EXCLUSIVE: While Luc Besson and his Europa Corp make their movies independent of the studios, several of the majors are jumping at the prospect of making a multi-picture deal with the French company that most recently scored with Taken. I’m told that Sony Worldwide Acquisitions Group is the front-runner for the deal, while Universal and Fox are also talking with Besson about coming aboard for two pictures.
One, Section Eight–which is being re-titled to The Lock Out–is a prison movie set in space. The second, Colombiana, is a drama in the vein of Besson’s The Professional, about a 20ish girl who seeks to get revenge. The movie is set in Latin America and the U.S. Besson would produce both movies, but he is a very hands on presence and the guy is money. Fox has the enduring relationship with Besson and distributed Taken, which is in the process of being sequelized by Besson and his writing partner on the film, Robert Mark Kamen.
