This has to be the highest-profile effort to bring Wonder Woman to television: One of TV’s best-known creators, The Practice‘s David E. Kelley, has come on board to write and produce a new series project about the female superhero. The project, from Warner Bros Television where Kelley is based, and Warner Bros’ DC Entertainment, will be taken out to the networks shortly. Kelley, who has
created several female centered shows like Ally McBeal, has wanted to tackle a contemporary take on the World War II-era Amazon. He recently met with the DC team who also have been looking for ways to launch a new Wonder Woman TV franchise.
The comic book Wonder Woman character has evolved significantly since she first appeared in a 1941 issue of All Star Comics and recently underwent a controversial makeover. Details on Kelley’s TV series are being kept under wraps, and it is not clear if the new Wonder Woman aka Diana Prince will be the old familiar Wonder Woman or the redesigned reboot announced with great fanfare this year by DC Comics Co-Publisher Jim Lee that looks like she’s ready for Goth Day at the Galleria. (DC Comics Has Ruined Wonder Woman!) Or whether she’ll keep her signature powers and weapons, including her Lasso of Truth, her indestructible bracelets, her tiara and her invisible airplane.
Wonder Woman has presented a challenge both for feature and TV creators. That’s probably because she is the most famous female superhero in the testosterone-dominated comic world. And because she also is a big feminist icon. The most successful screen adaptation of the Wonder Woman comic books was the TV series The New Adventures of Wonder Woman starring Lynda Carter in the title role, which aired from 1975-1979, first on ABC and then on CBS. Carter has since become synonymous with the character. That will certainly present a challenge in casting the role if the project goes to pilot.
On the feature side, a Wonder Woman film has been in development hell for a decade at Warner Bros, with Joss Whedon at one point attached to write and direct for producer Joel Silver. In May, Warner chairman and CEO Barry Meyer confirmed that a new Wonder Woman feature is in development. There has been a concerted effort on part of Time Warner lately to better mine the DC properties across different platforms. The film division is expected to announce a slate of DC movies by the end of the year that would probably include Wonder Woman.
Recent Comments
Warner Bros TV has brought DC characters to the small screen before: most recently with the CW’s Superman-themed Smallville, which is in its 10th and final season, and Fox’s Human Target, which returned for a second season. A notable recent effort to launch a new Wonder Woman series came a decade ago with Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman creator Deborah Joy LeVine as the writer.

Please, Lord, no industry skrags as WW. No Snooki.
Please, Lord, no bolt on 21st century implants, anorexia, lip injections, ‘attitude’ – Lynda Carter is memorable because she played her virtuous part totally, with no ‘winking’ – and no updated failure of a uniform. Spend lots of money on effects and bras.
Guys you will never do better than Lynda Carter .
Lynda Carter left some big shoes to fill.
shoes?
dear wb
will you came back wonder woman pl
becuse IM A BIG FAN OF WONDER WOMAN WILL YOU DO THAT FOR ME
SHE IS MY CHILDHOOD SUPERHERO PL
FROM ARNOLD
here here , me to i,m one of the biggest fans and cant wait to see ww back on tv where she belongs , ps hurry up and bring it back to tv
& the boustier’.
What was so special about Lynda Carter?
In that day, the hot chicks on TV were Lynda Carter, Farrah Fawcett, Catherine Bach (Daisy Duke)
I was in my teens and early twentys in the 70’s and WW wasn’t watched by anyone I knew. Way too wholesome and bland for my tastes. Lynda Carter? As far as I knew, she didn’t have a vagina. So there you go, here’s hoping they get someone with a vagina this time.
Stop. Look.
What isn’t special about Lynda Carter?
“Lynda Carter? As far as I knew, she didn’t have a vagina.”
You must be a total asshole for saying that
You must be blind
Look at that body?
Those blue eyes?
I was 13 when WW hit the TV screens & she was my fantasy at the time. She still looks good for her age.
She can tie me with her golden lasso & make me tell truth anyday.
Been waiting for remake of this Hero for decades.
Come on Hollywood lets get this moving.
“What was so special about Lynda Carter?”
i asked that question to my penis for 6 years.
AAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
She didn’t have silicone injected into her body.
If you have to ask, you are too young to have watched her!
She’s still beautiful, and they should, at the very least, have her playing Diana’s mother in the new series.
That’s like asking what is so special about Christopher Reeve and Superman. Both Lynda Carter and Christopher Reeve made Wonder Woman and Superman come to life. They made you believe that they actually were Wonder Woman and Superman. Brandon Routh gave Superman a good shot but the problem was a lousy story and the fact that it was tied into the Chris Reeve movies. The Chris Reeve movies (the first two in which Superman Returns tied into) were classics. I think it was hard to swallow the new cast playing the exact same roles that Chris and company did. Plus the storyline about Superman’s kid alsodidn’t work well.
She had class.
I agree. But Bridget Regan comes close.
http://nigelhalsey.deviantart.com/gallery/
Great Fanfare?! That is quite misleading actually. Her fans hate her new origin story. This NOT Wonder Woman.
The one and only Wonder Woman is Sarah Lancaster from NBC’s Chuck. you know Chuck’s sister. She looks like a young Linda Carter. No Megan Fox can even come close.
it’ll never work. never in a series and never in a movies. the bar is set way to high and a female hero would never be worthwhile. yea, i said it. not that this needs to be dragged on but anjelina jolie would be joke.
i agree-angelina is too anorexic
Talent? The Look? Likability? She’s got it all!
SARAH LANCASTER, David, she’s yr gal!
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0484178/
I have to ditto on this one. SARAH LANCASTER, David, she’s yr gal!
Sarah Lancaster’s nice. Another possibility… Catherine Bell (from JAG)??
Nadia Bjorlin (plays Chloe on Days of Our Lives).
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004294/
Katheryn Winnick is already a martial arts mistress.
http://www.maxim.com/girls/girls-of-maxim/83410/katherine-winnick.html#1
I wonder what she’d look like with black hair…
Catherine Bell from JAG??? WTF? That show is 15 years old and she’s 42 now…no princess.
Moron! Have you seen her lately? At 42 she’s still hotter than anything YOU’VE ever been on!…….
Sarah Lancaster would be perfect, and you would think she would have the time to do it, since her role on Chuck is so small, but maybe they should save her for the movie.
Hey how about casting Nancy Pelosi as Wonder Woman? I can picture her in the Lynda Carter outfit. She fits the bill in that she is ancient, knows what is best for us and here to save humanity. Come to think if it, didn’t we just by her a jet?
AAAAGHHHH!!!!! What a horrible image. Must BLEACH eyes now!
she could be ww’s evil and ancient twin…
At least she’ll be out of congress.
Given David E. Kelley’s far left proclivities, he might actually consider it. Although I find the idea of a new Wonder Woman series very interesting, I am a little bothered that it will be David E. Kelley producing it, as he seems completely incapable of making anything without turning it into a soapbox for his politics.
I just PUKED on my keyboard…..THANKS A HELL OF ALOT!!!
Has any one ever seen Confessions of a Superhero? The Hollywood Wonder Woman (actress Jennifer Wenger) would be 100% PERFECT for this!! She is a dead ringer and was born to play her. It would be a real Cinderella story. http://pro.imdb.com/name/nm2628854/
I saw her at comic con and she is gorgeous.
I second that! Jennifer Wenger is absolutely perfect for the role.
Jennifer Wenger is the ONLY Wonder Woman!
Excellent post. Hollywood is so out of touch with mainstream and waaay too willing to get all preachy on us. If a new WW wants to kick butt and bust bad guys, great. If she exists to lecture men and kum-ba-ya bad guys it’s gonna be a short series.
Not long ago an episode of Bones (repeat) happen to be on, all were in Halloween costumes. Emily Deschanel lead actress in the series could be a double for Lynda Carter. Emily went to the party as Wonder Woman.
Agree 100%!!! Emily would be THE best choice. Has the look, the body, and the athleticism.
Please no more women kicking ever one’s butt.
It’s getting so overwhelmingly silly and so “PC”.
Can we PLEASE have a normal, white, male, good guy who isn’t an emotionally-scarred, wimpy, momma’s-boy, neurotic bumbler?
How about Booth from Bones? Only a little emotionally scarred because he was a bad-ass soldier.
wtf? No more female lead shows because there aren’t enough shows about men? logic FAIL. Making a show about Wonder Woman(who was around 60 years ago and inspired every single ass kicking female since) does not have anything to do with the lack of solid male leads in shows today. And if you ask me, the reason why men are portrayed the way you described them, is because thats the way most men really are. Sorry to disappoint you.
a “normal white male”? please join the 21st century Emma.
Hey guys please do not mess this up like they did the new bionic woman, simply keep her innocence and smarts about her and she will be fine. Alos i beleive Linda Carters SHINE was the reason for the show doing so well, I think you will find the same look in Madeline Zima’s eyes you did Linda’s. Good Luck Mr. Kelley we are waiting……
I agree that Lynda Carter was amazing as Wonder Woman and yes, those are some big shoes to fill, however we all know that the show will be a huge success with Mr. Kelley behind the wheel. So, someone has to play the role and we need to give some “newbie” the chance. I don’t want to see some over paid and over played actress. Think outside the box… I think my ex-roommate from college should play this role! Check out her website.
Bridget Regan (from Legend of the Seeker) for Wonder Woman!!!!! She would be perfect!!!!
Thanks DC for Bastardising WW! Oh I’m sorry they call it “Re-inventing” The new show will flopp. It is quite sad that WB and DC cant seem to get there shit together. Its no wonder that Marvel is ahead of the game. Look at the ill fated “Birds of Prey” series that lasted only a couple of episodes. They get a hack of a writer and change the characters rediculously to where they are only recognisable by name only. R.I.P. WW. At least in this universe. DC nor WB seem to really care about what the fans think about there beloved character. It is no wonder also why this country trully sucks. I hope the family that owns Superman yanks the franchise away from DC.
Almost forgot. Her new origin is terrible. Why dont you just change Batman’s origin while your at it. You can make it so that young Bruce was raised by vampire bat type lesbians and get over with. Her costume?! It sucks to. Looks like a generic knockoff version of Rogues old costume. JMS obviouly has no creativity. And not to mention disrespectful to WW’s creator. You people are hack jobs. And should be ashamed of yourselves.
It’s enough!!!!!. We stand for Wonder Woman. We want a movie, a Tv series, We want her back. This is so diagusting selfish producers. We want to see something sublime of this character. Not a nasty woman, the Woman of truth and justice. Its time to bring her back. Its time!!!
This character is so lame. You will get disappointed when the fan boys don’t watch and it gets canceled. WW is as lame as the bionic woman.
THEY CANNOT USE THAT NEW HORRIBLE OUTFIT! Sry, i read those comics and let me just say, if they put that horrible outfit on her, i will not watch the show and i’m not the only one. they have destroyed the wonder woman i know and love beginning with that horrendous outfit. Just saying.
Angelina Jolie as Wonder woman. This will be a blockbuster movie if it happens. I would die if it happens!!
You’re going to die, eventually, even if it doesn’t happen.
You’re going to die too. Maybe before Anonymous does …
HAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHA.2
I want to die anonymously. HAHAHAHAHAHA.3. Ouch! (I twisted something.)
Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
No, they are saving her for a sci-fi hit… The Attack Of The Giant Lips
Which lips are you referring to?
Angelina Jolie ??? Realy?? She looked alot better in her Tomb Raider days. shes nothing great now… shes going down hill fast..
You are insane or blind. But, something wrong..You are def in the minority of thinkers
Angelina Jolie, are you kidding!
Why don’t you go outside and find a life for yourself that will be worth dying for instead of waiting for the next television show to come on.
If you like a bag of bones
If they couldn’t make it work as a movie, try for a tv series, eh boys?
The new Wonder Woman costume is terrible. The classic costume is part of the character – what makes her recognizable. If you put her in a black leather jacket, why bother buying the rights to Wonder Woman? Just write a show about some woman in a black jacket if you want to throw everything that’s unique out the window.
I must agree. Unfortunately we live in times where the leftist propaganda machines of the world have been very effective in teaching “hate America”. Having a red white and blue uniform doesn’t serve that purpose very well….not so much a conspiracy as a “movement”. Just the same Linda Carter was both HOT and virtuous, two qualities no longer valued – Hey, girls just want to have fun not be responsible because that’s not “fun”…..:-(
Since when did men like virtuous girls, part of teh reason girls are so “easy” now days is because men/boys and our society (run by men0 have taught girls they have to be sexy and give up their “virtue” to get a guy, which is a shame. But its a fact most guys will drop a girl unless hse “gives it up”.
You said “Get a guy” Interesting choice of words. Why are men & women even attracted to each other?
“Why are men and women even attracted to each other?” That’s a strange question.
Because it is natural; as in, the way it’s supposed to be.
Cinda, you’re so out of touch with today’s times, don’t think you have any idea what’s actually going on there because you’re clearly oblivious.
Sorry, Edwin J, ‘hot and virtuous’ is an oxymoron. Besides, how hot can a mannequin be?
Wonder Woman isn’t American, never has been. If you read the comics you would know that.
WW comes to America and comes to embody and fight for American Values.
If you read the comics from the forties on, you’d know that.
It doesn’t take a “Leftist Propaganda Machine” to hate Americans. Just watch Fox News, or read the comments to any news item about Obama on Yahoo or CNN, or even the comments on entertainment blogs like this one, to see how stupid you Neocon flag-wavers are, shoving your bullshit opinions down people’s throats, and you too will come to hate Americans.
And, we, after 40 years, have reached our limit of liberal bull pucky.
Works both ways, Sparky.
Dude, you ever thought that your countries behaviour is why there is such a negative view around the world of it?
What?! You mean being the most generous people ever in the history of the world and having brought more freedom, peace and prosperity to so many then any nation that ever existed? That American behavior? I’ll take it.
You must be a complete retard to believe in such crap.I love the part where the great british americans almost exterminated the whole indian nations.
No, they did it to take the Red White and Blue stars and stripes off her costume. God forbid she represent the wonderful spirit of America since we are so awful. Remember the reason she had the costume made that way was because the Americans were for Truth and Justice and all that is good. Apparently that isn’t true anymore.
They updated a fictional character in an alternate universe storyline that’s CLEARLY an alternate universe. The old costume will be back, so quit your ZOMG AMERICA IS UNDER ATTACK BY THE LEFT whining and go back to your GW Bush shrine.
Sure Truth and Justice like killing all the american indians in America in concentration camps and they didn’t let them make their own country, considering that they lived in America in the last thousand years. Then we have the south american indian genocide funded by the american government against countries like Peru, Bolivia, Chile,El Salvador and Guatemala.Yes,the americans helped fascists to kill 300 thousand Mayans, they even made medical experiments with Mayans,in the end they apologized. At least Bill Clinton did,but the policy never changes. The only good indian is the dead indian.
The new wonder woman is a giant fail. Women aren’t going to support her because she looks like the hooker version of wonder woman and despeite the new boobs even red blooded real American males are going to have reservations because of the anti American sentiment expressed by changing her all American image.
Wonder Woman is not an American.
Read the comic, she’s an Amazon (therefore of Greek origin.)
Her original alter-ego was Princess Diana of Themyscira.
Why she wears a motif similar to an American flag escapes me.
Yes Wonder Woman was an Amazon, but saying she wasn’t for America and the American “way” is ignorant. Superman was from Krypton, and he stood for Truth, Justice, and the American Way as well…these are American Icons who stood for what was good in the U.S., don’t try to re-write the story.
They were from North of the Black Sea, now the Ukraine. Their home was in what is now Turkey. Some may have sided with Troy against the Greeks.
The phrase “giant fail” is a giant fail. Welcome to the 21st Century, hip groovy mack daddy-o!
Finally – a reason to watch TV again!!!
Have they learned NOTHING from Bionic Woman, Knight Rider, etc.? This will be horrendous. It’ll be cancelled by sweeps.
You DARE compare the sexy and “bosomy” Wonder Woman to Bionic Woman and Knight Rider?!
You sir – or madam – are now banished from Hollywood. Ta-ta.
And speaking of ta-ta, I look forward to seeing who they choose. Something tells me I’ll be in love. Sorry Quinn from “Glee”; it looks like you may be replaced.
Perhaps they were referring to the recent reboots of said series, not the original series.
carter made her feminine and crosby made her tuff..pick one..i just hope it isnt ruined with too many love interests and more action adventure..anna tova of fringe would be great even jennifer garner maybe piper perabo.we want her hot but still tuff..
Hallelujah!!
Megan Fox is Wonder Woman…could give Lynda a run…but I doubt it.
Megan??? HECK NO!!! She’s as dumb as a box of Megan Fox’s.
Megan Fox is effing bimbo-but that is probably the kind you like
Adrianne Palicki should play Wonder Woman, I heard she has become available from a good source.
That would actually be really interesting, based on her performance in ‘Friday Night Lights’ I could definitely see her kicking bad guy butt. That would be a really great casting decision actually, and you could let her grow into the role similar to Tom Welling with ‘Smallville’.
Considering she’s said in the past that Wonder Woman was her dream role, hopefully she’ll get a shot at an audition.
That Lynda Carter clip pretty much embodies 90% of my adolescent fantasies.
adolescent fantasies? Dude she still embodies my fantasies now. Had a stiff one the whole time watching. Wished I was the one in her Lasso, I’d tell her the truth for damn sure!
Just watched the clip too. Now I’m wiping off my computer screen. Thanks a HELL OF ALOT for pointing it out…………
Weird. I didn’t know Wonder Woman was a lawyer.
Give me a break, Wonder Woman diserves a big budget movie. Not a freaking TV series!
Please learn how to spell before posting in public.
Most remakes miss the mark-whether it be t.v. or movies, maybe with an exception or two(can’t think of any offhand.) There are classics(that’s why they’re called classics) that just should not be remade. As talented as Jeff Bridges is, come on now, a remake of “True Grit?” Give me a break!
David Kelly jumped the shark a long time ago.
With the exception of Batman, all those golden age DC characters are way past their prime and are jus not reverent.
Did you mean “relevant”
Dude’s Asian.
Oh ,what’s this -a scholar ? You are really a very petty person-does it make you feel super good about yourself correcting people for such errors, is your ego so obnoxious ? I guess you are so insecure belittling others make you feel good. Grow the f*ck up professor.
Just looked to me like he/she was asking if that’s what you meant. But way to get superhumanly defensive about it.
yes, it’s true. they revere no one and are therefore unworthy of our time.
Right ONN!! Lets make sure she has a nice updated costume!! THONG!
MMMM- gonna be a guys only show anyways!
Perfect role for one of the Jessicas: Alba, Beal, Tandy…
David is a master of whimsy. He is so original and brilliant. Will it have musical elements? Dream sequences? I can’t wait to see his unique storytelling techniques all over again. Maybe Wonder Woman could be played by Eddie Izzard. So exciting to see David get another shot at success – about time.
Katy Perry
She’s built perfectly actually, but she has a very very annoying speaking voice that is better suited for cartoon voiceover work.
I would go with Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Biel, or Evangeline Lilly instead.
yes..yes..and yes. perfect!!
Not bad. Not bad at all.
I still think Bridget Regan would be an ideal Wonder Woman.
I hope David E. Kelley will do a good job of it and not make it silly. I’m actually surprised the Smallville folks weren’t given a swing at it (if this news is true), because such a series could be exactly what The CW needs once Smallville is done.
Yes Bridget Regan would be perfect for this role, she’s at the right age and has already proved she can do fight/action scenes with ease.
Yes, only if she drops another 20-30 lbs. I saw an episode of “the Seeker” and she has back fat.
I guess you like your women to look like little boys….
one of the few smart things on here. I agree that she would be great for the role. Does anyone know if there is any official word on who they are considering if anyone?
she is gorgeous, but she only lacks 2 qualities to play this role….BREASTS!
W.W. is quite buxom, and Bridget isn’t. Now Tabrett Behtell with dark hair…..
….actually has smaller (and faker) breasts, is waaay too short, can only do Aussie accents and has zero of the features or qualities associated with W.W.?
Someone on another board suggested her for Valkyrie though. That I could see.
i best get an audition. It has my name all over it. Now….let us pray i get a miracle body trainer. Linda hamilton arms….a must
Hmm. Wonder if David will do his usual thing and cast good actors and then either A) give them absolutely nothing to do or B) give them some good material for a couple of episodes then forget they even exist to the point they’re nothing more than extras before getting rid of them? What he did to BOSTON LEGAL and the various actors who came and went on that show (from the pilot on) was a total disgrace. I’m surprised if he’s able to get any halfway decent actor on any show of his anymore. In fact, that’s why I’d assumed he hadn’t produced anything in years.
Currently David E. Kelley is producing, and I assume writing, a new show for NBC entitled “Harry’s Law” which stars the wonderful Kathy Bates. DEK is still writing, producing and getting fine actors to work for him. Here is wishing David great things for his “Wonder Woman” production.
Thank you, Michelle Pfeiffer, for commenting!
Meanwhile, back at the hall of justice…
I don’t think WW has enough ‘angst’ to make a good film on her own. She’s a one person female A’Team and that’s all. We need a good DC film with several characters in it to keep it interesting.
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Sarah-Lancaster-as-the-New-Wonder-Woman/131859566852784
That’s all I got to say.
Just “Liked” that page. She would be awesome.
She has the look, great voice, and could handle acting more than just a bimbo character.
http://www.whedon.info/Sarah-Michelle-Gellar-MTV-Movie,13701.html
Prior kick butt experience, already has the (original type) outfit.
Hmmm. Kelley is not one I’d have predicted to attempt a superhero series, and I tend to agree that for the small screen, a WW series very much needs to be a superhero series rather than a soap opera or dramedy. That said, anyone who can manage the feat of transforming William Shatner from James T. Kirk into Denny Crane ought not be underestimated.
As far as casting for a TV lead goes, two of my immediate suggestions are already booked — Alyson Hannigan (HIMYM) or Stana Katic (Castle). And my other two would need hair jobs: Sarah Michelle Gellar and Kristen Bell. But any of those would be solid picks if I were shopping for a kick-butt Amazon princess.
Stana Katic?? ooohhh, hadn’t thought of that! she WOULD be good. definitely hot enough.
