Universal and director Tom Hooper want Hugh Jackman for the role of Jean Valjean in Les Miserables. So who might stalk him in the role of Javert? I’m told that Paul Bettany is a candidate and that he read for the role and sang the songs from the Cameron Mackintosh-produced stage hit. Mackintosh is producing the film with Working Title partners Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, and Bill Nicholson has written the script. The intention is to begin production before year’s end, somewhere in Europe. Let’s see if this goes anywhere.

Horrible casting — Paul Bettany? Really? Mr. Gangster No. 1? My goodness. Please no.
Have You seen Master and Commander? Or Wimbledon? PB is quite versatile actor
Cant they get Philip Quast? He was/is so awesome in all the stage productions. Truly amazing voice…He is Javert. And Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean?? Eh…cant really see it but I could deal. Just not Paul Bettany. Please
I’m pretty sure Philip Quast looks a lot different now. The 10th anniversary concert was about fifteen years ago. Of course he’s still a fabulous singer, but he doesn’t look like he did in the TAC. I absolutely love him to (I agree – he IS Javert!). But, I don’t think he’d work in the movie.
Plus people, you have to admit, Les Mis is definitely going to need a bit of talented Hollywood star power to get the general (non-Les-Mis-familiar) public to go see it. Let’s just hope that Hollywood can sing.
Philip Quast is NOT Javert! Bite your tongue.
Javert will forever be Chuck Wagner. Period.
He should play him in the movie.
Musicals are great when you have people with phenomenal voices singing them. Not when you have Carnival Cruise quality singers trying their best to sound good with the help of creative audio engineering.
Actually some Carnival Cruise singers would probably do a better job vocally.
Aside from that, Valjean is a tenor or bari-tenor role which Jackman is not, he’s baritone, and this is an important thing considering the contrast he’s supposed to have with Javert’s voice range when they sing together.
I can’t sit through another Sweeney Todd-type bastardization of a quality musical.
If Jackman is a baritone, he fakes tenor really well — as seen when he played the role of Curley in Oklahoma! :)
I predict this film will cost at least $80 mil, garner 10 Oscar noms and top out at $45 mil at the North American Box-Office.
Success!
I am okay with Hugh being Jean ValJean, I could see it I think he would be great with the part.
But Paul Bettany, really.. Come on Tom Hooper, I know your better than that.
Then again, All of the things he has done, has had actors I would not expect doing a good job, doing a really good job (Helena Bonham Carter, in Kings Speech being one).
So can I hold out some hope that samantha Barks, will be in the movie.
Philip Quast would be fantastic. The definitive Javert. I’d also like Benedict Cumberbatch in the role.
“the intention is to begin production before year’s end”
Jackman is shooting the Wolverine sequel in the fall…just saying.
I hope it won’t fell through due to the standard scheduling conflicts, because he is perfect for this role : he has that unique quality, he can be convincing as a rugged, rough ex-con AND a gentleman, as well, and whoever plays Valjean, HAS TO possess that quality…plus he IS a Tony award-winning musical actor so he pretty much has the qualifications this job requires…
I agree: to all the haters, Hugh will be terrific! Also, I think Russel Crowe has the role of Javert now…
Not feeling Bettany in this role, to be honest. And if they’re going to cast someone who is not really a singer, than I’d much rather they cast someone like Geoffrey Rush for Javert – especially since he already played the role BRILLIANTLY in a live-action Les Miserables movie in the 90’s. Though, he probably won’t want to play the role again for that reason, but man… if he did, it would be amazing to see him spar with Jackman on screen.
Why the hate for Paul Bettany? He’s a terrific actor and a fine screen presence
Hugh jackman. Sweet but alfie boe should b back as Jean valjean
I love Alfie! Hugh will be great but Alfie is so awesome! My fav opera singer!
Ugh… the Broadway purists are at it again. Cast a Hollywood personality instead of the original theater cast and the whining begins.
Face it, folks – No one except the purists would care to see no-names in a movie version. And it’s just that a MOVIE version. If you want your precious theatrical cast, dont go see it – listen to your Cast Recording instead.
I love the way this cast is shaping up.
They should cast Gerard Butler (aka The Phantom of the Opera), he has the right vocal range and physically he is perfect for the role.
Gerard Butler should never be allowed to sing again after the way he crucified the songs in Phantom.
I’m fine with Hugh Jackman as Valjean, but not Bettany as Javert. It needs a man of presence and depth and singing skill. Not a pretty boy.
It’s funny, I immediately thought of Geoffrey Rush as well for the role, but don’t know if he can sing. Alan Rickman was another thought but don’t need to turn this into Sweeney pt. 2.
And bizarrely, I just finished rewatching Ultraviolet last night with Philip Quast – had no idea he was a musical theatre performer! But agree that it needs a bigger marquee name to match Jackman.
Jackman and Butler – like them both. Could be very intense.
I like Gerard for the role, too– someone should definitely be throwing his name around!
I don’t know if he’s got the singing chops, but Paul Giamatti would make an amazing Javert.
What about Ewan McGregor for Javert ? He has a great voice and can pretty much play anything, he could definitely nail this baity villain-role.
How many times are they going to remake this? The best version was the one with Fredrich March. Leave it alone PLEASE!!
What do you mean remake? This will be the musical adaptation. None of the previous Les Miserables have been this way.
If we are throwing names out there then why not Liam Neeson? He’s got good presence for Javert, and as for singing, they autotuned the crap out of R Dawson’s Mimi I’m sure they could do the same for anyone else.
I’d rather see an actor first, singer second if it’s a film adaptation; tone is pretty much the only important thing for film singing, as key/pitch, volume, etc can be fixed.
Probably because he was in the last Les Miserables adaptation. :/
Paul Bettany would be an amazing Javert! He has the right charisma and presence!
I read somewhere he used to sing when he was younger, so he should be able to pull it off!
It’s been awhile since I even thought about this. They both sound right to me. I think Paul Bettany is a better actor than he is getting credit for here. What I was thinking, was Eponine being played by Amy Lee of Evanescence, and for Gavroche, Chester Bennington from Linkin Park. Rock this thing up and maybe you’ll have something. Some talented Goth Rock singers is just what this needs IMO.
I would like to see Johnny Knoxville as Valjean but play it as an adult with special needs a la Ringer. Also Danny McBride or Adam Sandler would be perfect for Jalvert. Todd Phillips can direct and Ana Faris needs to be in it. Oh and Topher Grace or Michael Cera. You’re welcome.
Also in this version Valjean would eventually be caught by Spider-Man and the final song is written by….wait for it…Bono!!!!Brilliant!!!
Would love to see Many Patinkin in this.
Me too! Love him!
Paul is not known for his singing, but he did make a career of it, busking in his younger days. I have an old recording of him and he’s quite good. Also plays a mean guitar.
I think Hugh Jackman is a great choice. Likewise Paul Bettany (assuming he can sing the role and has a deep enough baritone). Ewan Macgregor would be terrible (did you see him in Guys & Dolls!). It does need someone who is quite big in Hollywood though rather than Philip Quast, Alfie Boe, …
I like the idea of Helena Bonham Carter as Madame Thenardier though. Lea Michelle for Eponine though please…
Sean P. Diddy Combs as Javert!! Patti Labelle as Madame Theardier. Vanessa Williams as Fantine!! Jennifer Hudson as Cosette!!
