WRITETHRU: A tense hostage situation ended safely by late afternoon when a lone gunman with “concerns over the Discovery Channel” was shot and killed by police snipers. His 3 hostages were safely rescued inside the Silver Spring, MD, building under seige. The Discovery Communications headquarters had been quickly evacuated of workers for safety reasons when the gunman first brandished weapons inside. Employees were told to go home and not return to the building. Authorities identified the gunman as James Jay Lee, a longtime protester of Discovery (photo right) who listed his last known address as a homeless shelter. He held the hostages for several hours before police snipers ended the seige by shooting him dead.
