For years now CW’s America’s Next Top Model has been a bad joke. Executive producer/host Tyra Banks repeatedly publicized the contest as high fashion, but in reality tie-ins with CoverGirl cosmetics and Seventeen magazine skewed the winners to the teen scene. Which is why last season’s new judge, fashion editor André Leon Talley, seemed hopelessly out of place without heroin chic. (And at times seemed bewildered why no one else was doing the show in French.) Well, he’ll feel more at home in Season 15. Because ANTM’s producers, 10 by 10 Entertainment and Bankable Productions, have given the show a high fashion overhaul for Season 15. First, the new prize package includes a spread in Vogue Italia, a major step up from Seventeen. But guest judges joining Talley include Sex And The City stylist Patricia Field, photographers Patrick Demarchelier and Francesco Carrozzini, designers Zac Posen and Roberto Cavelli, as well as Vogue Italia editor-in-chief Franca Sozzani. Stupidly, the CoverGirl contract is still intact. (The company must be blackmailing Tyra with a file of her fat photos…)

Having been in the ‘high’ fashion biz, it’s always been a circus to an extent. But there is indeed a difference betw. the screechy Miss J kind – really obvious and low-end, vs. the types like Andre who have presence without even speaking (yes, beyond his size). Tyra needs to break away from the screechy/freaky fashion types she’s been according time to and give way to the real deal fashionistas who actually influence that bizness.
Is that Andre guy pseudo-retarded or just completely myopic in the most disgusting of gay-vain veins. (I’m gay, so I know gay!) He makes a show that doesn’t take itself seriously, that is also designed in a very tongue-in-cheek way for the general viewing audience, seem childishly immature. By the way, why would any intelligent person take fashion critiques seriously when they come from a guy who looks like he wears high-end tents?
wait
WHAT??
This waste of studio facilities and bandwidth has been on the air for 15 years already???
Campy? Yes. Over the top? Yes. Needlessly melodramatic? Yes.
Bad joke? Hardly. If Deadline is still around (and thriving, that’s key) in “15 seasons”, then come back around this way and throw some stones at Tyra.
Blackmailing with fat pics? Clearly you’re referring to the pics from a couple of years ago that, not only leaked, but Tyra showcased on her talk show.
Heidi Klum’s ‘Germany’s Next Topmodel’ is really worth looking at.
Tyra is the only mogul next to oprah ; for black female;
and you call Tyra a bad joke!!!!!!????????
Hi! I love your blog! Just wanted to point out that it’s spelled “Cavalli” not “Cavelli”.
Idol gave us Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. Not ONE top model. Or even one that looks like one.
Tyra is the creator of the top model franchise;each country has a top model competition. Most of the other women listed on the forbes top 100 celeb are performers outside of Tyra and oprah.
Next top model competition has 17 different countries each with their own different competition; 170 markets.
Tyra is the creator and franchised the shows.
Yah that’s some joke.
That’s a real fckin joke.
The problem is that CW like all the inane networks targeting women thought its audience was younger than it is. Like all it’s now learning the audience is older. Like most executives, network executives think that the sweet spot is 18-25 when in reality, the money to be made and the demo watching is much older.
Tyra is the only other woman on the forbes 100
top celeb. except oprah that is NOT a performer.
In just 5yrs.
That’s some bad joke your saying???
Yah that’s some fukin bad joke!!!!!
The show jumped the shark after they got rid of that train wreck Janice Dickinson.
The reason they still have a Covergirl tie is obvious. Vogue Italia has tons of credibility and beautiful layouts, but the money comes from people like Covergirl. High fashion does not equal money, it is usually lucky to break even. What keeps them afloat is perfume and handbag sales, something most women an afford, and can make them feel part of the glamour of the brand.
The show has always been somewhat entertaining but was never been so valid pre-Talley. I look forward to next season further reviving my interest!
As for Cover Girl, that’s a damn fine campaign for any real world fashion model to rise from anonymity and secure- no joke. Just like any other highly competitive industry (ie. film) much else is low paid or sparse save for the promise of ‘investing’ in her career.
“Idol gave us Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. Not ONE top model. Or even one that looks like one.”
Ah–hello! J-Hud anyone. Oscar winner. Hello!!!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
