I meant to post this last night, but I’ve been ill for the past 24 hours. The Dreamgirls trailer premiered Wednesday night during MTV’s reality show Laguna Beach. And it was one of the best I’ve ever seen. It manages with a lot of sharp editing, and almost no dialogue, to flesh out this movie’s drama, especially in the last half, without giving away the entire storyline. Nor does it over-expose either Beyoncé or Jamie Foxx. In a savvy move, it also elevates the pic into an archival slice of important African-American musical history. Because of all this, the trailer manages to actually widen the potential audience: even moviegoers who wouldn’t be caught dead at a musical might want to see the pic since this trailer promises so much more. The Paramount/Dreamworks Oscar contender opens December 15th.
