I think NBC has to, considering it’s the only thing they’ve got going that might be of any interest to viewers.
didn’t Leno say that if the show wasn’t a success he’d leave the talk show biz?? this isn’t fair to conan and leno knows it….leno’s another douchebag who only cares about money….sad
The Jay Leno Show was successful. The affiliates don’t want it leading into the 10 o’clock and NBC is worried about upsetting them.
“The Comedy and Magic Club?
Jay deflects your attention away from this critical reality: he’s this bloody coup’s only real winner. However much he plays hapless victim for the cameras, he’s clawing back what was taken from him.
Just like when he left Letterman bleeding in a dark alley, stumbling off to CBS.
Meanwhile, it seems to me–though I’d like your take on it, Nikki–that the larger war is, to a significant extent, a turf battle between the east and west coast factions of NBC (yes, not unlike hip-hop).
The west coast prevailed over the east when Leno prevailed over Letterman; then came Conan, eastsider Lorne Michaels’ progeny. Finally, the tide had turned. I don’t think Michaels held any direct control over the Tonight Show–did he? But while the ailing SNL remains a significant if dwindling profit-center/power-base, Michaels gained more influence via Conan surely, and control over the disastrous Fallon, who gets stung by this coup now as well.
So it seems the westside has struck back–swiftly and hard–and the question I have is how much the affiliates are just being used strategically by Leno and the westsiders, as when Leno rallied affiliates to his side in the Letterman struggle.
And he continues with this myth about his having been “fired” by NBC from the “Tonight Show.” Poor Jay, a victim, and he NEVER announced years ahead of time that he’d be leaving the show in 2009, he DID NOT later sign a contract specifying that departure. Richest of all, he now cites NBC’s claims that the 10pm show performed “exactly as they’d expected” to illustrate how weird and silly it is that he’s being “canceled.” Zucker et al are idiots and fools, until he needs their word to back up that he was doing great.
See, that’s Jay. Nice to fans on the street. A real pal to those fans who crowd around for a touch before the monologue. But he treats the whole truth like crap.
Jay – he’s been canceled for all of our sins, so we owe him, and so does Conan.
how come everybody feels like conan’s the one getting screwed??? they took the tonight show away from jay! he got screwed first -by conan.
10pm was a mistake for jay, but you can’t defend conan’s performance on the tonight show either. conan got the keys to the dad car, then crashed it.
Your right, Conan started it all by going to the network and saying i want TTS or i walk to Fox.
He gets it and BOMBS and i mean BOMBSSSSS his ratings are lower than Nightline, Jay had around 2.5 mil viewers more than Dave and now Conan has around 2,5 less than Dave that’s a loss of 5 million viewers and hes not pulling in the younger crowds like thhe hoped, NBC has to realize he only lasted because he was after Jay, if he goes to FOX he will FAILLLLLL Big time !
he’s comedy writer and NOT a comedian and NEVER Will be. Hes just zanny, well so am i big deal. Zanny only makes your friends laugh not the world.
JAY ONLY SAID HE WAS RETIRING BECAUSE NBC FORCED HIM TO LEAVE.
If I had more skill with video and audio editing, I’d be tempted to put together a YouTube montage of Jay Leno clips with Jennifer Holiday singing “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” from DREAMGIRLS.
OUCH! Furious D, You are funnier than Leno on NBC in Prime Time. Maybe they will sign you up for the time slot…LOL…
This is NBC trying to repair Leno’s image by positioning him as a victim in this whole mess, just like Conan. NBC is happy to take the heat for all of this, but the last thing they need is for Leno to be seen as the bad guy who pushed Conan out. They went through that in 1992. NBC wants Leno to attack them so that viewers don’t realize how complicit Leno has been in The Screwing of Conan.
Hey, this is the only way people are watching NBC – just to see how they resolve this mess.
Laugh you jerk. And think about the Conan staffers who moved their families to L.A. 7 months ago. Someone should research how well Leno was doing in the ratings 7 months into his Tonight Show tenure. The answer: he was sucking in the ratings.
To say nothing of how Leno’s lousy lead-in to local news also dumped lousy lead-ins on Conan.
Leno left Letterman bleeding in a dark alley stumbling to CBS — where he wound up making twice the dough that NBC was offering. I wish someone would leave me stumbling like that.
I watched his show last night.
Prior to that I watched the Factor coverage on this and real interesting. For one thing Bernie Goldberg predicts within a year’s time Jeff Zucker is going be fired. But did Zucker push Leno out of his tonight show spot? Becouse of his jokes of over Obama? Anyway I watch Conan too last night and I notice more, more in his comedy monologues he may jump to Fox Broadcasting. Now if Jay gets the old spot and Conan is gone to another network,Letterman’s nightmares will return. Now Jimmy Fallon has been joking about this too. But Zucker should be getting the butts of thier jokes becouse he created all this. Now the Leno Show might’ve worked if the timeslot was earlier. I wonder how the Comcast execs are looking at this Zucker debackle for they haven’t said nothing publicly.
Umm.. I think this chart says it pretty well ..
Anybody who thinks that if Leno was hit by a bus tomorrow that NBC would leave Conan in place and hope he recovers is delusional.
NBC took a big gamble and it didn’t pay off. They have to correct now to bring the money in.
Yes, people have families and moved. That happens all the time in show business.. and sometimes, they get cancelled too.
Why does Conan get a pass?
Why does Leno continue to use words like “fired” and “cancelled” to describe his leaving the Tonight Show for 10 p.m? It was a deal made 5 years in advance. He continues to play the victim and it’s puzzling/inaccurate. This entire mess is unfair to Conan, who is incredibly talented and funny. Just give the Tonight Show back to Leno so he can perform for the idiotic masses and let Conan go somewhere else where he can be appreciated by people who actually recognize good comedy.
Jay Leno will be 60 years old in a few months. Carson announced his retirement at 64. So NBC isn’t exactly protecting the future of its late night franchise if they stick with Jay, drive Conan away (he should walk), and kill Fallon. How many more years can Jay do this, and what’s the succession plan now?
It is true that if Jay had been judged using today’s standards during his first five months, back in 1992, he’d have been yanked too. The show was awkward and tense during the Helen K era and Dave beat him like a rented mule. The whole first year of Leno’s tenure, NBC execs were cursing themselves for picking Jay over Dave.
So now Conan, who’s done nothing wrong here but is taking the same kind of time to find his 11:35p legs, should be extended the same courtesy. Jay ends up as the bad guy, he won’t be the same at 11:35p with this drama baked into his branding, and his sell-by date is coming up fast.
to be completely honest, although Conan is usually “funnier” than Leno, there is something about Leno’s Tonight Show that is better than Conan’s. Its like Jay Leno is a better performer, a better entertainer, like a vegas show. Where as Conan is a better comedian no doubt. If I wanted to watch an hour of standup though, I’d witch over to HBO’s Chris Rock, Comedy Central, or Lopez. Thats why NBC doesnt want to lose Jay. They know that if a competing network gives him a “real” hour long tonight show, that he will certaintly become a competitor to Conans Tonight Show. I like them both, but to bash one over the other as if there being melicous is ridiculous. This is show biz. Its a cut throat industry. Jay has put in his time long befoe Conan, Conan has been given an opportunity (somewhat at the exepense of Jay) Jay was appraoached with this “solution” which he accpeted. Its not like Jay said, “hey, the only way Ill step aside for Conan is if you give me a show in primetime. ” He probabaly said “hey NBC, I rather stay with you guys an renew my contracty for the Tonight Show, but if you have decided to give it Conan, than thats that. I will likely accept an offer from another network.”
Whats wrong with that? The man doesnt have the right to pursue the best career he can? Neither Conan nor Jay are the bad guys. The bad guys are NBC for being indecisive. They should have just let Jay go if they werent going to renew his Tonight Show contract. End of story.
First, those who originally said the new time slot for Leno wouldn’t work, you’ve got the right to say TOLDJA.
The show was profitable, but the local affiliates pushed back. In hindsight, makes sense not a good lead in for the news. Any thoughts why?
Perhaps spending an hour with a lighthearted/funny Leno doesn’t prime you for the News, which is usually itself just repeats with mostly bad news (economy, war, crime, fires, car crashes, etc.). Or, was there too much drama competition at that time slot for a talk show?
As usual, Conan’s take on the whole thing last night was much funnier and he poked the knife into NBC pretty deep. Hope he takes his show to another network and, more important, back to NYC.
Leno was having problems in the ratings in 1993 even though NBC was a thriving network at the time.
Given how badly Leno’s new show is hurting the ratings of the local 11 p.m. news shows, it’s a miracle that Conan has ratings that are positive numbers.
NOW he’s funny again…it only takes all this…and 20 years of hackdom. And screw Jerry Seinfeld too
The mucus man on the ad I had to watch before seeing this was funnier than Jay. Better looking, too.
i think NBC is good for garbage ! Jay is passer ! Conan was getting ratings…Leno said he was leaving…but since he can’t get a job anywhwere else he went back…that & the Global Award (AKA HBO award) if they close shop who will really care about them !
