BREAKING: Kate Beckinsale has signed on for a fourth installment of Underworld. The new pic has been written by John Hlavin with a rewrite by J. Michael Straczynski. No director yet. Screen Gems, which distributed the first three, is back for the fourth. Production starts March in Vancouver.

When will this sequel crap stop? Well, probably never. She’s hot, but she’s not relevant. Why don’t they get someone else to do it and re-energize the franchise? It’s not like the audience goes to see it for her!
Count me among those that watched the first two movies solely because of Kate Beckinsale. I enjoyed Rhona Mitra in the third one. It was a shame she was killed off. She would have been a great choice to freshen the franchise.
I would not even consider watching the fourth movie were it not for Kate.

…well, get your numbers right. the third one was less successful in the us, but it did almost the same internationally as the second one and more important it cost way less to make.

you’re right, it did bomb in the US but held up well overseas. Good point. My real point though was to the original comment that they should try to replace her already though, and that remians unchanged.
They tried with the third one (Rhona Mitra replaced her????)& it bombed. Rhona Mitra Never replaced her if u payed attention to the series that was Viktor’s daughter not her so they had to have someone else play Sonja Viktor’s daughter who he had killed. But yes it was a great movie & she did good.
I think kate was fantastic in this movie. Very agile in her moves and I am very excited about #4 coming out with her in it. Way past due. She is a great actress and I think she needs a better agent. The only one right now that does Kick Ass scenes is Angelina Jolie and I have seen enough of her. Kate needs to get in on some of those roles. She is capable of handling it. She is a fresh face.
LOL- Wrong! I go see it for her. Her hot were/vamp boyfriend isn’t too bad either:P. The film would only be right if they are in it. When i saw the third one I just knew there was going to be another one. I can’t wait. She loves this series:). I can tell by the way she acts in it. So whoever said viewers don’t go to see it for her is a complete idiot. I wish I would have seen this earlier.
Woot! I am such a big nerdy fangirl of this series! Mostly because I love Bill Nighy and Michael Sheen, but I’ll go see it no matter what. :)
What a sad career this girl is having. Seems like just yesterday she was working with Scorsese. Now this act of desperation.
“sad career?”– why? Because she’s done everything from highbrow period pictures to sci-fi actions and has fans in every genre? She’s beautiful, charismatic, and is continuing a franchise which I believe her husband started. Give her a break– some of the movies she’s been in might be bad, but she’s not. I for one thought she was the reason to see “Underworld” and look forward to her reprisal and hopeful redemption of the franchise.

Straczynski? He may have his strengths but action writing isn’t one of them. Hope they get somebody else like Kyle Ward or Chad St. John to do another draft.
Kate is the only reason I’d bother seeing a 4th Underworld, so this is a smart move by the franchise and/or her husband.
As for her career, doing a 4th Underworld can’t be a good sign, especially after Whiteout.
Of course she is back. Her career has been in the dumps since 2006. Whiteout was trap. Absolutely horrible. No wonder there was a shake-up at Silver over that 40 million dollar hot mess. Len Wiseman will end up directing Under4orld…his career has stalled out to directing episodic tv.
I think the fans actually do see it for her….shes good in this part, its her franchise.

Kyle Ward? LOL to the Nth degree. Oh dear Miles, do you even know how to read??? Ward constantly gets rewritten and/or fired.
Ward is young and has alot to learn, but I think his set piece work is exciting and inventive. With a movie like this you need to show action fans novelty instead of shit that they’ve already seen in other movies. That’s the only reason I mention him.
She’s lovely…and whose freaking career is ALWAYS up to par. I don’t hear anyone wining about Jennifer Aniston’s skinny ass running arou nd in tight clothes, tripping over leaves in four inch heals & trying to be sexy, complaining. Kate has a lot to offer as an actress. Sick of the saaaame people playing same stupid parts. Now what the morons behind the scenes do…well…
They got it half right as opposed to the all wrong that was Underworld 3 but Beckinsale without Speedman is like milk without cookies. He adds the crunch I’ll need to return to the theater.

Actually, if it wasn’t for the fact that Kate is in the films, I wouldn’t have begun to watch them, PERIOD! I’m not a big vampire fan, so I don’t watch them for that. She’s a great actress, one of the best out there, and her physical appearance is that of classic beauty, which is, unfortunately, largely missing in Hollywood. I mean really? Julia Roberts is considered gorgeous? If Julia’s gorgeous, Kate is the most beautiful woman in the world. Actually, Kate IS the most beautiful, but Julia is not very attractive. But I’m digressing. If the original poster doesn’t like Kate, why bother commenting? Sounds rather pathetic, just like what the OP probably is. A great bore at a lively party, I’m sure. BTW, Rhona Mitra sucked in Underworld 3. They should have gotten someone who was at least somewhat attractive. Glad they killed off her character. Underworld sux without Kate, no pun intended. If Kate wasn’t in the 4 installment, I wouldn’t be watching. Slap across the face to the OP, since I DO watch these movies because of Kate, as well as everything else she’s in.
Since it’s a prequel, I think of “Rise of the Lycans” as Underworld #0, to use the tendency in modern comic books to give these origin-type stories the designation of issue #0 (zero doubling for the letter O for origin). Similarly, since Rise doesn’t star Kate Beckinsale, and takes place several hundred years in the timeline’s past, one could consider it a spin-off rather than part of the main series. Either way, that would make the third Beckinsale-starring movie the third Underworld movie rather than the fourth.
That’s not to denigrate Rise of the Lycans. As a prequel, it fills in blanks and is a decent homage to Shakespearean tragedies without being precious or pompous about it. It’s far from groundbreaking, but it’s highly entertaining. And Rhona Mitra carries the movie well and clearly used the experience to inform her work on ABC’s unexpectedly good, breezy summer series, The Gates. Which ABC should renew for next summer.

I only watched these movies because of Kate Beckinsale! I cant wait to see her in the next one…with the awesome cliff hanger at the end of the 2nd one. I (personally) think Kate is an amazing actress and the only person fit for the role of “Selene”. Just as Milla Jovovich is perfect for “Alice”. Dont hate her just because you hate the movies, shes very talented and only really deserves good words…..Luv ya Kate :)

Sometimes it’s all about the story, but sometimes it just isn’t the same with out the persona of the main character. (as an example: anyone else speak Arnold-ese ~ “I’ll be back!”? Just my opinion.
