News Corp today posted a flat 3rd-quarter compared to a year ago (when there was a gain relating to the swap of DirecTV to Liberty Media). But considering the recession that sounds pretty good. Its stock rose 6.29% on the after-hours news. Like other companies with network and cable TV and O&O stations and publishing, News Corp complained about lower ad sales. But income improved at its movie and TV studios. News Corp earned $2.72 billion, or $1.04 a share, compared with a profit of $2.69 billion, or $.91 a share. Revenue fell 16% to $7.4 billion, less than the $7.7 billion that the street expected.
