Ice Cube is negotiating to join Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum in 21 Jump Street. He is also preparing to shop Chrome and Paint, a gritty Boyz N’ The Hood-style drama that Cube wrote with Eva Vives as a starring and directing vehicle that focuses on custom car culture of South Central Los Angeles. In 21 Jump Street, Cube will play the precinct captain role originated by Steven Williams in the TV series that launched the career of Johnny Depp. Phil Lord and Chris Miller are directing the pic for Sony Pictures. Cube livens up the cast, but if they are planning to replicate the series plot about undercover cops that infiltrate schools, I’m still waiting to see if they cast anybody that remotely looks like they might be proofed in a bar. Depp was a baby-faced 24 when he started the series: Tatum is 30 and Hill is 27. Shooting begins in late April and Neal Moritz is producing.
Cube will jump into that film after he finishes a role in the New Line romancer New Year’s Eve, matched with Hilary Swank. Cube, who directed the 2010 Oakland Raiders documentary Straight Outta L.A. for ESPN, hasn’t directed a narrative feature since 1998’s The Players Club, which he also wrote. In Chrome and Paint, Cube uses the subculture of tricked out Mercedes, BMW and Low Rider cars to frame a drama about the temptation to place materialism above all else. Cube’s hope is to have his agents at UTA and manager Jeff Kwatinetz set up the project within the next two weeks and shoot in late summer. He’s producing the project with Cube Vision partner Matt Alvarez. Cube and Alvarez are also moving on two projects at New Line: Cube and David O Russell will hire a writer shortly to craft an R-rated Dirty Harry-esque crime film that will team director and star for the first time since Three Kings; and Cube Vision is also producing Straight Outta Compton. World Trade Center’s Andrea Berloff is scripting a biopic of NWA, the politically charged hip-hop group that reflected the growing ire of urban youth in the 1980s and set the tone for gangsta Los Angeles rap culture.

How will these projects effect Are We There Yet 3? Anyone else think Cube is right for the next installment of Daddy Day Care? He could do it with Cuba Gooding Jr. and it could be an unofficial sequel to Boyz in the Hood.
Cube’s turn at directing was ridiculous — instead of making a sports doc (like he was paid to do) about the Raiders, he made a film about NWA and talked about Raiders clothing. It was ridiculous.
Worst 30 For 30 ever made.
NWA sucked… get over it Boy-O.
I guess that why the 30 for 30 opened Tribeca Film Festival. I guess they really know how to pick ’em. I guess now they suck and we should get over it.
There’s been a lot on writers on that NWA movie already. Leigh Savidge, Alan Wenkus, Andrea Berloff.. It’s been on IMDB as in development for years. With all the in-fighting between Dre and Cube and the rest of the group it may never get made..
Jonah Hill? Ha ha ha ha ha! Nobody is interested in seeing Jonah Hill in a film anymore.
Why is it that Hollywood is the last to know when a trend is over?
Was anyone every interested? Seems like he always slipped through the cracks by being coupled/packaged with more appealing actors/comics.
I like Jonah Hill.
Me too! Jonah and Cube should make for a funny movie.
Superbad
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Cyrus
Get him to the Greek
Knocked up
Everyone who saw those films?
Michael Cera & written by Seth Rogen
Jason Segel
Not many saw it, but duh, John C. Reilly
Russell Brand’s ‘Aldous Snow’
Seth Rogen/Apatow gang
Come on. He was not even close to being the lead in some of those.
Didn’t know Jonah was a “trend”. Regardless, a few people thought he was bankable and still think so. Why not have Cube in there to spice things up?
I really hope this movie does as well as The Mod Squad, The A-Team and [insert name of movie remake of a TV show THAT NO ONE WAS ASKING TO BE MADE INTO A FILM].
Tick tick tick…
they are ALL TOO OLD for this show. I guess nobody show the TV show
Ice Cube’s perfect for that role. It’s a funny script but Ice Cube will surely bring it to a whole other level – the guy’ll brings such charm and attitude to a role like this. It’s so good to see that he’s back into the acting game and doing so with a vengenance now. Chrome and Paint sounds like a perfect vehicle for him too – sounds better than the one that Grazer’s working with that RAVEN director.
MAN! Finally…a new Boyz N’ the Hood movie!! I can’t be mad at Cube’s hustle. He’s killing it on all fronts, TV, movies, music, etc. What’s next?
Finally!!! A new Boyz N the Hood! Im not mad at Cube’s hustle! He’s killing it on all fronts…TV, movies, music, etc. What’s next? say what you will but I love it
Funny People sucked so hard.
How about they scrap Jonah Hill and instead of making this a movie, they keep it as a TV show? A “21 Jump Street” reboot populated with good looking TV stars would have at least a 3-4 season lifespan on The CW. This movie is destined to top out at 70 million domestic. Make no money overseas. And never see a sequel. Just make it into a TV show. And get rid of Jonah Hill’s Dr. Robotnik looking self.
Agreed. It is a good concept for television. Just not a movie franchise. And the old show was very entertaining. Caught some episodes on Hulu recently.
A new TV show (like Battlestar Galactica) would be really cool, and the CW would be perfect. Maybe if the film is a success they may consider it.
Unless Cube is playing the Police Captain, I don’t believe him as a teenager at all. He looked well into his 30s in “Boyz N’ the Hood.” Same goes for Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. This movie looks to be an epic fail.
Trend? Wow…i didn’t know actors are “trends”, but I digress. Yeah, I think he is playing the captain. Maybe it will work. We shall see.
Read the post! Cube IS playing the captain!!
Domino, motherfucker!
Ice Cube is back, he’s bad, he’s black, he’s mad! He’s so right for the police captain! I was uncertain about this project but with him involved, I’m not back on track w/ wanting to see it!
I love me some Ice Cube. But I wonder if this is an instance of Cube Vision getting, er, a bit hazy?
Jump! Down on Jump Street! Oh those lyrics were so good.
I want to see Johnny Depp in this movie and nobody else.
He should do it just for the goofy fun he could have playing the same character 25 years later.
what an awful idea. loser, this is a total loser…….21 jump street was johnny depp and his hair, nothing more. a great idea at the time, just old and tired now…a tv series maybe, a feature….yawn….
The more I hear about the “21 Jump Street” reboot, the worse it gets. WHY are they letting Jonah Hill anywhere near this property? As others have said, this is a perfect premise to be rebooted into a WB teen show. It’s a waste to let these Frat Pack dregs trash it.
“The more you hear about it”? I guess you haven’t heard anything, then, because it’s ALWAYS been a Jonah Hill vehicle since it was announced.
I think everyone needs to chill out and wait to see what Lord & Miller do with the property. So far, in all the projects they’ve been involved in, they’ve taken something that seems eh and spun it into gold. Clone High, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, How I Met Your Mother — all weird ideas that turned out awesome. SO until they make something shitty, I’m betting on them.
A long time ago, somewhere around 2003, there were talks about a 21 Jump Street movie.
It is not a “reboot”. People are getting far too flirtatious by that word. It is a remake. For it to be a reboot there would have to have been a movie franchise before it to ‘reboot’.
You can’t spell Jumpstreet without GRIECO…
“Andrea Berloff is scripting a biopic of NWA”…is this a joke? What does a middle aged white lady know about being a Ni$$a Wit an Attitude? Hollywood is silly.
All of you hacks think you can safely insult Jonah Hill because he is funny and fat, but in the end you all just live in your apartments and never work.
what’s up, Jonah?
All I ask for is a cameo by Depp, Peete, DeLuise and/or Nguyen. Grieco can cameo as a drug dealer.
Loved this show as a kid. Cube is a very smart addition to the cast.
