LOS ANGELES AND NEW YORK (August 11, 2010) – Today the Producers Guild of America (PGA) announced the launch of the Green Production Guide, an interactive website which provides the production community with access to a database of environmentally-sensitive products and services from vendors and service providers nationwide. The web-based Green Production Guide (www.greenproductionguide.com) offers film, television and new media producers with easy-to-access resources to help them operate more sustainable productions.
With seed funding and support provided by Disney, Fox, NBC Universal, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Warner Bros., the PGA, as part of its PGA Green Initiative, has developed this tool for the production and entertainment community to further its goal of integrating sustainable practices into its operations and reducing the environmental footprint within the production process. The Green Production Guide will also be accessible via a link on http://www.PGAgreen.org.
“I strongly believe that sustainability needs to be part of our everyday vernacular, and I’m extremely proud that the industry has successfully collaborated to launch the Green Production Guide,” said PGA President Emeritus Marshall Herskovitz. “We are grateful for the tremendous studio support behind this vital initiative, which has the ability to effect tangible change and advance sustainable solutions.”
“The Producers Guild, led by the passionate and dedicated PGA Green Committee, has worked very closely with the entertainment community to launch the Green Production Guide,” said PGA Executive Director Vance Van Petten. “We’re confident that the Green Production Guide will be an invaluable tool to everyone in the business, from producers to studios alike.”
The main functionality of the site will be access to the vast global database of vendors that offer sustainable or environmentally-sensitive services and products. The more than 1,500 initial listings available at launch were referred by production representatives who had positive experiences with products and services on past productions. Both producers and individual companies will be able to submit vendor profiles and sustainable goods and services offerings to the site for consideration and inclusion on an ongoing basis.
The site will provide various information and resources, such as a carbon calculator, that producers and others may use to independently decide on how to better monitor and measure production carbon emissions.
The Green Production Guide is part of an ongoing commitment by the entertainment sector focused on advancing sustainability. In addition to the vendor site and carbon calculator, environmentally-minded leaders from around the industry have recently formed the Green Production Alliance, created to collaboratively advance sustainability in the motion picture and television industry. The Alliance is a network of industry professionals committed to advancing environmental practices in the film, television, commercial, and new media communities. The Alliance will offer a forum for sharing environmental information and ideas, developing voluntary common-use tools and resources, and providing educational and training opportunities.
