Not that anyone is throwing a pity party for the vast majority of 2009 Forbes-listed richest world billionaires who lost money this year to the tune of an astonishing $238 billion among them. But it turns out that the investor behind DreamWorks is not just among the 10 biggest losers but The Biggest Loser by dollars. Sure, he was last year’s biggest gainer. But India’s Anil Ambani saw $32 billion, or 76% of his fortune, evaporate as shares of his Reliance Communications, Reliance Power and Reliance Capital all collapsed. Not to mention that India’s stock market tumbled 44% in 2008 and the Indian rupee depreciated 18% against the dollar. So Ambani’s 2009 net worth is estimated by Forbes this week at now only $10.1 billion.
