All My Children fans probably won’t be too happy about this, but ABC Daytime’s new lifestyle program The Chew, which replaced the canceled ABC soap, launched to solid numbers yesterday. The food-themed series drew 2.5 million viewers for its premiere and 590,000 women 18-49. That was higher than last year’s series premiere of CBS’ The Talk (2.2 million viewers, 568,000 women 18-49), which also replaced a long-running soap. (The Chew did better than The Talk debut in the other women demos too.) Additionally, The Chew matched AMC‘s most recent available weekly audience (for September 12-16) and beat the departing soap in women 18-49 (590,000 vs. 532,000). It exceeded AMC‘s 2010-11 season averages in total viewers (2.5 million vs. 2.4 million) and women 18-49 (590,000/0.9 rating vs. 541,000/0.8 rating). At a fraction of the cost of a daytime drama, if The Chew doesn’t drop dramatically, it should improve ABC’s bottom line significantly. Ironically, the level of interest in The Chew may have surpassed ABC’s own expectations — I hear the show’s website crashed yesterday because it couldn’t handle the incoming traffic. Or it was die-hard AMC fans sabotaging their show’s replacement …

yes im glad to hear. i was pissed that a bunch of losers decided to boycott ABC, cause they dropped those boring soaps. well i told many of people to watch the Chew so, they could prove a point, thinking it would be awhile before the Chew beats AMC ratings, but blinko they did it on the first weekout. Besides, those who boycotted ABC, only gave viewewrs to the other networks, which have cancelled most of theire soaps already. So what message arethey sending. Rick I don’t know where you get your information about soap fans, but not only do I have an above average IQ, I worked up until I became disabled and I still watched the soaps from day 1. And I don’t know where this website gets it’s numbers, but my guess would be ABC fixed them. And if that program’s website crashed, maybe it was because they were so busy deleting comments made by the viewers and I KNOW this because my comment was deleted within an hour.

for one, im sick of people like u stereotyping us soap viewers-we don’t all sit at home watch the soaps and eat all day. some of us are stay at home moms (doesnt mean we’re all stuffing our faces ok), others work outside the home (recording during the day to watch at night) and even men watch it so dont group us all into that stupid stereotype of lazy, bon bon eating housewives. btw the last time i checked ‘ok’ ratings didnt keep lame shows like this on the air very long, plus ive read NEGATIVE comments from actual critics, so im not sure i would get too attached to it if i were you

No need to stare in space for an hour, Young and the Restless has turned out to be an excellent replacement for me. I for one meant it when I said I would never watch ABC when they cancelled the soaps. I now watch ABC 2 hours per day. I watch One Life to Live and General Hospital. As the shows drop so will my ABC viewing time. Very interesting story lines on Young and the Restless.
I’ve been watching Y&R for about 10 years, it’s a great show and has always been rated the top “soap”.

I really like what you said I’ve been watching AMC and OLTL since I was in high school and I’m 57 now these shows are icons the chew is just another food show and while I really like Mario and Michael I just can’t do another food show when I come home from a hard day of work it was really nice to what Jake and Amanda were up to who cares about what people are cooking

While we were sitting at home watching our soaps we also and learned to read and write at the same time. And, FYI, soaps are on 3 times a day if you have cable so we watch them at night after work and after school (where we learned to read and write). I personally don’t understand the proliferation (look it up, Rick) of food shows when obesity is such a growing concern in our country.

I am a college graduate with four kids who chose to stay home to raise them. They range from 17 years down to two. We barely have time to sit around as you state. Please don’t be so hostile to people. Everyone needs their hour of escape each day. For men, it’s mostly baseball, hockey, football and basketball season. If not I’m sure you’re enjoying one of the numerous CSI type programs. I enjoyed All My Children and can’t wait for my one hour to come back in January thanks to Prospect Park. In the meantime, I will use the hour on other things. The Chew will either make it or not. It depends on what TV viewers want. I’m going to the internet.

Im not afraid to say that i enjoyed the 40+ year stories that both shows have had to offer, and am devastated that they are going to be concelled. Watching the shows was a way to escape reality, even for just a few hours of a made up world. Many would agree with me.

I am sitting here watching The Chew. You have made a lobster tail dish covered in caviar. I would suggest you cook meals that are economical. I know this may be difficult for some to understand….but there are alot of people out there that are unemployed, taking pay cuts and layoffs who would love to have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Lobster is way out of reach and to see people gorging on TV is discouraging.

well I guess the young group will enjoy the chew but those of us who are older know how to cook and we are retired , don’t want someone trying to change our lives I don’t know how old you are but if you are a stay a home mom congratulations. I think this is great. my children are all grown, I live with my husband we have been married for over 30 years and sometimes it is nice to get away from reality and just for a while think of someone elses problems, I am glad you watch the chew and all your friends I wonder if it will run for 40 years like the soaps did I don’t think it will, think of the other reality shows that have come and gone in the last few years. The Chew is one of the worst shows I have ever seen. I am a teacher who enjoyed watching “All My Children” as I graded my papers for over 20 years. It helped pass the time as I did my work and was a good escape from reality for an hour. The people on “The Chew” are obnoxious and the audience laughter is so phony. I really miss the soap opera. ABC has made a colossal mistake.
And I think part of that is because some people forgot to take off the timer to change it to ABC at that time.

Soaps address contemporary issues head-on with public interest stories. They educate while they entertain. Subjects like breast cancer, hiv, bullying, etc, were/are a consistent underscore in daytime drama storylines.
I’m so sick of people calling soaps stupid. Yeah, they may have their faults, but tell me if you could put on an hour long show 240 days a year, day in and day out without having a few mishaps and mediocre scripts. Thousands of people lost their jobs because of ABC and their “we don’t really give a shit attitude.” It takes gumption lady! And let me tell you this, a hell of a lot more people watch soaps then what the archaic Nielson ratings say. Oh! So why don’t you try doing a little research before knocking something your mother and grandmother probably watched? At least show them some respect. The problem with soaps is that they simply aren’t cost-effective. They have a great fan base, but they also have huge casts and tons of sets/locations. I think all the networks are missing the forest for the trees. Why not try 4 days of something like The Chew (which costs less and gets more viewers) and do one, solid, well-plotted hour of All My Children – say every Friday? Pour half the money they were spending on five eps into one, and give the writers time to create better scripts. Can anyone at the networks think a little bit out of the box??
What’s sad is that 2.5 million viewers is considered a lot. That’s less than the population of Los Angeles.

I dvr my soap and look forward to relaxing and watching it when I finish cooking dinner feeding my family and cleaning up in the evening. Did u ever stop to think of all the elderly people in nursing homes gathered in the community room watching their stories and discussing them? They don’t have much else to look forward to. WOW, thank you!I could not agree with you more. I have watched AMC and OLTL since day one. Watching the SOAPS was something my mom and I loved doing together. Mom is gone now and I am bedridden with MS but my abc soaps where a wonderful pass time for me. I can’t wait until the are back in January. I also want to see “THE CHEW” go down in flames. After OLTL goes off I will be done with abc for good.

For the record: When my daughter was a freshman in college, the dorm lounges were filled with students getting their soaps “fix”. The soaps audience is much more diverse than many might assume.
Funny how you guys were the first to try and put Susan Lucci in a bad light with fans by printing the article slamming her the day after she came out against Frons. You guys getting some payola from him or is it ABC?
Or maybe they’re just, you know, reporting on entertainment news.
Everything I have read also said it DID NOT do well. I don’t know anyone including my self who will watch it. To me that would be an hour I would never get back. I sure hope it goes down in flames.
Just more proof that soap operas are on life support at best. Most of the AMC fans who post at the boards I go to are saying they won’t watch the online version and won’t support other soaps by viewing them. I’m angry at them for contributing to the loss of my favorite genre.
Well I know I started watching soaps on CBS and NBC hoping that theres a way for the networks to find out, but Im not sure how they are able to find out actual numbers when some people are saying they have to have a box from nielsen rating systems.
Don’t get to excited about those ratings it’s only been on for 2 days. Karma has away of biting you on the butt when you least expect it. Give The Chew 6-7 months at the most. You can chew on that prediction, and swallow it.
All the ads leading up to the premiere of The Chew featured Mario Batali, and then he couldn’t be bothered to show up in the studio for the show.
Bad move.
Even if the Chew goes down in flames….AMC is gone !! They will just replace the Chew with old reruns of a sitcom or some other show we won’t care about.
I’m a big fan of AMC and OLTL but what’s done is done – these shows are NOT coming back to TV and we just need to accept the fact that they are moving online. Let’s hope they do better there than they have been doing on ABC. I really don’t think it is in anyone’s best interest to send out negative energy to the folks at The Chew. That show also employs a lot of people behind the scenes who did not have a hand in the cancellation of AMC so let’s cut them some slack.
What about all the actors and crew that lost their jobs from AMC? Susan Lucci took a pay cut and moved to California to try to make it work. With the technology available today I have to believe there is a better way to actually count how many people are viewing the shows. (either one)I know the cable companies know what we are watching. I watched it from the beginning and some of the actors become almost like family. Sure some of the stories are bizarre but that makes me laugh sometimes. If you don’t like them don’t watch but don’t insult me or assume what I do every day. I don’t understand with the war on obesity why we are having another show about eating. I don’t expect it to make it.
ALL MY CHILDREN WILL BE BACk… In JANUARY of 2012…Prospect park has pick it up along with One life to live and we will have our soap again. as far as people calling us viewers stupid…sticks and stones, sticks and stones!!!

I agree with you Kenlee and RPD you could be completely wrong. If enough people boycotted ABC they would have to reconsider putting the soaps back on.
THE Chew…what a stupid show! if IF ! I want to watch a cooking show it WON’T be on ABC. How many cooking shows do we need??! Soaps entertain and let us see others have troubles to forget ours . Oh and Miffy……MOST shows on tv aren’t Masterpiece Theater….Unless YOU think Jersy shore is……..
Just read that reviews of The Chew have been overwhelmingly negative. No surprise really, AMC fans will make a point of not watching. Huge mistake by ABC, one they will learn to regret through ratings. If viewers want to watch a food show they’ll tune into The Food Network.
It seems that many people tuned in out of curiosity. The ratings will undoubtedly fall dramatically next week.
I have a wonderful Idea for a replacement for The Chew!!!! It’s genius!!! It’s called “The Beat Down” a reality show for the masses!! See you have 20 pissed off soap fans competing for $500,000 and the chance to beat down Brian Frons. Contestants will create and complete physical challenges to come up with the most effective way to execute a good old fashion beat down. With Susan Lucci, Kathy Brier, Catherine Hickland, Robin Strasser, & Michael E. Knight as judges and mentors teaching the contestants skills and strategy. Walt Wiley and Cameron Mathieson as hosts and of course our beat down subject Brian Frons. Now that I will watch!!!
Isn’t this the show where the most famous of the hosts didn’t even bother showing up on the first episode — they just had him briefly on by remote video from a gold course where he was playing. Supposedly for charity but so what — if they can’t manage to get the guy there for the premiere of his own show, why should I tune in?
