EXCLUSIVE: Laura Linney’s Cathy is getting Miranda as a friend. Cynthia Nixon, who played Miranda on the hit HBO comedy series Sex and the City and in the 2 features the show spawned, is joining the cast of Linney’s upcoming Showtime dark comedy series The Big C as a recurring. The Sony/Original Film-produced show stars Linney as Cathy, a repressed suburban wife and mother who reclaims her life after a terminal cancer diagnosis. Nixon will play her friend. Other recurring guest stars on Big C’s upcoming first season are Gabourey Sidibe and Idris Elba.

Great casting! I think she and Linney will have great chemistry in their scenes. Both great actresses!
It’s so nice to see someone post a positive comment about anything TV that I’ve read this weekend. I totally agree with you…both are phenomenal actresses. TM
Showtime obviously wants ZERO men to watch the show.
What about gay men?
Who isn’t in this cast? Every week it’s someone new.
Showtime makes all the right moves! Their personalities will be in sync. I like the premise of the show. The best way to meet cancer head on is with humor; it’s a life saver. Cancer will shake up one’s life, and it seems Laura’s character will embrace that. Thanks, Showtime!
Somehow, I missed the word “terminal”. Nowadays people can live with terminal cancer for a few years, like Elizabeth Edwards. Still, I wish that word was NOT in play. The stakes suddenly got higher.
I’m calling it now: Linney, already Hollywood/Broadway’s only genuine heir to Meryl Streep’s stature in terms of serious acting, is about to demonstrate commensurate top-drawer comedic chops as well.
You’ll see.
