BREAKING: Quentin Tarantino has made his choice and negotiations will begin for Jamie Foxx to play the title character in Django Unchained. Tarantino’s next film will be distributed domestically by The Weinstein Company and overseas by Sony Pictures. Production begins November.
Foxx will join Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio and Samuel L. Jackson in a Sergio Leone-style spaghetti Western that Tarantino wrote and has set in Mississippi during slavery. No deal has been made yet, but it shouldn’t take long. While the early focus had Will Smith the likely participant, Deadline told you on June 7 that those talks had gone south, and we were first to identify Foxx as a prime contender for the role along with Idris Elba and Chris Tucker.
The choice of Foxx is an inspired one. After transitioning from comedies to dramas, Foxx proved himself a formidable physical presence in films like Any Given Sunday, Collateral, Jarhead and Law Abiding Citizen, and has shown his acting chops there and in his Oscar-winning turn in Ray. Those facets are prerequisites for the role of Django. And Foxx can ride a horse, too.
Django is a slave who’s liberated by a German dentist-turned-bounty hunter and taught the tricks of the trade by his mentor. Django’s major goal in life is to recover his wife, and to do it he needs to get past the villainous ranch owner Calvin Candie (DiCaprio), who runs Candyland, a despicable club and plantation in Mississippi where female slaves are exploited as sex objects and males are pitted against each other in “mandingo”-style death matches. Candie is a slave’s worst nightmare, and that is where Django’s wife Broomhilda is an abused slave.
Waltz, who won the Oscar for Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, is locked as the bounty hunter and DiCaprio signed on earlier this month. Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction star Jackson is also expected to play the role of Stephen, Candie’s valet who keeps the slaves in line at Candie’s residence. Tarantino turned in his script in late April to The Weinstein Company’s Harvey Weinstein, and Sony Pictures signed on shortly after to distribute in offshore territories.
Django Unchained is being produced by Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction producer Stacey Sher, along with Pilar Savone and Reginald Hudlin. Weinstein, Michael Shamberg and line producer Jim Skotchdopole are exec producing.

Read the script, and Chris Tucker would be a better choice for this role.
What? OMG. Please stop!
Damn. I was really rooting for Kid from “Kid ‘n Play” for this film.
Way to color outside the repetitive casting lines Tarantino. May as well call this Inglorious Inception 2.
inglorious inception 1 would need to come out first? dreams about killing nazis? sounds like my sleep schedule
So disappointing. After Jamie Foxx defended Michael Vick saying that killing dogs in back alley dog fights is a part of “Black Culture,” it’s hard to like or respect or see a movie with him in it.
So true, it is now so hard to respect him doing a film featuring the rape, mutilation, and rampant barbarism of black people, not to mention 300 uses of the n-word, because THAT kind of film is a great representation of black culture and a fun piece of entertainment. Good call Kitty!
Good point. On second thought, it’s great casting!
LOL. Good one. Kitty is just naive.
Reminds me of how Jess Cagle in EW said can he can never watch Tracy Morgan in 30 Rock again without imagining him stabbing a gay kid.
Get over yourselves, you fucking drama queens.
sorry…imo DiCaprio does not bring ruthless to mind no matter what they have him do….and Foxx is an egotistical blowhard.
That’s why it’s acting. Dicaprio has never disappointed, even if the movie isnt great he usually is. Foxx may be a blowhard, but he takes chances instead of falling back on tired roles and usually succeeds. With a QT script this should be gold.
The reason Leo’s character was on the Titanic was because he murdered several small kids and was on the run. That is ruthless!
Get a life! There are many, many reasons not to like this choice but that’s not one of them.
Hear him whip the women
Just around midnight.
Brown Sugar
How come you taste so good.
Foxx is the last choice on that list that I woulda picked, having read the script. Are we this short on formidable black actors that we have, like, 3 or 4 choices. Lame.
Anthony Mackie is a waaaaaaaaaayyyy better choice. And younger. Foxx is too old and too… Foxxxxxxxy. An unknown would be better!!!
Oh, well… we are talking H-town here. Not exactly setting records with originality. Blah. This town is dead creatively.
Regurgitator 5000. Blah.
You must be his agent? Mackie is not all the h-weird machine makes him out to be.
Anthony Mackie! YES!
I wish they had gone with Idris Elba. That guy exudes effortless cool .
Then again, this isn’t exactly a work of art we’re talking about… just the latest slop from Tarantino.
Completely agree.
foxx – yuck.
Cast Stringer Bell!
Chris tucker would’ve been interesting.
You’re smoking crack with a dildo wedged in your as@!
Do you speak from experience?
Escape Clause ‘Once Upon A Time in the West ..’ will allow a more contemporary approach to racism that no doubt will be controversial. The iconic style that requires patience and attention as it builds tension is quite a unique feature in this Directors pallet. Some ‘Hollyhomeboys’ may not like his style but like a meal out of the ordinary, always something to enjoy.
Huh?
What? Did he really support Vick and say that? I never heard that. If he did that is horrible. That is like saying Slavery was okay because it was “part of White Culture” or Auschwitz was okay because it was part of “German Culture”. Those dogs were in prison camps forced to fight for their lives or be killed. If they didn’t kill in the ring…they were killed for “poor performance”. Every time I think of what those dogs went through, I don’t know whether to cry or start smashing up the place. I can understand that, sadly, it is part of “Black Culture”, but he should’ve followed up with a statement saying that it is wrong and it should stop!
Nothing sums it up better than the line in MARLEY AND ME.
“A dog doesn’t care if you’re rich or poor, educated or illiterate, clever or dull. Give him your heart and he will give you his.”
Eff-yew Foxx.
Rant over.
I like you just compared Jews and Blacks to dogs. Way to go buddy. Dog fighting is on par with 300 years of slavery and murder of a race and millions of a race killed in a holocaust.
Excuse me as I wipe the dribble from my keyboard. That’s the best laugh I had all day. Feel like I owe you a reach around. The only thing that would make this better is if you’re a high powered network/movie executive who thought they just posted a profound comment.
Nothing like a rumor from an anonymous post on a blog to get you all stirred up. It’s interesting you would believe something quite slanderous without any corroborating evidence.
The fact that you quoted Marley and Me makes you a wack job.
Whether Foxx stated this is irrelevant. Plenty said that when the Vick thing was going on.
HOWEVER, this “it’s cultural” argument is such BS! Even if that were true (and really, how many white trash morons are involved in dog fighting also), so what? Not everything should be allowed just b/c some contend it is a cultural activity. There are PLENTY of “cultural” activities we don’t allow anymore. Human sacrifice – cultural; cannibalism – cultural; incest – cultural; female cicumcision – cultural; polygamy…oh wait, I guess we don’t properly enforce that one.
You get the point. even the argument that “it’s cultural” does not automatically mean it is ok and should be tolerated. Such barbarism cannot be tolerated.
Really Kitty? You are an idiot. Can you not watch any classic or modern movies with stars that were sexist and anti-semetic either? What does Michael Vick and dogs have to do with his talent? I thought Jamie really proved himself with Collateral and sealed the deal with Ray. I think it’s a great choice. I think he will surprise people with his talent once again.
You missed the point. Talent isn’t the issue. I’m saying he is a man who publicly endorsed cruelty to animals and I don’t want to endorse him in anyway.
Totally agree with you Kitty!
He didn’t endorse cruelty to animals, he said it’s a part of black culture, which it is.
Get over your sorry little self!
I totally agree. If this ahole supports animal cruelty, ban his coward ass and boycott anything and everything he’s attached to!!!!! FU Foxx – xactor.
The same way whack-job Republicans boycott anything starring George Clooney or Sean Penn.
hey, where can I get my hands on the script? I’d love to read it.. thanks.
The internet.
What about googling it?
Kitty – you’re a moron! This will get FOXX another Oscar, and it’s not dog fighting it’s Mandingo Fights…if you read the script you’d be pleased to know that not only do the slaves retaliate on their owners in this story, but the DOGS do too!
Love your work, I was referring to the dog fighting scandal Michael Vick was involved with a few years ago and how Foxx came to his defense saying it was part of black culture. This is not an assessment of his work, but a criticism of his public defense of animal cruelty.
Saying that something is a part of black culture is not the same as a “public defense of animal cruelty”
Love your work is right.
You are a Moron!
Love Your Work, Fremen
What script did you read? I’m very concerned about the HORRIFIC treatment of ALL the Black women in this film. When we first see Broomhilda she is being GANG RAPED, then beat, then raped, then beat, then raped…
Nah man, if you read the script the meaty, potential oscar-contender role does not belong to Django. It would be Calvin or Stephen for supporting. Just watch.
We shall see…
Tarantino is usually excellent when casting, but he’s really screwed the pooch on this one. I mean, DiCaprio as a slave owner? He’s about as threatening as a hamster. Foxx has undoubted acting chops, but he’s totally wrong for this. This has disaster written all over it.
It’s called an analogy, buddy. Sorry you missed the point. Here it is in simple terms for you:
The enslavement, torture, and persecution of living beings. Dogs are living beings.
Luckily, I trust most intelligent people will know what my point was and now you have the cliff notes…buddy.
You did a piss poor job of conveying “your point”.
Most intelligent people will get at least that much.
For one thing it’s a horrible and ludicrous analogy.
You cannot compare Slavery and the Holocaust to animal cruelty.
Period.
And to try and gloss it over with a clumsy lousy explanation like “The enslavement, torture and persecution of living beings. Dogs a living beings” is textbook Syllogistic Fallacy and faulty reasoning 101, as well as lazy sloppy thinking at its finest.
Horses, donkeys and mules are “living beings” too, and by some broad definition one could consider what is done to them vis-a-vis horse-racing, carrying and pulling heavy objects, and being “put down” to be enslavement, torture and persecution.
Are you also advocating for people to stop the “Abuse of horses and the equine species” too?
Or are you just habitually mentally debilitated like that?
You made a Bad Analogy ad you rightly got called out for it!
End of story!
Idris Elba would have been far and away the best choice but this is h-weird. Black men aren’t allowed to be men unless they tow the glaad agenda or look like boys. While foxx isn’t a horrible choice he meets the needs of h-weird but he is far from an inspired choice. Business as usual would be more like it. You seen anything like Luther or Shadow line from abc, cbs, nbc, fox, hbo, amc, showtime? Nope.
It is entirely possible, you know, that Elba read the script, was offended by it or otherwise just didn’t like it. And then passed.
But he wasnt offended by playing Stringer Bell?
It is sad that Hollywood has stopped original casting. I don’t blame Quentin for this. He is a director and he has to cast what the studios and distributors want. He can’t find the money otherwise. So I don’t blame him.
Jamie Foxx is actually a good choice for the role of Django. It’s just too bad that really good unknown actors can’t get a chance who would be great for a role like this one. I have a friend who is from Kenya 6’3″, 210 pounds and is a great actor. He could do this part in his sleep but the business doesn’t allow for opportunities like that anymore.
It’s too bad. It would be great to start seeing new actors out there more so that you can get immersed in the story and not the stars. Granted I think this movie will be good but it would be nice to not be picturing in my mind Jamie Foxx singing with sun glasses and acting cool on the red carpet as he delivers the N” word 1000 times.
Just saying.
long story short I agree with Curtis here
this isnt a documentary its FICTION…your friend might not be able to carry a movie and Jamie has proven that he can entertain, time and time again.
I will be in line to see this! One ticket to Candyland.
Is Tarantino just making this to piss off Spike Lee?
I still think Michael K Williams (Omar from The Wire) would have been the best choice, even better than Will Smith.
Im sure once we see the movie we will not be able to picture anyone other than Foxx in the role though. He is an amazing actor.
oooooooh, Omar! All this Idris talk and that NEVER occurred to me. Shame, shame on me!!!
Omar!!!!
you guys r ALL MISSING THE POINT!
Tarantino NAILED this casting…
Waltz = No Brainer
Jackson = Double No Brainer
Dicaprio = smaaaaart! He’s gonna flip the public’s perception of him and be the guy you HATE…and fuck around & get a supporting Oscar!
Foxx = very good…because the banter between Django & the German is borderline Gene Wilder/Cleavon Little ala “Blazing Saddles”. AND the role involves a serious acting element, MIXED with comedic timing.. Jamie Foxx all the way…
This film will be one of the most UNIQUE major features to drop in 2012…
Agreed.
I read the script – probably the best thing Tarantino’s ever written. Absolutely BRILLIANT movie.
While I’m dubious about DiCaprio in the Candie role and Foxx as Django, I’ve never seen an actor give anything but a brilliant performance in a Tarantino film, so I’ll reserve any judgment and see the film before commenting on that.
But having read the script, I can’t WAIT until this comes out.
And it’s going to drive the right wing INSANE. A revenge story about a black slave eventually slaughtering white slave owners?
The right wing reaction to the movie is going to be predictable and will solidify the “racist” mark their party has by attacking a movie that attacks white, southern slave owners. By them being against it, they will have permanently proven that their dream is to take America back to the Confederate South.
“Best thing Tarantino’s ever written.” Seriously? Granted, it picks up about 2/3 of the way through and gets one rooting for Django to whip some white ass… but it’s certainly muddled, half-witted at times and (yes) slow. It’s certainly not the BEST thing Quentin’s ever written. Of course, that’s subjective.
Should’ve been Flava Flav or Anthony Anderson.
LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I love you for this comment
I did a piss poor job? It sounds to me like you got it. It made you pull out big phrases like Syllogistic Fallacy thinking I might cower to your intellectual genius.
Cruelty is cruelty, Professor.
I can compare one cruel act to another cruel act.
I can and I did.
Period.
I know some people who are opposed to horse racing, but suffice it to say that “Racing” and “Pulling a Cart” is not the same as making animals kill, maim, or tear each other apart with their teeth for people’s enjoyment, Einstein. The fact that you cannot tell the difference between the two speaks volumes about your mental inadequacies.
And, yes, I advocate for people to stop the “Abuse of horses and the equine species” too? I am against abuse to all animals.
In conclusion, if you are going to go to the trouble to use big words in an attempt to position yourself intellectually superior to someone who you disagree with, learn how to construct a sentence properly. Your big words are nullified by your third grade grammar.
Exeunt.
Having read the script I must say this choice is not so bad. Chris Tucker? Please, no… Idris Elbra, great actor but totally don’t see him in it. Foxx passes, but he has to drop some weight. Michael K Williams would be awesome or some unknown. They could go with unknown since the scene stealers are Calvin and Schultz.
I don’t really see DiCaprio as Calvin. It will be either Oscar performance or total flop. When I read the script I envisioned a younger Harvey Keitel, Keith Carradine would be great.
Omar, Omar, Omar!!!
Would have loved to see Anthony Mackie get this, he deserves a big role. Instead when it comes to black actors Hollywood always goes with the same 4-5 name list. It’s getting old…
