a lot of things far more disgusting than Mel Gibson:
Ob*ma, Chávez, Senate Democrats, Pelosi, the Black Caucus, etc.
And I bet you’ve never been called a racist.
Im a white christian ergo Im a racist. Its a badge I wear with pride.
You do know your Jesus was a brown-skinned Jew, right?
I agree 100%.
Mel got drunk, he ranted, he married the wrong girl, so what?
All those Mel haters no doubt have done much worse, and are hiding it.
I don’t have a dog in this fight, but I can say that Gibson makes great films. He is a gem.
@drott ski. Oh? Did Obama, Pelosi, etc threaten their loved ones too?
Add yourself to that list
If Roman Polanski, a convicted child rapist; can continue to make movies and receive accolades from the adoring Hollywood culture, then a bad drunk who runs off at the mouth can surely make whatever film he likes and you don’t have to go see it. I look forward to watching this film. I certainly think Roman Polanski is a far more disgusting person than Mel Gibson.
Knee-jerk react much?
+1
What liberals hate about Mel is that he isn’t one of them. I can’t tell you how often I have been called a Nazi because of my conservative beliefs, but I haven’t picketed any liberal racist. I haven’t tried to police who should and shouldn’t work in Hollywood. Back when liberals were accused of being communists we are told that it was a HORRIBLE tragedy to blacklist them. Now a conservative (whose views are not always the same as mine) goes through a divorce and says some regrettable things in a drunken rant and he is supposed to go off into a corner and die.
Tell me again about liberal compassion and tolerance, please.
He left his wife for a mistress. He created his own religious sect because he believed he was more Catholic than the Catholic Church. He’s fairly “liberal”.
No, but Mel Gibson made a movie about Jesus and has somewhat Christian theology. Otherwise, the comparison is great. There is an agenda here and that is to silence someone’s speech. When he made the passion, he became public enemy # 1, and then he had that anti semitic rant so that gave them material to use against him. Why they can overlook a pedophile like Polanski and crucify someone for saying a few words is really strange. Why they can react to words and yet dismiss a person’s actions, is amazing.
If Jack Warner was still alive and running WB he would have nothing to do with Gibson.
Fabulous news! I’ll look forward to this. Gibson is one of a kind.
Joseph — mega, mega dittos! Mel Gibson is incredibly talented, and has more than paid for his mistakes. Godspeed, Mel.
is it mega dittos if a lefty had said the same things as Gibson?
Left says all kinds of horrible statements, including “we will bring the gun” and any Joe Biden’s statements, for some reason they are color blind, they quit seeing all together.
Well good for him. Can’t say I know what goes on in his head on a daily basis, but could be a seriously good flick, and hey Gibson might even learn something in the doing. Gotta give him big points just for the effort.
I’m no cynic: Reformed Gibson and Reformed Eszterhas could actually make a damned fine film.
Talk about chutzpah…
Pushing everything else aside, the idea of the director of “Apocalypto” making another waaaaaaay long time ago historical epic is a good thing.
The is like “The Producers” in reverse!
Interesting. I want to see this.
These are two men who have both been through fire. They know what it is to be at the height, to suffer, to be ostracized … they have both lived. They know what life is.
God uses the most unlikely people as messengers and as warriors.
What gifts God has given, He will never let go to waste.
Joe knows how to write and Mel is a powerful writer/director.
There is a bigger picture, a bigger goal … always is, but few realize it.
Best to you both.
I so agree with your comment and I am so dismayed by many of the other comments, plus the insinuation that The Passion of the Christ was an anti-Semitic film. The man, Mel Gibson, is a man and has his flaws. His work has been tremendous, and The Passion of the Christ was an historically accurate and spiritually beautiful, apparently career-courageous piece of work. Let us proceed gentlemen; i look forward to your project.
Anita that is very well said comment! Best of luck to Joe and Mel!
Great point. God did use Mel in making the passion as well as Jim Caveziel. Would be great to see him play Judah. God always uses ones you would not expect and they usually have character flaws.
Great comment. Thanks for the wise words.
I know Mel has wanted to do this for ages. He loves and believes in The Book of Maccabbes, and wants to make this story. It should be outstanding, hope he directs as well. For all of you naysayers, look out. I wish he was writing as well. I think it will be the bomb.
This story is JEWISH history, not a Christian text where he (Mel Gibson) can turn the characters into archetypal Jewish hook nosed people.
We DONT WANT mel making movies on our history. More worthy filmmakers exist out there, we dont want a Jew-hater doing movies on our history!!
yeah why don’t we get some skinheads to write a book about Passover next?
Newsflash! Maccabees is found only in the Jewish bible and Catholic Bible. It’s not a far stretch Gibson is involved in this movie.
Well, he will have Jews in the cast. If they don’t like the way that they are portrayed, they can riot. The passion had a lot of Jews in the cast and did you hear any of them protest against the portrayal of Jews in the movie?? no…I have to say about the passion that at least the part of Jesus was portrayed by a person of Jewish ethnicity, yet not of Jewish religious views, though he probably has family members that hold Jewish religious views so could relate. Most, if not all, movies about Christ have as the actor that plays Jesus a person who is not Jewish in any sense of the word and could never look Jewish. The passion didn’t portray Jews with outrageously large noses. Adam Sandler does as much in his movies, check out “Just go with it” and the huge nose that he has. If anyone is guilty of portraying Jews in a negative light it is Jews, themselves. The attitudes and views of Jews that have expressed their anger and hatred at Mel Gibson have showed themselves to be hypocrites when it comes to having tolerance. It just shows that people who claim that others are bigots usually are bigots, themselves.
KELLY – HOW CAN ANY STORE ABOUT JEWS BY GIBSON BE OUTSTANDING? are you nuts? did you forget to take your meds today? He is so racist, slanted and tained. Forget his holocaust denying father but this maggot Gibson is an anti-Semite, however you cut it. We might as well have the Grand Wizard of the KKK write a movie about Martin Luther King Jr. I can’t believe this is even a discussion.
You’re an idiot. As I’ve been saying ad nauseum on this very thread, Peter Biskind wrote a piece on Gibson in Vanity Fair recently which shows CONCLUSIVELY that Gibson’s no racist. Indeed by most accounts he’s a kind, brilliant, honorable and loyal guy which is why people like Jodie Foster think so highly of him.
and….It’s a movie…not facts…but entertainment…not a documentary…If you’ve noticed, documentaries are not entertaining and you have to be bored to watch it…
Kelly:
Gibson has made some terrific movies.
Braveheart, hands down is one of my all time favorite movies.
These comments are a lot better if you read them in a Jackie Mason voice.
LOL
Everyone makes mistakes, I have made my fair share. If I can forgive myself I can forgive others.
