UPDATED WRITE-THRU – EXCLUSIVE: In what amounts to a dream come true for fans of Middle Earth, Peter Jackson has decided to direct two installments of The Hobbit, trusted sources are telling me. His deal is being negotiated right now with Warner Bros , New Line, and MGM. He will shortly take the reins over from Guillermo del Toro, after Jackson extricates himself from other project obligations that caused Jackson and manager Ken Kamins to initially deny he would direct. While Jackson’s camp has been tight-lipped, I’m told that the case is being made to MGM’s owners to loosen the purse strings and make the movies happen. The impetus for these talks is that Jackson will be the director of both of The Hobbit films, which will be shot back-to-back in his New Zealand backyard. The secret’s out.
Despite Jackson camp denials that directing was a consideration, there were signs for cautious optimism from the moment del Toro bowed out. More recently, there have been major clues. While several directors have angled for the job — the most recent rumors focused on David Yates and Jackson’s District 9 protege Neill Blomkamp — no offer was ever made. I think that’s because Jackson was figuring out if he wanted to direct two more films, and finish the saga he started with The Lord of the Rings. And then once he decided, Kamins had to make it possible. It became more evident this week: he, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens scheduled a trip to London the week of July 4, followed by a trip to Los Angeles the following week. They will meet the most impressive actors who’ve been put on tape by casting directors. Jackson, Walsh and Boyens wrote the scripts with del Toro, and they did the original trilogy together. But if they intended for someone else to direct, they would have made sure the filmmaker was part of the casting process.
This is quite a turn of events since del Toro surprised the industry by announcing on the Hobbit sounding board TheOneRing.net on Sunday, May 30 that he would not be directing. It was shocking, because del Toro interrupted his new deal to become a cornerstone director at Universal so that he could spend five years taking on The Hobbit, after being chosen over Sam Raimi by Jackson, MGM and New Line. After completing the writing of two scripts, del Toro sounded reticent days before, expressing concern about MGM’s financial situation. He left days later. Since the expectation is that somehow the film would get financed despite MGM’s woes, speculation was that perhaps del Toro didn’t see himself and his family living in New Zealand for the next several years required to make the films. This seemed more plausible, since Jackson said he expected to get the films into theaters for December 2012 and December, 2013.
Jackson seemed the obvious person to take his place as the director of the JRR Tolkien novel, particularly to keep those release dates on track. While he has been engaged with Steven Spielberg on the Tin Tin films, Jackson has been a creative partner with del Toro from the beginning. He certainly knows the terrain better than anyone alive, having shot three installments of The Lord of the Rings during a single production stint. Those three films grossed $2.9 billion worldwide and won a slew of Oscars. Though Kamins initially dismissed the possibility, Jackson opened the door a crack when he told a New Zealand daily he would consider it: “If that’s what I have to do to protect Warner Brothers’ investment, then obviously that’s one angle which I’ll explore,” Jackson said.
Numerous directors wanted the job, but hiring a star on Jackson’s level would have been difficult. Raimi, who is working on the Warner Bros/Legendary vidgame adaptation Warcraft and the Disney film The Great and Powerful Oz, was busy and would likely not return to a project for which he’d gotten passed over. Most of the other star directors like Alfonso Cuaron, Chris Nolan, Spielberg or Bryan Singer are busy on their own projects. In addition, it would be difficult to pay them properly, because of the amount of first dollar gross already committed to Jackson, the Tolkien estate, rights holder Saul Zaentz and Harvey Weinstein, who held the 5% gross stake he had in the original trilogy. That’s when Michael Eisner refused his request for Miramax to make the films with Jackson, and Weinstein gave the filmmaker a short window to find another home for the project. That window was almost closed when New Line founder Bob Shaye said yes to three films.
Jackson will have his deal sweetened, but he’s already completely invested in the process and there are built-in efficiencies. The films will use the soundstages and visual effects facilities that Jackson built with proceeds from the LOTR proceeds.
Pending a deal, the next step will be to discuss whether or not to shoot the films in 3D. That would beg a second discussion about transferring LOTR into 3D as well, a move that would give the trilogy a shot at another revenue cycle. These are all weighty discussions, but at least there are signs of forward motion, something that cannot be said for the other pictures that the debt-choked MGM has frozen while it figures out its future.

His diabolical plan is complete.
I`m wondering how much he`ll charge the studio in order to agree to take the career-saving helm of The Hobbit, since even third banana Twilight actors with 2 lines per movie managed to negotiate a $4 million each for Breaking Dawn. I wouldn`t pay him much after squandering $200 mio on King Kong and offically $65 mio but unofficially $100 mio on Lovely Bones. The guy costs too much now but doesn`t deliver which is in disproportion to LOTR phase when he didn`t cost much but movies made a fortune. But that wa sbefore fame`s gone to his head. yeah.
He’s worth it.
I can’t wait to watch 10 hours of tiny men staring lovingly at one another. It’s going to be effing GREAT!
King Kong wasn’t exactly a money-loser.
Fame gone to Jacksons head! you are off yours. The guy cares nothing for the limelight, and whatever he gets paid,he`s worth it and they will still make tons.Theres not a person who ever lived, who could have made the lotrs movies any better, and its the best news in years to me,that he will be making two more.
King Kong grossed $650 million with DVD sales, not to bad for initial investment of $200 million, I’ll take a 300% gross return on investment every time!
i was actually thrilled to hear the initial news that del toro would take the helm and direct these movies while jackson would produce them.
why? because jackson took a lot of liberties with the lord of the rings films. for instance his design of the wargs…del toro actually looked into the origins of this mythological animal and realized it was supposed to be “wolfish” not some kind of hyena!
i understand jackson is a huge tolkien buff, but i think del toro would have stayed true to the books…visually and scriptually.
so what if he took liberties?
following the book to a t is boring, just look at the first 2 harry potter movies.
the LOTR trilogy is awesome, especially the extended versions.
i am very glad that jackson is making the hobbit.
if MGM really does have the money now and able to make a deal with Jackson, I wonder what the real reason is for Del Toro to have left. Were they stalling with funding in order for this scenario to play out and get Del Toro to choose to leave on his own? All seems a bit questionable. With Jackson riding co-pilot as writer/producer and final decision maker I don’t know how having Del Toro direct would be a danger to investors. Jackson is clearly calling all the shots anyway. hmmmmmmmmmm
They dont even have offer much upfront, he made his gazillions on a cut of the action, he’ll want that again.
Great news, everybody!
Now I think all of us have reason to celebrate and also to believe The Hobbit will become reallity !
I didn´t like much the idea of Del Toro as director. I remember very well he said some years ago he didn´t like fantasy or epics. Tolkiens books only have to be transported to the silver screen by people who diserve them ! Really, great news! FRG
Well, it will be interesting to see if anything comes of this or if it’s just another bump in the long and winding road.
When Del Toro left I thought the project was doomed. Now it looks like Jackson is directing and the project is actually gonna get done.
Great news.
Awesome comment!!!
OMG! I just got a boner. God Bless you Jackson!
The balance between nerds and Twilight fans has once again been reestablished.
Urgent? Does that mean I need to do something about this? What should I do? How about “Breaking?”
Immediately stock up on duct tape and plastic. And tuna fish. And mangoes or something.
(What, too 2003?)
Isn’t The Hobbit a prequel to the LOTR movies ..shouldn’t they look exactly the same? And why would that be a bad thing? Uhm wasnt there some Oscar gold and box office magic made there?
On a related note.. I have Hollywood amnesia – wasn’t there bad blood between the producers of The Hobbit and Jackson or did I dream that?
Dream man, he was the producer before Del toro left.
I feel like this news requires some sort of action on my part.
sweet! welcome back, peter!
I too am thrilled by this developement. Not to slight anyone else but I had a hard time envisioning anyone other than Jackson doing the “Hobbit” justice.
But, MGM is still broke and these movies are still in limbo. Del Toro didn’t drop off because he didn’t want to do it, he dropped off because it appeared it would never happen.
Not sure how Jackson can get these made any faster.
are you kidding?
Jackson can get them made off of the power of “Lords” and his track record. This is a no-brainer for the money guys
Well as the article implies — at least this is how I interpret things — Jackson’s hoping that putting himself in the director’s chair will amount to such a sure thing that MGM would pretty much have to cough up the budget. Which is still a long shot since the money doesn’t appear to exist, but seems somewhat logical nonetheless.
I don’t think MGM will finance….they will take a cut of % for releasing the rights to WB and allowing the films to move forward.
WB will shoulder the cost with heavy advance pre-sales based on LOTR success.
I just fell off my chair. You better have called this right Mr Fleming- or a million Tolkienistas will be round to break your windows! Fingers and toes all crossed ….
I heed your “urgent” call. I will pack my writing tools and set out to conquer Middle Earth.
Oh, wait…this has nothing to do with me. Hmmm…
Well, maybe they’re finally resuscitate MGM, and the two scripts I have in ICU over there will suddenly COME ALIVE.
I
Yay yay yay!
So what’s going on with his “Tintin” ?
With all due respect, dilbert… who cares?
Seriously. Spielberg’s Tintin is going to bomb. Way over budgeted.
If Peter Jackson does these movies, I hope he can change his “look” alittle or they’ll be copies of the LOTR films and audiences will shy away. But good news. At least the director won’t be in foreign territory.
“Hope he can change his “look” alittle or they’ll be copies of the LOTR films and audiences will shy away…”?? Really? What is the logic there, considering each consequent installment after FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING made more money? I’m pretty certain people are satisfied with “his look”.
Short of giving the role of Bilbo to Ashton Kutcher, audiences will have to be pried away from the Hobbit movies with a crowbar if Jackson directs. I very much doubt there will be any kind of shying away if the LOTR look and quality level is simply maintained. If nothing else, box office would go up with a massive 3D rollout to tack on the extra fee. I’m sure it’ll step up though, if only because technology has improved. The creative team has the same vision but better tools if they can get the cash to make it happen.
WTF are you thinking? It must be a joke, cause that makes no sense.
If Jackson “changed the ‘look'” it would be the dumbest move of any film maker in the history of cinema. Middle Earth is Middle Earth, which has already been established in the first 3 films, so why would he change it now? If the look is different it’s likely people would hate the 2 films and Jackson forever.
Have you ever heard the phrase ‘if it’s not broke, don’t fix it’?
Well, it was broke from the outset, yet it made lots of money.
So no need to fix it, I’d say.
Everyone who enjoyed ‘Middle Earth’ will come flocking back, no doubt. Whether or not it has got anything to do with Middle-earth.
I’m shocked, shocked I say.
And I wonder if he’ll have to sue WB for his profits like he did New Line…
This feels wrong. There was no way before, and now he’s negotiating? How did this 180 come about so long after the trilogy?
There’s shady dealings! Conspiracy! Tin hats.
Blergh.
The Hollywood Reporter is running Nikki’s story without credit
pls pls pls make this happen.
I don’t give a damn how shady it is ,it was -etc….what ever. This is the man to do right by The Hobbit, with an amazing team. Make it so.
As of 12:05 LA time, this story has not been posted on Aint It Cool News. Looks like Deadline is going to put Harry Knowles and co. out of business. Aint It Cool aint so cool anymore.
Who couldn`t see this coming after the complete debacle of Lovely Bones and already forogtten barely-hit King Kong? Jackson needs The Hobbit to restore his hit-maker cred more than the Hobbit needs him. The Hobbit would sell big no matter who directs but Jackson obviously cannot open just anything. So there you go.
yesss, the Ring did it, once again XD
I’m glad del Toro quit – I mean c’mon, would the guy who directed Hellboy (or had any connection with that horrible film) have been adequate for this project? I don’t think so.
I’m even happier that it will be Jackson, he deserved to get this.
Before doing Lord of the Rings, Jackson himself had a filmography that didn’t really seem befitting to helm such a project, so your point seems moot. And Del Toro got the job based mostly off his work on Pan’s Labyrinth, which really is probably the best fantasy to come out since any of the LOTR movies. Del Toro would have probably done a very fine job – I prefer Jackson being on board again, but del Toro was about as solid of an alternative as there was.
Quick, better get over to HSX and buy a bunch of Hobbit shares!
Bored of the Rings just got more boring.
Thank god there’s once again a movie to look forward to.
YES YES YES…I cant WAIT to see yet another 6 hours and 400 million dollars worth of movie with non-ethnics, and swords, and elizabethan clothing and old english, and pubs and kings, and queens, and fair ladies and yada yada yada etc etc etc…I also cant wait to see the new Steven Spielberg/ JJ Abrams alien movie with young beautiful CW, Orange County-looking, trust fund babies in the lead… I also can not wait for the new Sam Jackson movie where he plays Queen Neffertiti, and then the next week, he’ll relase another movie where he plays Hitler and only when he DIES will another black man be given a chance TO BE HIRED!!
Amazing, the technology improves but the thinking remains unmoved. WHATEVER!
Huh? Lighten up, Francis.
Uh, dude, Tolkien’s books take place in what is essentially a pre-historical Europe. How could Peter Jackson include minority actors in such a context? I think you need to get over yourself.
Ohhhhh okay…all this time I thought it was MIDDLE EARTH, not the ACTUAL EARTH…what an idiot i am not thinking it was all pre-historical Europe. Im sure Peter Jackson employed PLENTY of minority actors to play the Orks!!
Actually i cant get over myself becuz i love myself too much baby.
You’re absolutely right. You *are* an idiot.
With all due respect and no offense intended to the defenseless, long-suffering peoples of (insert your own oppressed cultural/ethnic affinity group HERE)…
have you ever heard Patton Oswalt’s (great) bit about wanting to euthanize a couple of idiots sitting in front of him at a Western Cinema retrospective @ the New Beverly? The nitwits were injecting their completely irrelevant postmodern p.c. bias into a running derogatory commentary on a John Wayne film: “Oh, great; let the WOMEN stay in the kitchen…why all the GUNS? I guess we can’t settle our arguments like ADULTS”, etc.
My point being, simply –
DUDE: it’s TOLKIEN! Get over it.
Star directors like . . . Bryan Singer.
Bwahahahahaha. Yeah that’s what the world needs. Two Hobbit films from THAT guy.
Jackson is obviously the right and safe bet for the job. I’d be interested in seeing an Alfonso Cuaron directed Hobbit though.
