EXCLUSIVE: I know that every studio tried to get this film but Jim Cameron went with RML/Uni. Now Relativity Media teamed up with Universal Pictures to acquire the domestic rights to Sanctum, that 3-D underwater survival actioner. They’ll own the pic together, and Relativity’s Rogue label will distribute the film through its arrangement with Universal Pictures. Jim Cameron will exec-produce because Sanctum will use the same Cameron/Pace Fusion Camera system for 3-D technology that Cameron used to shoot Avatar. Screenwriter Andrew Wight (Ghosts Of The Abyss) will also produce the film he and John Garvin wrote. Wayfare Entertainment recently committed to finance the $30 million, so Relativity CEO Ryan Kavanaugh and Wayfare principals Ben Browning, Michael Maher and Peter Rawlinson will also get exec-producer credits. FilmNation’s Aaron Ryder will serve as a co-producer. Cameron personally selected Australian director Alister Grierson (Kokada) to direct Sanctum whose production begins in Australia’s Queensland/Gold Coast before the end of 2009.
