EXCLUSIVE: Grey’s Anatomy alum Jeffrey Dean Morgan is in final negotiations to play the lead in Starz’s upcoming 10-episode drama series Magic City. Set in Miami in the late 1950s-early 1960s, Magic City chronicles the collision of mobsters, politicians and entertainers at the first preeminent Miami hotel just as Fidel Castro takes control of Cuba and shuts down Havana as a gambling haven. It centers on a suave Jewish-American man (Morgan) who builds the hotel and along the way makes some strange bedfellows and many powerful enemies. The series was created by Mitch Glazer who is executive producing it with Geyer Kosinski and Tony To. Production is slated to begin shortly in Miami for a 2012 premiere.
Morgan, who simultaneously recurred on Grey’s as heart transplant patient Denny Duquette who had a relationship with Izzie (Katherine Heigl), and on Supernatural as the mysterious father of Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Deal (Jensen Ackles), recently starred in the features Watchmen and The Losers. The actor, repped by UTA and Precision, has just signed to star in Lionsgate’s horror thriller Dibbuk Box produced by Sam Raimi and wrapped the indies The Fields and Peace, Love, & Misunderstanding.
I love the premise of the project, but try and tell me that this series wasn’t pitched as “Mad Men meets Boardwalk Empire”.
Think there might be a little bit of Glee in there, too. Haha.
True, but I mean when every drama comes from HBO the creators say something like “It’s Sopranos in the medieval” or Sons of Anarchy “Sopranos on bikes” etc.
If that show would sound as 1960 + people in office I would say “COME ON!”, but the premise actually sounds intriguing and if they will pour money in it they might have a hit. If it will come out as I imagine then it has a lot of potential.
who cares WHAT the pitch was – the show sounds great! And what’s wrong with a show that would be smart enough to combine ( my 2 favorite shows) Mad Men + Boardwalk Empire ? Count me way in!
Wow, the story seems so similar to a book I read “lucky 325”. The book was great with factual depiction of that era told by someone living that life, a side which tells us the reality of what went on those days. I really hope this is based like the book on facts not fiction as too many fictional movies have been made ignoring the human side of the people who had to live this kind of life.

“MAGIC CITY ” has a great storyline and these type of TV series have proven to have a big following.
At the time of the series takes place there was so much going on in the underworld and Everyone met up in Miami Florida at one time or another to escape in the back in the day tropics & yet feel protected still on US soil Great stuff going on here. The series will be another Hit and have great multi season strength with many Headline stories to tell.
I cant wait to see some of my dear friends & acting associates make another award wining TV series.
I am looking forword to a great First and second season.
