How does this compare with NBC’s Prime Suspect script? I actually read that the Prime Suspect rewrite was pretty good by Alexandra Cunningham.

Just finished watching Forbrydelsen all 20 hrs. Interested to see how this stacks up. The Danish series was great and didn’t need a remake. It aired on the BBC with subtitles. Guess US audiences only appreciate their take on Scandinavian TV or films. All that reading must turn them off.
Reading? Reading is so 1900’s. We Americans only enjoy it if we can add explosions and car chases. And cast it with pretty people.
BTW… Is it just me or is John Murphy getting a lot of miles out of that Sunshine score?

So it’s basically an episode of LAW & ORDER spread out to a whole series. Or a rehash of TWIN PEAKS.

It’s a knockoff of John Murhpy’s Sunshine. The original version has also been used in Kick Ass.
This version had some different changes, but was clearly a knock off. I’m betting the Murphy version was used as temp for the edit.
Definitely agree with you on the Twin Peaks vibe: first, the Pacific Northwest setting…and then the whole ‘Who killed Rosie Tyler?’ thing.
At least it’s a LIMITED series. Peaks should’ve been a mini :(

I was impressed by it. Great cinematography, and it looks like a lot of emotions. Much better than most of what’s on TV. Surprised AMC identified itself as the network of Walking Dead and Mad Men, but not Breaking Bad. FYI, this is not meant as a limited series, but a continuous, season-to-season series (according to the AMC site). Given AMC’s track record, I don’t understand all the negative comments. Did some of you eat too much candy last night?
Looks great. Veena Sud was a solid writer/producer on Cold Case. I’m glad she’s getting a chance to branch out into cable and serialized storytelling. I’m sure this will be another hit for AMC.
“The Killing”, another movie about a…killing!
Not enough movies about killings!
Cause I don’t know about you, but there just doesn’t seem to be enough killings in the world-or on TV or film-to fulfill our cultural daily killing quota.
And as a bonus, the victim in “The Killing” is a young girl! Sure to get the 14-35 male demo salivating.
“Young girls in extremis” always packs ’em into the seats.
“The Killing” was written & produced because men enjoy seeing women-even better, pretty young girls- scream and run for their lives. All the other Law & Order script shit filler is just icing on the violence-against-women cake.
I have seen the final five minutes (well, a bit under five minutes) of the first episode of the remake. Incredibly moving. It was even more effective than the comparable scene in the Danish original. “What happens” in the scene is directly copied from the Danish original, yet the way the US scene was filmed, the acting, just took it up a notch.
I can understand that some people have felt burned by bad US remakes of foreign shows in the past, and thus view this new remake with skepticism, but trust me, this is one remake that has been done right (at least on the evidence of what I have seen).
Hey, KJ, what did Edgar Allen Poe say is the theme of ALL great literature? The death of a beautiful woman. It resonates emotionally because it is a tragedy, not because anybody thinks “Good, another woman is dead.” So shut the hell up.
“More tears”, Poe’s just plain dumb if that’s his idea of what inspires “ALL great literature”. Surely YOU don’t buy this nonsense, do you?

My point that obviously eluded you: Everyone knows that the death of a young woman is tragic.
The REAL question is: WHY make another movie featuring the tragic murder of yet another young woman?
The motives of the writer, producer, and AMC are clear: Make money off a murder mystery of a young girl. Indefensible, for certain, but clear and not very original.
However, the motives of the 14-40 male demo who tune in to “The Killing” are far murkier and rarely exposed to the light of day.
Why REALLY motivates males 14-40 who enjoy watching women in trouble-the younger, the better, such as in “The Killing”?
Answer: Their evident-though subconscious-lust for watching terrified women.
AMC & the producers of the original Danish show added the “murder mystery” plotline to elevate “The Killing” from your garden variety young-woman slasher film.
Twin Peaks did the same thing & found a cult following around the murder mystery of a young woman. Plus, they had cherry pie, dancing dwarfs, and S. Fenn playing schoolgirls gone bad.
You know what, maybe Poe was half right.
The death of a beautiful woman surely isn’t the driving force of all great literature.
But it sure as hell may be the driving force behind most of Hollywood’s TV & movie murder mysteries.
i agree with all the positive statements here. While i don’t like the rebooting trend, that doesn’t mean they’re all bad. And we tend to fare better with foreign stuff than our own, because we’re usually ripping from a good source. The American remake, “Let Me In,” is a good example. AMC has created a phenomenally strong brand. I hope this joins.
What’s up with the “from the producers of cold case” is that something to really brag about.
