EXCLUSIVE: Amy Adams has formally been set to star in Paul Thomas Anderson’s untitled film, which begins production later this month. She will play the wife of the character played by Philip Seymour Hoffman. He plays a man who returns from witnessing the horrors of WWII, and in an attempt to find himself, he forms a belief system that catches on in the 1950s. Deadline revealed in early May that Adams was being courted. Joaquin Phoenix has also been set to play the faith leader’s right-hand man, and I’ve heard there have been conversations with The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo‘s Lena Endre and Laura Dern for other roles. The Weinstein Company acquired worldwide distribution rights to the film last month just before the Cannes Film Festival. Megan Ellison is producing through her Annapurna Productions banner, along with JoAnne Sellar and Daniel Lupi, with Ted Schipper exec producing.
Adams is coming off her Oscar-nominated turn in The Fighter, and she will do this film before starting production on Man of Steel, playing Lois Lane in the Zack Snyder-directed Superman franchise reboot. Adams will next be seen in the Walter Salles-directed On The Road, which is being shopped for domestic distribution, and Disney’s Muppets. She’s repped by Brillstein Entertainment Partners and WME.

I can’t wait to see PTA’s Scientology movie!
With Verne Troyer as Tom cruise
You mean the movie about scientology
Shhhhh, don’t tell anyone, they’ve already tried to squash the film by having talent pull out. Them’s some powerful aliens.
God, I’m drooling with anticipation for this. TWBB was the best movie of the last decade. I honestly thought it matched classic 70s movies like the first two Godfather pictures and Chinatown in terms of quality.
“He plays a man who returns from witnessing the horrors of WWII, and in an attempt to find himself, he forms a belief system that catches on in the 1950s.”
Wow, really?
It’s a Scientology film. Why, Amy? Why?
I’m guessing it has more to do with Paul Thomas Anderson. But that’s just a guess.
Amy taking food outta Reese’s mouth.
Reese is over. Amy is way better.
Reese is over. This isn’t 1999 anymore.
I’d been looking forward to seeing Reese in a PTA film.
Oh no, really? Does she have to be in everything right now? She is okay but has very little sex appeal and that chipmunk voice is worse than Freddy Krueger’s nails on a chalkboard. Muppets, Superman, PTA?! Give me a break… (obviously) count me as disappointed about this decision.
I have to agree.
completely disagree.
totally disagree with you, “true dat”.
since you brought it up…. Amy Adams is CRAZY sexy. VERY sexy.
I think Amy Adams is totally sexy. As do tons of people I think.
Look. I’m not a Scientologist. I love esoteric philosophy. I love film. And I love me some PTA.
This film is NOT about L. Ron Hubbard. Therefore, NOT about Scientology.
If you do a little reading, a little research… in 10min, you’d suddenly become informed, know what you were talking all talking about, and realize (given the synopsis), this film is not about Scientology.
but if you spend 10 mins reading the first draft of the screenplay (and I think the part about ‘greatly overhauling the script’ is just misdirection, you’ll realize it definitely IS about L. Ron Hubbard.
Amy Adams joining? Makes me even more excited for this film! Great cast, and you can always count on PTA!
Amy Adams is super sexy, and this film does not appear to be about Scientology, and Scientology rocks. Any one that says otherwise does not like girls and has not studied the religion, which is about self empowerment.
yeah, if by “self-empowerment” you mean “dolla dolla bills, y’all.”
This movie will be brilliant. What PTA is attempting to do with this — as he did with THERE WILL BE BLOOD — is examine an extremely timely and profoundly relevant subject in a way that is not on the nose. All the power to him. He’s the best filmmaker working right now. Hands down.
