EXCLUSIVE: Fox’s buddy cop dramedy The Good Guys will undergo some tweaking before it returns with fresh episodes in the fall. I hear the focus will be on attracting more female viewers. The show is adding a new recurring female character, a young CSI, that could potentially become a regular. There also will be more emphasis on romantic relationships, with the new character part of that effort. Additionally, RonReaco Lee, who guest starred in the pilot and appeared in 2 more episodes this summer as bumbling criminal Julius, is expected to heavily recur in the fall. (He is regular on another series, BET’s upcoming comedy Let’s Stay Together.) The Good Guys, originally slated for a summer run, was given a fall berth in May before its premiere. The series never got traction on Mondays behind Lie to Me but the Fox executive like it creatively and have stuck with their upfront decision to bring it back in the fall on Fridays, paired with Human Target. Good Guys completed its summer run last week. Two of the 11 episodes originally ordered for summer are being held and will air with the 9 additional episodes for an 11-episode fall run.

Who cares this show won’t last a season
Yeah, and you’re comment shows how little you know about comedic timing. This is a great show, and something to look forward to from week to week.
This series is hilarious, and really hit its stride with these last two episodes. A great showcase for Bradley Whitford. Stick with it, Fox!
Love this show. Keep them coming, please.
Time to put LIE TO ME back on with HOUSE!
I’m good with those changes. I’m a female viewer who enjoyed watching the show this summer. Look forward to a “tweaked” version this fall!
As long as there’s no less screen time for Jenny Wade, these all sound like positive developments to me. ;)
Love the show: it’s sharp and well-conceived yet light enough to function as escapist entertainment without leaving a bitter aftertaste. TV could use more comedies that are consistently funny without being precious or pandering, and this is a great example of all of the above IMHO.
And bumping RonReaco Lee to recurring is a good move as well. Knew him casually when a bunch of us were starting out years ago in Atlanta and he was hilarious and totally professional even way back then; kudos to him.
Glad they’re giving it a shot. It’s got a great cast and unique take on this well-worn cop formula.
I love how FOX thinks that adding a young supporting female character to shows for guys like Human Target and The Good Guys will magically create a dramatic spike in the female interest in the show. At the end of the day, these are shows about dudes for dudes, and all adding some bland girl character will do is distract from the banter and action that draw your core audience to watch your show on a weekly basis.
They are both great shows and you have a point. Still, it isn’t like there wasn’t female cast on those shows already. Good guys has the female LT who could have her role beefed up a little but is a good actress that could handle additional screen time, and it also has the good DA/love interest.
Human Target had recurring Emmanuel Vaghier (sp?) and Autumn Reeser who both moved on to other projects but were well liked. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see Amy Acker back at some point, and while she may not be a big star to everyone, she is to that shows demographic.
Always been a Bradley Whitford fan… until now. He’s trying too hard on this one.
It’s a comedy, Ed. Whitford is the clown. He’s over the top and funny as hell. I hope Hanks can smooth out his performances, because he’s the weak link so far. Great show with great potential!
It’s a comedy?
Yes, it’s the funniest thing I’ve seen on TV in ages. I am so sick of the oh so serious plague of cop/csi/lawyer/swat shows on tv that glorify the expanding fascist police state in America. The Good Guys shows fallible, faulty cops who are human and funny as hell.
I think it is too early to put The Good Guy and Human Target on their own night(Friday). While I love both shows neither of them have a built in fan base yet and to give them one night together is a bad idea. I predict that after these shows end in the Fall none of them will be renewed.
Speak for yourself – I love – love – love Human Target and they dont need to add any cast members – dont fix what dont need fixin! As for Good Guys – meh.
I only watched the pilot but could tell that they were setting Ronreaco up to return, basically the Huggy Bear to their Starsky and Hutch.
Love the guy. Wish he was a bigger name.
I’m not understanding why this show’s not a lot more popular that it is.
I’m really enjoying it. Personally, I’d never have thought to cast Bradley Whitford in that role — and he’s wonderful in it.
The editing is also a lot of fun. The scripts are great too.
There’s a lot to love here.
how would adding a young female cop bump up the female audience?
it will annoy us
it will be some bland twig of a gal that looks like everyone else
and will not have any sex appeal
it will not attract a stronger female audience
love both of the guys
Bradley could tone it down a bit
but the show is fine
awww no!!!!! i loved this show how i t is and i would hate to c any changes to it!!!!!
Why polish a turd? Especially an AFTRA turd, made in a right to work State, like Texas? I will only enjoy watching it fail.
I’m glad the Fox executives are giving this one a chance, I really like it. I hope the new female character won’t take away from the show. I’m a female but that doesn’t mean I can only watch shows that feature female characters.
I agree. I don’t think this is just a “dudes” show. I like it a lot and hope it’s not ruined by the changes.
This is a really good, funny show and I’m glad to hear Fox is supporting it.
I am required as a condition of employment to say that GOOD GUYS is a milestone in the art of human entertainment and will sweep the Emmys in both comedy and drama categories.
This show rocks! Both my husband and I laugh throughout the entire hour. Fox would make a mistake if they pulled it. Finally a funny show on TV! You rock Fox!
Diana Maria Riva is the BEST. Hot, funny, beautiful and can do anything.
Here we go again. Seems like every time there’s a show with some solid guy appaeal the suits have to meddle and “tweak” and feminize it. Wasn’t it enough they had one of the male leads made out to appear a bumbling idiot who has to be set straight each week by his clearly superior in every way female boss. Tweak on….it’ll be over soon enough. It always is. Ed Bernero was right.
Amen gettinreal! I am a female, but honestly LOVE this show even though it is more male oriented. Not every show need to pander to “girly girls”!
Why not just bring back David Rasche as Sledgehammer as it was so much funnier than this as well as half an hour shorter. And that’s with the gunshots at the beginning of every scene. Macho humor should be done by macho dudes. The Expendables looks funnier.
You underestimate the Bradley Whitford Fangirl Contingent. We exist but not all of us are Nielsen ratings households. We are legion.
Just wondering…can anyone think of any recent shows that were tweaked in the second season that went on to better success?
Not a perfect example, but Shana Alexander’s FBI agent Kate Todd character was killed at the end of NCIS’ second season, replaced by “Mossad agent Ziva David” and the show’s gotten more popular as the season’s have gone by.
And, for that matter, NCIS’ predecessor, JAG, switched networks (NBC to CBS) and replaced its female lead in the second season and then really took off.
Not a recent show, but A DIFFERENT WORLD had a horrible first season, changed showrunners/writers, and went on to several years of ratings success.
RonReaco Lee was the best thing about the two episodes I watched. Good for him.
