New Showtime entertainment president David Nevins is going 2-for-2 in his first development season at the pay cable network, picking up both pilots he ordered — drama Homeland and comedy House of Lies — to series. Both have received 12-episode orders and will start production in the summer. Thriller Homeland, from 24 showrunner Howard Gordon, stars Claire Danes, Damian Lewis and Emmy and Mandy Patinkin, while management consulting comedy House of Lies is toplined by Don Cheadle and Kristen Bell. “Homeland and House of Lies are audacious in both their concept and their casting,” Nevins said. “They build upon the network’s successful pedigree and expand the definition of what a Showtime series can be.
Homeland, produced by Fox 21, is based on Gideon Raff’s Israeli series Prisoners of War. Written by Gordon, Raff and Alex Gansa, it tells the story of Carrie Anderson (Danes), a CIA officer battling her own demons who becomes convinced that the intelligence that led to the rescue of Scott Brody (Lewis), a U.S. soldier who had been missing and presumed deal for nine years, was a setup and may be connected to an Al-Qaeda plot to be carried out on American soil. Mandy Patinkin plays Saul, a veteran CIA Division Chief who is Carrie’s boss and mentor.
House of Lies, written and executive produced by Matthew Carnahan, was based on the tell-all book House of Lies: How Management Consultants Steal Your Watch and Tell You the Time by Martin Kihn. Cheadle stars as Marty, a highly successful and cutthroat consultant who is never above using any means (or anyone) necessary to get his way with and for his clients. Bell plasy Jeannie Van Der Hooven, a razor-sharp Ivy League graduate who works at Marty’s firm. Co-stars include comedian Ben Schwartz and Josh Lawson as well as Dawn Oliveri, Glynn Turman and Donis Leonard Jr. Also executive producing are Jessika Borsiczky and Stephen Hopkins, who directed the pilot.

With Nurse Jackie and Tara tanking, they need these new shows desperately.
Go Don Cheadle! It’s about time brotha gets the lead in something… and don’t mention Hotel Rowanda, you know what I mean. It all sounds promising… and then… Kristen Bell as a “razor-sharp Ivy league graduate”…. hmmm. Choking on my snark as it fights to rise out of my throat and barf out on my keyboard.
THey both sound promising. Looks like Nevins is keeping Showtime on track.
It’ll be interesting to see how many episodes Patinkin completes before quitting.
Homeland sounds good. Let’s hope Mandy doesn’t freak out and leave the show.
its a great script
He will. He can’t help it.
This looks like the start to a great ABC fall lineup. Maybe there’s an emasculated dad show in the works too.
Kristen Bell is BACK, baby! This made my day.
Also, dear cast of Homeland,
You do know you’ve hired a flake deluxe who has commitment issues, i.e. Mandy Patinkin, right? Hope he doesn’t burn you like he did us.
Sincerely,
The cast of Criminal Minds.
Please lemme know how I can sign up for one of these non-writing EP jobs…
Sitting back and watching everyone else do all the heavy lifiting… and getting 40K an episode for it… I think I could do that.
Sounds like someone either has a personal grudge, or doesn’t know what a non-writing EP does…
No grudge. But I’ve worked on a number of series and am always baffled by the non-writing EP’s actual job.
Yes, the staff does make fun of you when you pitch ideas. Yes, we don’t respect you. Yes, we know you fucked to get where you’re at. No, we don’t want you bringing us any new projects that we’ll just end up doing all the work on.
Ha! I think I know who you are and who you are referring to. All the best to you!
And I’m a staff writer baffled by the three different EPs with whom I’ve worked making $50K+ an episode for recycling their 80s-90s crap storylines, tanking new shows and getting hired again. Each show would probably still be on the air – they were all bubble shows – if a non-writing EP who actually cared about producing quality had been involved. Wilting Blue Tulip and Master Blaster… are you two of my failed EPs?! – if so, thanks for not caring and killing opportunity. Please step aside for a real producer. Producing a show means more than sitting in a room contemplating what you want for lunch. Not one of the three EPs could even name one department head… they all give TV a bad name.
Amen, brother.
That’s okay, Staff Writer: You—like 87% of all other working Hollywood writers—probably suck, anyway. Doubtful you bring anything to the table apart from your peer-approved mediocrity.
Oh yeah, Kristen Bell back on TV! Looking forward to seeing that girl doing something ( that will hopefully be ) worthy of her talent. Ever since Veronica Mars she’s only been doing horrible movies.
I’ve heard more about Fox 21 in the last 6 months than I have in the last 6 years. WTF?
How does Mandy Patinkin keep getting work?
Who is Jessika Borsiczky?
@just wondering,
jessiika borsiczky is an executive producer on House of Lies
