EXCLUSIVE: This is going to gobsmack almost everyone in Hollywood. Not only did Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh just choose 21-year-old newcomer Alex Pettyfer for this juicy role in Magic Mike. But also, as Deadline has previously reported, the film has such an interesting storyline because the plot revolves around Channing Tatum’s real-life stripper sojourn. Now Pettyfer will play a young Tatum baring it all while Channing plays his older mentor. Pettyfer recently starred in I Am Number Four and Beastly, and will appear this fall opposite Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried for New Regency in a film that was called Now, and just changed its name today to In Time.
Soderbergh’s Magic Mike is the story of a friendship set in the world of male strippers. Tatum plays the title character, who schools a young dancer (Pettyfer) in how to hustle on and off the stage. It’s a wild summer of dancing, partying, and women. The inspiration was Channing’s own experiences as a stripper when he was 19. With Tatum, Nick Wechsler is producing with Gregory Jacobs and Reid Carolin who is writing the script. Soderbergh has called the film “sexy, funny and shocking” using Saturday Night Fever as a model.

The powers that be call it ‘brave’. When a male actor gets naked it’s gross and funny. Double standard much or too many insecure men in the world? Women make up over 50% of the movie going audience, our interests are important too. We don’t find good looking naked men either gross or funny.

I think Channing Tatum is terrible actor, seriously, he is not good. BUT, as I’ve talked to some people who have interacted with the guy, they say he truly is a hard worker, and I can respect that, but still think he needs to get better. Somehow I still feel some hope for the guy. Hopefully Soderbergh can get somewhat of a decent performance out of him especially since the topic they’re covering here doesn’t necessarily scream great acting

Probably the WORST most TASTELESS idea I’ve heard come out Hollywood in a bit. So, what’s the movie message??? Become a stripper, degrade your body for money, have lots of meaningless sex and end up a successful Hollywood actor like Tatum? Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

If it was a story about a female stripper (or even porn star) who became famous, would anyone be saying it’s gross and degrading? No, because women are always seen as beneath men so a woman being a stripper is fine but a man being on is shocking. Sexism. Figures!

Um, actually that was a movie called showgirls. Which is considered one of the worst movies of all time. I totally agree with your argument about the inherent sexism in Hollywood, but I wanted to point out that this plot was done with a woman first, and it was pretty much universally panned.
this looks like a horrible package (pun intended) except, Soderbergh’s involvement means this could be good in the way Boogie Nights was good, ie bringing class to a dirty subject. Except, Pettyfer and Taintum are atrocious actors. But hey, we all thought Marky Mark couldn’t act, then came Boogie Nights. And at best, Soderbergh will use their poor performances in a way that works.
I am collecting Alex Pettyfer movies since “Stormbreaker” and “Tom Brown’s Schooldays”.
I have to admit that I’d rather see him as Jace Wayland in “City of Bones” (The Mortal Instruments) and I still hope he’ll play in that movie.
But why shouldn’t he do something different? It’s better than having another 10th remake of any old movie !
I guess I’ll see that movie on the Big Screen, and of course I’ll get the DVD (otherwise my collection would be incomplete).

Yes I have seen the movie, but I guess you watched a different version ? Actually I was in the cinema today (I had to go to an other city by train since that movie isn’t in the cinema program in my city any more).
But I didn’t watch “Ia#4” for the first time today, it was my 25th cinematic screening of that movie I had today !

This has 54 written all over it – as in, this will bomb just like the Mike Meyers mentoring Ryan Phillippe film, just in case you forgot about it since it stunk, was a clear BOOGIE NIGHTS wannabe, and was utterly forgettable.

I wondered for a minute if this was a late-posted April Fool. This sounds tasteless and would need actors with charm and appeal, so it’s a definite strikeout with these two aboard.
On the positive side, it’s fun that Pettyfer’s actually gotten another job, because we’ll get to hear more stories about his nightmare behavior from the cast and crew.
What is HILARIOUS is one of the erroneous things in Pettyfer’s wikipedia is that he and Channing are friends through their moms. I guess they will meet now. I guess this means Pettyfer is not doing mortal instruments?
